It would help Assad get more investments, said Ibrahim Al-Assil, senior fellow at the Middle East Institute.<\/p>\n<p><strong>China&#8217;s Middle East interests <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Syria&#8217;s admission to BRI is part of a larger Chinese strategy to ascertain influence in the Middle East, experts say.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Syria&#8217;s location offers a huge leverage for China. When any international player, if they have a leverage in Syria first, they can get some leverage over so many of its neighbors. We&#8217;re talking about Turkey which is important for China. We&#8217;re talking about Iraq, where more than 10% of China&#8217;s oil comes from. We&#8217;re talking about Israel. We&#8217;re talking about Jordan. We&#8217;re also talking about some global powers in Syria like Russia and the United States. So it&#8217;s more of geo-economic interests than just the pure economic interests for China to increase its investments in Syria,&#8221; Al-Assil told VOA.<\/p>\n<p>As of December, <a class=\"wsw__a\" href=\"https:\/\/greenfdc.org\/countries-of-the-belt-and-road-initiative-bri\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">17 countries in the Middle East and North Africa<\/a> have joined the BRI. Experts say the inclusion of the Middle East in the initiative is rooted in Chinese history and is a symbolic move for Beijing.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;China is trying to reconstitute the ancient Silk Road, and Syria was part of the Silk Road, so that was something that was emphasized in the announcement that China had with Syria,&#8221; David Sacks, research fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, told VOA.<\/p>\n<p>There are also economic interests.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;China has become a net importer of energy in 1993, and in 2017, it became the largest crude oil importer in the world, and almost half of that oil, 47% to 48%, comes from the Middle East. And that&#8217;s why the Middle East is going to just rise in significance in the next decade for China,&#8221; Al-Assil said. &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>China&#8217;s risky investment <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Any form of Chinese investment in Syria, however, is a risk because of the country&#8217;s dire financial situation, analysts say.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I don&#8217;t think the Chinese will be able to get any real return on any investments inside Syria. The economy is still shattered, the country is fragmented, the corruption is deep within the Syrian state institutions, and that is not going to change anytime soon with the current conditions,&#8221; Al-Assil said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It seems highly unlikely Syria would be in any position to repay major loans for infrastructure in the future,&#8221; Sacks told VOA.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Geopolitical consequences <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Some analysts say Syria&#8217;s participation in BRI reveals how China and its longtime ally Russia are showcasing a united foreign policy front. Moscow entered the Syrian conflict in 2015 in support of the Assad regime. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.voanews.com\/a\/china-s-belt-and-road-risk-in-syria-may-reap-big-rewards-\/6415768.html\">https:\/\/www.voanews.com\/a\/china-s-belt-and-road-risk-in-syria-may-reap-big-rewards-\/6415768.html<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Well, yes, there are geopolitical consequences of this. Yes, China, Russia, and many nations are trying to build closer ties.<\/p>\n<p>Syria is in the Middle East and many nations in that region are also involved with China in its Belt and Road Initiative.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, it should be pointed out that Syria borders Israel and it is not too far from Har Megiddo, biblically referred to as Armageddon&#8211;when I looked at a map today, the Syrian border appeared to be within about 40 km or around 25 miles away for &#8220;Armageddon.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Presuming the Initiative goes forward in Syria, China will be assisting in putting in infrastructure&#8211;most likely roads.<\/p>\n<p>Roads that perhaps some troops may use in order to get to the gathering place in the Bible called Armageddon.<\/p>\n<p>The term Armagedgon is only used once in the Bible. It is associated with the sixth of seven bowls of God&#8217;s wrath:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>1 Then I heard a loud voice from the temple saying to the seven angels, &#8220;Go and pour out the bowls of the wrath of God on the earth.&#8221; (Revelation 16:1)<\/p>\n<p>12 Then the sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates, and its water was dried up, so that the way of the kings from the east might be prepared. 13 And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs coming out of the mouth of the dragon, out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet. 14 For they are spirits of demons, performing signs, which go out to the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty.<\/p>\n<p>15 &#8220;Behold, I am coming as a thief. Blessed is he who watches, and keeps his garments, lest he walk naked and they see his shame.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>16 And they gathered them together to the place called in Hebrew, Armageddon. (Revelation 16:12-16)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>For the armies to gather there, they must cross over land to get to Armageddon.
