Marco Rubio Slams French President\u2019s Call to \u2018Break Away\u2019 from U.S.: \u2018Does Macron Speak for Europe?\u2019<\/a>) is, like President Macron, pushing for the EU to have a different approach to China from the USA:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h2>The EU\u2019s divided approach on China might be coming to an end \u2014 and the U.S. is unlikely to be happy about it<\/h2>\n<p>April 18, 2023<\/p>\n<p class=\"subheading\">European Union officials on Tuesday<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>called for a new and joint approach toward China, following French President\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/emmanuel-macron\/\">Emmanuel Macron<\/a>\u2019s controversial comments on Taiwan earlier this month. However, this new strategy is unlikely to please the United States. &#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"a8d-pre\">\u201cI believe we can, and we must, carve out our own distinct European approach that also leaves space for us to cooperate with other partners, too,\u201d Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission \u2014\u00a0 the executive arm of the EU \u2014 said during a speech on Tuesday. &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>She argued that the relationship with China \u201cis too important for us not to define our own European strategy and principles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>China was the largest source of EU imports and the third largest buyer of EU goods in 2022, according to Eurostat, highlighting Beijing\u2019s economic importance for Europe. &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe point I made in Beijing is that we do not want to cut economic, societal, political and scientific ties,\u201d von der Leyen said at the European Parliament in Strasburg.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut there is an urgent need to rebalance our relationship on the basis of transparency, predictability and reciprocity,\u201d she stressed, adding that \u201cthe central part of our future China strategy must be economic de-risking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This marks a stark difference from the American perspective, as U.S. officials believe that a complete dissociation from Beijing \u2014 known as de-coupling \u2014 is the best approach. &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Macron said the EU needs to have its own policy on Taiwan and to avoid following the U.S. agenda on the matter. He later added that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/je-ne-regrette-rien-macron-doubles-down-on-taiwan-comments-les-echos-us-backlash-from-white-house\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">being allies does not mean being vassals<\/a>, reinforcing the idea of an independent EU policy. &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe remain fundamentally committed to EU\u2019s One China Policy. We see no reason to question it. We must lower the tension; avoid verbal outbursts or provocations that can only fuel mistrust. \u00a0However, any attempt to change the status quo by force would be unacceptable,\u201d Josep Borrell, the EU\u2019s top diplomat, said in a statement. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/04\/18\/eu-calls-for-independent-policies-on-china-after-macron-disputed-taiwan-comments.html\">https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/04\/18\/eu-calls-for-independent-policies-on-china-after-macron-disputed-taiwan-comments.html<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The EU\u2019s One China Policy means that Taiwan is part of the Peoples Republic of China.<\/p>\n<p>China believes that there is one China and that Taiwan is part of China. The USA officially has a \u201cOne China policy.\u201d Meaning that it officially does not recognize Taiwan as independent from China.<\/p>\n<p>Notice:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The\u00a0<b>One China principle<\/b>\u00a0is the position held by the\u00a0<a title=\"China\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/China\">People\u2019s Republic of China<\/a>\u00a0(PRC) that there is only one sovereign state under the name China, with the PRC serving as the sole legitimate government of that China, and Taiwan is a part of China.<sup id=\"cite_ref-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/One_China#cite_note-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-2\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/One_China#cite_note-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0It is opposed to the idea that there are\u00a0<a title=\"Two Chinas\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Two_Chinas\">two states holding the name \u201cChina\u201d<\/a>, the People\u2019s Republic of China (PRC) and the\u00a0<a title=\"Taiwan\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Taiwan\">Republic of China<\/a>\u00a0(ROC); as well as the idea that China and Taiwan\u00a0<a title=\"One Country on Each Side\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/One_Country_on_Each_Side\">form two separate countries<\/a>. \u2026<sup id=\"cite_ref-3\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"ILfuVd\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"hgKElc\">The One China policy refers to a United States policy \u2026 It \u201cacknowledges that all Chinese on either side of the Taiwan Strait maintain there is but one China and that Taiwan is a part of China\u201d and \u201cdoes not challenge that position.\u201d (One China. Daniel 11:39).<\/p>\n<p>As far as Europe taking militaristic steps away from the USA, after Donald Trump became President of the USA, most of the EU nations formed a military alliance called PESCO (PErmanent Structured COoperation).
