PARIS – Hungary\u2019s growing list of European Union worries includes controversial LGBT legislation and potentially hacking the phones of journalists, rights activists and political opponents.<\/p>\n

Poland has rebuffed a ruling by the bloc\u2019s highest court, claiming its own constitution has precedence over the EU laws it vowed to follow when it joined the club in 2004, although it now appears to have backed down.<\/p>\n

Farther north and politically opposite, Denmark\u2019s leftist government is also feeling legal heat over its recent decision to return hundreds of Syrian immigrants to Damascus, a move critics say violates basic human rights and could set a dangerous precedent for other deportations.<\/p>\n

Along with a year of battling COVID-19 and its economic fallout, the EU is also grappling with a more existential threat, as its founding principles of democracy, rule of law and human rights face multiple challenges from within, in ways, some observers say, the 27-member bloc is unprepared to meet.<\/p>\n

Referring to Hungary and Poland, among others, French President Emmanuel Macron recently warned of a creeping \u201canti-liberal conservatism\u201d undermining EU values \u201cand what has built the core of our Western liberal democracy for centuries.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe EU has been all about democracy from the start,\u201d said Sebastien Maillard, director of the Paris-based Jacques Delors Institute think tank.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe fact member states are challenging this is a major threat, because the EU is a legal construction. It has no army. Its only power is a legal power,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

As questions mount about the bloc\u2019s ability to save itself \u2014 \u201cThe EU Watches as Hungary Kills Democracy,\u201d The Atlantic<\/em> magazine wrote last year, echoing other analyses \u2014 it is now sharpening its defenses.<\/p>\n

European leaders are speaking out against dissident members, some observers say, in ways they rarely did before. The European Commission, the bloc\u2019s executive arm, is mulling new financial penalties against key offenders.<\/p>\n

Not enough<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yet for many, these steps are insufficient.<\/p>\n

“For me, Hungary has no place in the EU anymore,” Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said in June, while Luxembourg\u2019s Foreign and European Affairs Minister Jean Asselborn suggested a referendum over its EU membership.<\/p>\n

A less dramatic rebuttal, this time targeting Poland, may come later this month. \u00a0The commission has given Warsaw until Aug.\u00a016 to comply with a European Court of Justice ruling against its system for disciplining judges it claims undermines judicial independence, or face fines \u2014 a dollars-and-cents reprisal it may increasingly use against other rule-of-law violators, reports suggest.<\/p>\n

Poland initially pushed back strongly. Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro warned in an interview his country should not remain within the EU “at any price,” accusing the bloc of “blackmail.” \u00a0But in a turnabout hours later on Friday, deputy prime minister and ruling party leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski said Warsaw would drop the disciplinary system in its current form.<\/p>\n

Last month, Brussels also launched legal proceedings against both Poland and Hungary for measures it claims violate the rights of LGBTQ people. A key target is new Hungarian legislation banning the presentation of LQBTQ issues to minors. In a first step, Hungary began restricting children\u2019s books promoting gay and gender-change content.<\/p>\n

Brussels still has plenty of champions. In June, 17 European leaders signed an open letter calling on the bloc to fight LGBT discrimination.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve never seen this kind of letter before by heads of state or government, analyst Maillard said, “They don\u2019t like doing this. But this time they did.\u201d<\/p>\n

The commission is also probing allegations Israeli spyware was used against EU media. Hungary is the only member state named in a broad media investigation into potential users of the Pegasus software.<\/p>\n

\u201cI really hope things will happen here, but it\u2019s unclear how much,\u201d said Scott Marcus, senior fellow at Brussels-based economic policy institute Bruegel. \u201cIn the case of Hungary, this probably just gets added to a long litany of complaints, so I don\u2019t think it changes the underlying situation very much.\u201d …<\/p>\n

Yet the most drastic options appear unlikely, if not impossible. There is no mechanism for ousting errant member states, and efforts to suspend their voting rights risk being difficult. Moreover, after Brexit, there is little EU appetite to further diminish its ranks, analysts say. Sanctioning an entire population, rather than its government, is also unfair.<\/p>\n

\u201cViktor Orban will not be there forever, so I don\u2019t think that kind of threat is helpful,\u201d said analyst Maillard of Hungary’s hardline prime minister. \u201cWe have to have unity with all our diversity and differences.\u201d https:\/\/www.voanews.com\/europe\/along-covid-19-eu-faces-more-fundamental-battle<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

So, the above says Europe is facing problems of unity.<\/p>\n

As regular readers of this COGwriter Church of God News page are aware, that was prophesied:<\/p>\n

Europe will change.<\/p>\n

A reorganized Europe is prophesied (Revelation 17:12) and will be not be democratic (cf. Daniel 11:23,36-37), but will be led by one the Bible calls the Beast (Revelation 17:13).<\/p>\n

