Grateful he called me.<\/p>\n<p>The Bill today seeks to legitimise the UK govt breaking the law.<\/p>\n<p>From a very basic legal point of view, however, no action by the U.K. can in any way vary its Protocol and treaty obligations. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/MPjExAQeQq\">pic.twitter.com\/MPjExAQeQq<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Thomas Byrne (@ThomasByrneTD) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ThomasByrneTD\/status\/1536297616182587392?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 13, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><br \/>\n<a href=\"\/cogwriter.htm\">COGwriter<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The German news source <em>Deutsche Welle<\/em> reported the following:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h2>Britain looks to change post-Brexit trade rules with Northern Ireland<\/h2>\n<p>13 June 2022<\/p>\n<p>The British government on Monday was set to outline changes to the post-Brexit rules that govern trade with Northern Ireland.<\/p>\n<p>The European Union says it will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/eu-uk-trade-war-looming-as-northern-ireland-protocol-tensions-hit-boiling-point\/a-59480437\">respond with all measures<\/a> at its disposal if Britain pushes ahead with unilateral changes to the Brexit deal on Northern Ireland. It has said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/eu-halting-northern-ireland-uk-checks-would-be-absolute-breach\/a-60642491\">any changes would breach international law<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier in the day, UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said London wanted a &#8220;negotiated solution&#8221; to the issue with Brussels. The UK government had remained quiet about the details of its plan but said they will be &#8220;lawful and correct.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A day before the new legislation was to be unveiled, the head of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/what-sinn-feins-win-could-mean-for-northern-ireland-uk\/a-61720107\">Irish nationalist Sinn Fein party<\/a>, Mary Lou McDonald, accused UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson&#8217;s government of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/sinn-fein-leader-uk-about-to-break-international-law\/a-62107761\">choosing a &#8220;destructive path.&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Johnson himself\u00a0said the changes would help\u00a0ease pro-British unionist concerns over the Brexit deal.<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of the announcement, Irish Foreign Minister Simon Coveney said the changes marked &#8220;a particular low point in the UK&#8217;s approach to Brexit.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The UK&#8217;s unilateral approach is not in the best interest of Northern Ireland. Far from fixing problems, this legislation will create a whole new set of uncertainties and damage.&#8221; &#8230;<\/p>\n<h2>What changes have been mentioned?<\/h2>\n<p>The expected changes had included the setting up of a &#8220;green channel&#8221; for goods moving from Britain to Northern Ireland that are destined to stay in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>They are expected to eliminate European Union state aid rules on subsidies provided to businesses by public authorities in the province.<\/p>\n<p>UK government ministers have also previously said that they wish to no longer allow the European Court of Justice to be the sole arbiter of any disputes, arguing that British courts should have some role. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/britain-looks-to-change-post-brexit-trade-rules-with-northern-ireland\/a-62110810\">https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/britain-looks-to-change-post-brexit-trade-rules-with-northern-ireland\/a-62110810<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As the tweet at the beginning of this post shows, the Irish government is also not pleased.<\/p>\n<p>When my wife and I were driving around Ireland a few weeks ago, Irish radio talked about this proposed bill and those of the Republic of Ireland kept referring to it as illegal. Irish radio also accused the UK government of other illegal moves. It was obvious listening to Irish news radio that the Irish were deeply upset with the government of the UK.