President-elect Barack Obama is intent on making a lot of impact as soon as he takes office. One change may be to quickly increase a somewhat obscure form of abortion and increase the availability of perhaps others as the following two news items indicate:

Obama to Use Executive Orders for Quick Impact

Newsmax – Nov 9, 2008

WASHINGTON – President-elect Obama plans to use his executive powers to make an immediate impact when he takes office, perhaps reversing Bush administration policies on stem cell research and domestic drilling for oil and natural gas.

John Podesta, Obama’s transition chief, said Sunday Obama is reviewing President Bush’s executive orders on those issues and others as he works to undo policies enacted during eight years of Republican rule. He said the president can use such orders to move quickly on his own.

“There’s a lot that the president can do using his executive authority without waiting for congressional action, and I think we’ll see the president do that,” Podesta said. “I think that he feels like he has a real mandate for change. We need to get off the course that the Bush administration has set.”…

Bush used his executive power to limit federal spending on embryonic stem cell research, a position championed by opponents of abortion rights who argue that destroying embryos is akin to killing a fetus. Obama has supported the research…http://www.newsmax.com/insidecover/obama_Executive_Orders/2008/11/09/149341.html

Obama Plans Overturning 200 Executive Orders

Newsmax – Nov 8, 2008

President-elect Barack Obama is poised to reverse about 200 administration actions and executive orders implemented during the Bush administration.

According to The Washington Post, White House policies on climate change, stem cell research, reproductive rights and other issues could be undone soon after Obama takes office in January…

Policies Obama is expected to reverse:

  • A limit on federal funding of embryonic stem cell research.

  • A rule barring international family-planning groups that receive U.S. aid from counseling women about the availability of abortion.

  • The Bush administration’s decision to deny California the authority to regulate carbon dioxide emissions from automobiles. http://www.newsmax.com/insidecover/obama_executive_orders/2008/11/08/149287.html

Abortion support was listed in the latter news item above essentially as two of the three policies supporters of the President-elect seem to believe he will implement first. And the third may result in increased air pollution in California.

As a scientist, I will simply state that there are now (and have been for many years) ways to conduct stem cell research without going to the abortion route (to cite two: human umbilical cords and animal glandulars). It is sad that the USA President-elect may have decided that political expediency exceeds right to life.

    "Wat

Bas-relief at Angkor Wat, dated circa 1150, depicting a demon performing an abortion by pounding a mallet into a woman’s belly.

Just because all abortions in modern times do not appear to be as murderous as some in the past, does not make them less so. Sanitized sin is still sin.

Thus far, the President-elect has not seemed to have chosen the moral high ground–though there is a small chance he still might. The USA needs repentance or it may face sudden destruction (cf. 1 Thessalonians 5:3-4) next decade. Encouraging the destruction of human embryos is not the direction a nation that wants to please God would ever chose.