As far as its military goes, it will develop a \u2018great army\u2019 (Daniel 11:25). For a time, be amazingly successful (Revelation 13:3-4): Europe will betray its \u2018friend\u2019 (Lamentations 1:1-2), destroy the USA (Daniel 11:39), and destroy a power based in the Islamic-dominated lands in the Middle East and North Africa (Daniel 11:40-43).<\/p>\n

Notice something from the old Radio Church of God from decades ago about a restoration of a “Holy Roman Empire” (bolding<\/strong> mine) :<\/p>\n

The attempt to unify Europe as one economic, military and political power bloc restoring the \u201cHoly Roman Empire,\u201d has been the one aim of all the \u201cgreat\u201d men who dominated European history<\/strong> from Napoleon\u2019s \u201cWaterloo\u201d until now. Mussolini, dominating Eritrea, Italian Somaliland, Libya, and conquering Ethiopia, did officially name his weak \u201cEmpire\u201d the \u201cRoman Empire.\u201d But now the dream of a mighty, powerful, resurrected Roman Empire at last is becoming a hard-driving reality.<\/p>\n

\u2026 nations of United Europe have succeeded in their aim far beyond the wildest dreams of the original signers of the Treaty of Rome. In far less time, at a far greater pace than anticipated, these nations of Europe have risen from the economic chaos of World War II to the dizzying heights of a standard of living never known to them before! With the present success well beyond the proportions of that expected three years ago, with a future success \u2014 in a world of peace \u2014 sure to produce a near \u2014 utopia, Western Europe is more concerned about war than any other economic and political entity on the face of this earth! \u201cThis is very probably the last year in which anyone except Europe will be able to negotiate with the Soviet Union for Europe!\u201d (London Sunday Times). These nations are ENJOYING their economic recovery and they will let nothing stand in its way \u2014 they will stop at nothing to keep \u2018What they have, and, GO ON TO MORE! A “Holy Roman Empire” would be one with Greco-Roman Christianity. Historically, that has involved the Church of Rome and Europe. Such an alliance is prophesied in Revelation 17.<\/p>\n

Although the timing was off, notice something from the old Worldwide Church of God in 1981:<\/p>\n

Throughout the Middle Ages, leaders considered the Church at Rome to be God\u2019s chosen instrument in spiritual matters. The Holy Roman Empire was regarded as God\u2019s chosen political organization over Western Christendom. Pope and Emperor were regarded as God\u2019s vice-regents on earth. This intimate alliance of Church and State served the needs of both institutions. The Empire exercised its political and military powers to defend religion and enforce internal submission through religious uniformity. The Church, in turn, acted as a glue for Europe, holding together the differing nationalities by the tie of common religion.<\/p>\n

This ideal in Church-State relations was never completely realized, as we have seen in the frequent conflicts between Emperors and Popes \u2026 numerous revivals of the Roman Empire have arisen in Europe in the centuries since the fall of ancient Rome.<\/p>\n

In Revelation 17, these revivals are represented by the seven heads of a wild animal. Six have already occurred, from Justinian to Mussolini. One last restoration of this great political system is yet to arise. This confederated Europe will be an immense political, military and economic power \u2014 a great Third Force in world affairs, a superpower in its own right. Prophecy further reveals that this powerful church-state union will be composed of \u201cten horns\u201d \u2014 meaning 10 nations or groups of nations (Rev. l7:3) \u2014 under the overall leadership of a single political figure (verse 13). Europe will again have a single political head of state!<\/p>\n

Moreover, prophecy foretells that a religious figure of unprecedented power and authority will sit astride the \u201cempire,\u201d directing it as a rider guides a horse (Rev. 17:3). To counter the ongoing spread of atheism, secularism and consumerism, the Vatican \u2014 as in centuries past \u2014 will be forced to become a major power in the international arena. The political muscle of the Papacy will be reinvigorated. In these turbulent last days of the 20th century, the \u201cspiritual unity\u201d of the Continent \u2014 as so often urged by recent Popes \u2014 will be realized! (Stump K. Despite unity issues, steps towards such an alliance are taking place now. In addition to biblical and Church of God predictions about this, Roman Catholic prophecies also predict this as well (see The Great Monarch: Biblical and Catholic Prophecies<\/a><\/span>).<\/p>\n

And COVID?<\/p>\n

COVID-19 has shown that much of the world is willing and able to implement the type of totalitarianism that the Bible shows that the coming Beast power will endorse. Furthermore, the Bible shows that this Beast will arise AFTER the start of something that sounds like a pandemic.<\/p>\n

The 6th chapter of the Book of Revelation tells of the ride of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. What do each represent? Is the novel coronavirus, also known as COVID-19, part of the fourth horseman? Does the Bible point to around 2 billion people dying from hunger, war, and the beasts of the earth? Was the ancient Roman Empire impacted by pestilences? What about the black death, also known as the Bubonic plague?
