Quit Lying to Yourself<\/h2>\n

No one wants to<\/span> be seen as a liar<\/a>. Liars are considered untrustworthy at best and immoral at worst. And yet, we are perfectly content to lie to ourselves all the time. \u201cI\u2019ll enjoy this sleeve of Oreos today because my diet starts tomorrow,\u201d I might tell myself. Or, \u201cI love my job; who cares that I complain about it constantly?\u201d Or even\u2014ironically\u2014\u201cI am always honest with myself.\u201d<\/p>\n

Deceiving yourself shouldn\u2019t make logical sense. After all, lying involves telling someone something you know<\/em> to be untrue. When you are both the liar and one lied to, this means you have to both know the truth and not<\/em> know the truth. In practice, that means willfully disregarding key knowledge<\/a> to arrive at a conclusion that is more convenient than what the facts appear to suggest.<\/p>\n

Everyone self-deceives, but that doesn\u2019t make it harmless. At high levels, it is associated with poor mental health. At moderate levels, it can temporarily protect the self-deceiver from bad feelings but still presents a barrier to the deep well-being that comes from living with integrity. To be really happy, we must learn to be completely honest with ourselves. …<\/p>\n

Related to that last statement, consider the following scriptures:<\/p>\n

8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us. (1 John 1:8-10, NKJV unless otherwise noted)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Repentance is needed so we can believe, live, and understand the truth.<\/p>\n

It should be pointed out that various non-biblical researchers have concluded that there are costs associated with self-deception:<\/p>\n

\n

The invisible downside of cheating in life<\/h2>\n

People who take shortcuts can trick themselves into believing they are smarter than they are, says Tom Stafford, and it comes back to bite them.<\/strong> …<\/p>\n

The researchers ran another experiment to check that the effect was really due to the cheaters\u2019 inflated belief in their own abilities. In this experiment, students were offered a cash reward for accurately predicting their scores on the second test. Sure enough, those who had been given the opportunity to cheat overestimated their ability and lost out \u2013 earning 20% less than the other students.<\/p>\n

The implication is that people in Chance’s experiment \u2013 people very much like you and me \u2013 had tricked themselves into believing they were smarter than they were. There may be benefits from doing this \u2013 confidence, satisfaction, or more easily gaining the trust of others \u2013 but there are also certainly disadvantages. Whenever circumstances change and you need to accurately predict how well you’ll do, it can cost to believe you’re better than you are.<\/p>\n

That self-deception has its costs has some interesting implications. Morally, most of us would say that self-deception is wrong. But aside from whether self-deception is undesirable, we should expect it to be present in all of us to some degree (because of the benefits), but to be limited as well (because of the costs).<\/p>\n

Self-deception isn’t something that is always better in larger doses \u2013 there must be an amount of it for which the benefits outweigh the costs, most of the time. We’re probably all self-deceiving to some degree. The irony being, because it is self-deception, we can’t know how often. http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/future\/story\/20150225-unexpected-downside-for-cheaters<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The last book of the Bible warns that those who believe and love lies, this would include false traditions as well as lying to oneself, will not be in the Kingdom of God if they will not change and keep God’s commandments:<\/p>\n

14 Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.<\/p>\n

15 For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and lewd men, and murderers, and idolaters, and whoever loveth and maketh a lie. (Revelation 22:14-15, KJV)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Jesus taught that Satan was a liar and the father of lies:<\/p>\n

44 You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it (John 8:44)<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Satan allowed his pride to deceive him (Ezekiel 28:14-18), and thus, he seems to have been the father of self-deception.<\/p>\n

Of course, Satan pushes deception and encourages humans to deceive themselves. Recall what happened to Eve:<\/p>\n

14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression. (1 Timothy 2:14)<\/p>\n

6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate. (Genesis 3:6-7)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Satan was involved, but the woman allowed herself to be deceived. This type of deception happens every day.<\/p>\n

Christians are to be set apart by the truth, which allows them to be set free from the deception Satan and others have foisted on this world:<\/p>\n

17 Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth. (John 17:17)<\/p>\n

31 … “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. 32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” (John 8:31-32)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In Matthew 7:22, Jesus warned that deceit and pride defile humans.<\/p>\n

But can Christians still fall victim to self-deception?<\/p>\n

Yes.<\/p>\n

Jesus warned that most Christians in the end times would be deceived:<\/p>\n

14 “And to the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write,<\/p>\n

‘These things says the Amen, the Faithful and True Witness, the Beginning of the creation of God: 15 “I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. 16 So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth. 17 Because you say, ‘I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing’ \u2014 and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked \u2014 18 I counsel you to buy from Me gold refined in the fire, that you may be rich; and white garments, that you may be clothed, that the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed; and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see. 19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Therefore be zealous and repent. (Revelation 3:14-19)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Although most Laodiceans do not believe that they are deceiving themselves, Jesus said that they are and have basically been blinded by their pride. Jesus tells the Laodicean Christians to repent–that they need to change.<\/p>\n

In addition to doctrine and how they lead their lives, there are serious prophetic deceptions that the Laodiceans have fallen for. A list of 38 prophetic deceptions that various Laodiceans (and those of Sardis) believe is in the article The Laodicean Church Era<\/a>. Believing several of these will ensure that Laodiceans will not realize that the Great Tribulation<\/a> is here until it is to late for most to flee (cf. Revelation 12:14-17).<\/p>\n

Many professing Christians have pride that their nation will last longer than it will. They will not take the biblically encouraged steps to become Philadelphian Christians (cf. Revelation 3:7-13; see also The Philadelphia Church Era<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Pride is a form of self-deception.<\/p>\n

With pride, people have overconfidence in themselves and this is deceiving. Humility involves seeing yourself more like you really are.<\/p>\n

The Book of Proverbs teaches:<\/p>\n

2 When pride comes, then comes shame;
\nBut with the humble is wisdom. (Proverbs 11:2)<\/p>\n

18 Pride goes before destruction,
\nAnd a haughty spirit before a fall. (Proverbs 16:18)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Pride and self-deception are common.<\/p>\n

Try not to fall for it and other snares that Satan pushes:<\/p>\n

6 … Therefore He says:<\/p>\n

“God resists the proud,
\nBut gives grace to the humble.”<\/p>\n

7 Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. 8 Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9 Lament and mourn and weep! Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up. (James 4:7-10)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The word of God is truth (John 17:17), hopefully you will believe it enough so that you will resist Satanically-encouraged self-deception (cf. James 4:7).<\/p>\n

12 Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him. … 14 But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. 15 Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.<\/p>\n

16 Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. (James 1:12,14-17)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

James would not have the above warning if it were not possible. Sadly, most end-time Christians have fallen victim to self-deception.<\/p>\n

YOU, even if you are a Christian, need to be on guard about it.<\/p>\n