<\/p>\n<p>That being said, here are other reports about the UK bill:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>June 13, 2022<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__large__nEccO body__base__22dCE body__large_body__FV5_X article-body__element__2p5pI\" data-testid=\"paragraph-0\">LONDON, June 13 (Reuters) &#8211; British foreign minister Liz Truss told the European Union&#8217;s Maros Sefcovic on Monday the bloc must be willing to change post-Brexit rules governing trade with Northern Ireland, repeating that London wanted a &#8220;negotiated solution&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__large__nEccO body__base__22dCE body__large_body__FV5_X article-body__element__2p5pI\" data-testid=\"paragraph-1\">&#8220;Spoke to (European Commission) Vice President Maros Sefcovic to discuss the legislation we are announcing today to fix the problems with the Northern Ireland Protocol and restore political stability,&#8221; Truss said on Twitter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__large__nEccO body__base__22dCE body__large_body__FV5_X article-body__element__2p5pI\" data-testid=\"paragraph-2\">&#8220;Our preference is a negotiated solution, but EU must be willing to change the Protocol itself.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__large__nEccO body__base__22dCE body__large_body__FV5_X article-body__element__2p5pI\" data-testid=\"paragraph-3\">The EU side criticised London&#8217;s moves to dismantle the so-called Northern Irish protocol.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__large__nEccO body__base__22dCE body__large_body__FV5_X article-body__element__2p5pI\" data-testid=\"paragraph-4\">&#8220;Unilateral action is damaging to mutual trust &amp; a formula for uncertainty,&#8221; Sefcovic said on Twitter. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/britain-urges-eu-change-post-brexit-trade-rules-with-nireland-2022-06-13\/\">https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/britain-urges-eu-change-post-brexit-trade-rules-with-nireland-2022-06-13\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>June 13, 2022<\/p>\n<p>LONDON (AP) \u2014 Britain\u2019s government on Monday proposed new legislation that would unilaterally rewrite post-Brexit trade rules for Northern Ireland, despite\u00a0opposition from some U.K. lawmakers\u00a0and EU officials who say the move violates international law.<\/p>\n<p>The proposed bill seeks to remove customs checks on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/world\/uk-and-eu-head-for-new-brexit-fight-over-northern-ireland\">some goods entering Northern Ireland<\/a>\u00a0from the rest of the U.K. That will override parts of the trade treaty that Prime Minister Boris Johnson signed with the European Union less than two years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Britain\u2019s government maintained its move is justified under international law because of the \u201cgenuinely exceptional situation,\u201d and Foreign Secretary Liz Truss blamed the EU for blocking a negotiated settlement. The European Commission said it could take legal action against the U.K.<\/p>\n<p>Existing trade rules \u201cprovide business operators in Northern Ireland with access to the EU single market for goods. The U.K. government\u2019s approach puts this access \u2014 and related opportunities \u2014 at risk,\u201d said European Commission Vice President Maros Sefcovic.<\/p>\n<p>In Ireland, Prime Minister Micheal Martin said it was \u201cvery regrettable for a country like the U.K. to renege on an international treaty.\u201d German Chancellor Olaf Scholz echoed the sentiment, saying there was \u201cno reason\u201d for the U.K. to make such a move.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a rejection of all the agreements we reached between the European Union and Great Britain,\u201d Scholz said. \u201cThe European Union will react to this as one and it has the whole toolbox at its disposal.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/world\/uk-moves-to-rewrite-brexit-trade-rules-around-northern-ireland-eu-threatens-legal-action\">https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/world\/uk-moves-to-rewrite-brexit-trade-rules-around-northern-ireland-eu-threatens-legal-action<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Let me add here that Irish news radio and television news also accused the UK of violating the Good Friday protocol while we were in Ireland.<\/p>\n<p>There is a lot of animosity in the Republic of Ireland against the UK.<\/p>\n<p>This proposal will make it worse.<\/p>\n<p>Ireland, and even most in Northern Ireland, did not want the UK to leave the European Union.<\/p>\n<p>Although most in Northern Ireland still seem to want to be in the UK, most in the Republic of Ireland seem to want the entire island as part of it, or at least part of the EU.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, I strongly believe that the time will come when Northern Ireland will be part of the Republic of Ireland.<\/p>\n<p>That is something that the Constitution of the Republic of Ireland calls for.<\/p>\n<p>Plus, it is consistent with biblical prophecies involving the descendants of Ephraim, which includes the UK.<\/p>\n<p>While the democratic way is one way for the unification, if that does not work, military pressure will accomplish this (cf.
