{"id":81301,"date":"2023-04-27T16:00:03","date_gmt":"2023-04-28T00:00:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cogwriter.com\/news\/?p=81301"},"modified":"2023-04-28T07:44:37","modified_gmt":"2023-04-28T15:44:37","slug":"hd-survey-finds-less-than-half-of-professing-born-again-christians-believe-jesus-was-sinless","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cogwriter.com\/news\/religious-news\/hd-survey-finds-less-than-half-of-professing-born-again-christians-believe-jesus-was-sinless\/","title":{"rendered":"HD: Survey Finds Less Than Half of Professing \u2018Born-Again Christians\u2019 Believe Jesus Was Sinless"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-56593\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cogwriter.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Losing-My-Religion.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"327\" height=\"303\" \/><br \/>\nREM song cover<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/cogwriter.htm\">COGwriter<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Protestant <em>Harbinger Daily<\/em> site posted the following:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h2>Survey Finds Less Than Half of Professing \u2018Born-Again Christians\u2019 Believe Jesus Was Sinless<\/h2>\n<p>In a recent survey of born-again Christians, less than half claimed to believe that Jesus lived a sinless life while on Earth, or that human life is sacred.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arizonachristian.edu\/category\/crc\/awvi\/\">The American Worldview Inventory<\/a> (AWVI) 2023\u2014 a national representative survey of 2,000 adults, including 650 born-again Christians, was conducted in January by the Cultural Research Center at Arizona Christian University. &#8230;\u00a0among born-again Christians, those who believe the Bible is unambiguous in its teaching about abortion dropped from 58% in 2020 to 44% in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>The survey revealed another 14-point decline among the same group who think that Jesus Christ lived a sinless life during His time on Earth, dropping from 58% three years ago to 44% this year.<\/p>\n<p>The other double-digit decline among born-again Christians was a 12-point downturn in people saying human life is sacred, down from 60% in 2020 to 48% in 2023. &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Other declines among born-again Christians in 2023 compared to 2020 are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Those who believe that they have a unique, God-given calling or purpose for their life was sliced nearly in half, from 88% to 46%.<\/li>\n<li>Those claiming that they are deeply committed to practicing their religious faith dropped from a very robust 85% in 2020 to 50%.<\/li>\n<li>Adults attending an evangelical church is down from 28% pre-pandemic to 21% post-pandemic.<\/li>\n<li>Those who believe that God is the basis of all truth declined from 69% in 2020 to 63% this year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Barna said the significant changes found in the study are highly unusual.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost religious beliefs change over the course of generations, not a few years,\u201d he said in a press release \u201cHowever, we know that major life crises have the capacity to introduce substantial change quickly in the foundations of people\u2019s faith. 04\/26\/23 <a href=\"https:\/\/harbingersdaily.com\/survey-finds-less-than-half-of-born-again-christians-believe-jesus-was-sinless\/\">https:\/\/harbingersdaily.com\/survey-finds-less-than-half-of-born-again-christians-believe-jesus-was-sinless\/<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is not a surprise. As the US becomes more secular, its Protestant population has been heading that way.<\/p>\n<p>As far as the decline in the view about the Bible, the reality is that &#8216;born-again&#8217; Protestantism is NOT truly based on the Bible. It has accepted many non-biblical traditions, hence it is little wonder that its adherents see a lot of ambiguity in scripture. Protestants often claim sola Scriptura, but do not actually believe it or practice &#8220;the faith once for all given to the saints&#8221; (Jude 3; see also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cogwriter.com\/protestant-ccog-differences.pdf\">Hope of Salvation: How the\u00a0<em>Continuing<\/em>\u00a0Church of God Differs from Protestantism<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>As far as God&#8217;s purpose for people, that is something that Protestants (and most others, including in the Churches of God) do not know. Why Did God Make You?<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>We have also seen over the years, prominent Protestants publicly rejecting their faith.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Guardian<\/em> posted the following this past December:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"dcr-8413l\">\u2018I couldn\u2019t pretend any more\u2019: readers on why they left the Christian faith<\/h2>\n<p class=\"dcr-2v2zi4\"><span class=\"dcr-2v2zi4\">Diana, 44, a retail worker from Yorkshire, was raised in a Christian fundamentalist home and always struggled with her faith; concepts such as predestination and creationism \u201cnever made sense\u201d to her.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-2v2zi4\">\u201cLosing my faith was a process of gradual disengagement,\u201d she says. \u201cAt some point, &#8230; I finally admitted to myself that I didn\u2019t believe in a supernatural being, and couldn\u2019t pretend any more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-2v2zi4\">Today, Diana is an atheist &#8230; Various people cited similar experiences.\u00a0 &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>For James, a programme manager from Birmingham, it was more of a creeping realisation as he got older that certain aspects of Christian dogma were incompatible with critical thinking.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-2v2zi4\">\u201cAt some point in my late teens the stuff that provided comfort, such as the idea of an omnipotent, omniscient god, suddenly started to feel more like a fairytale you tell kids to help them sleep, and posed questions. And then I thought: \u2018If God knows exactly what I\u2019m going to do, and lets it happen, then I no longer have a free will\u2019,\u201d the 44-year-old says. &#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-2v2zi4\">James describes himself as an atheist now &#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-2v2zi4\">Pauline, 54, who is retired and lives in Bristol, says certain Christian teachings became irreconcilable with her values over time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-2v2zi4\">\u201cI probably stopped calling myself a Christian in my 30s. I was brought up as a strict Roman Catholic with Irish parents. We always went to church on Sunday, and for most of my childhood it was a ritual that was nice and comforting,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-2v2zi4\">But as she got older she began to have doubts. &#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-2v2zi4\">During the Covid lockdowns, Stephen Hunsaker, 28, hatime to step back and found he felt \u201cso much better\u201d when no longer practising his religion. It reached number 4 on the Billboard charts. Throughout the years, I have thought about that when various ones fell away from the truth (see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cogwriter.com\/falling-away.htm\">The Falling Away: The Bible and WCG Teachings<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>However, the song also came to mind several years ago when I read about a Protestant leader named Marty Sampson who then lost his religion. He was then being praised by atheists.<\/p>\n<p>His announcement came after a well-known Protestant dating-marriage author, Joshua Harris, renounced his beliefs, announced he was getting divorced, and offered apologies to the LGBTQ crowd.<\/p>\n<p>Neither of these men had the biblical faith. And both have also moved away from Protestantism.<\/p>\n<p>Here is some information related to Joshua Harris:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A former pastor who stunned the evangelical movement last month by announcing he was &#8220;falling away&#8221; from Christianity and recanting his teachings on sexuality marched in the Vancouver Pride Parade over the weekend. &#8230; on July 26, Harris posted on Instagram that he had undergone &#8220;a massive shift in regard to my faith in Jesus.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The popular phrase for this is &#8216;deconstruction,&#8217; the biblical phrase is &#8216;falling away,&#8221; he added. &#8220;By all the measurements that I have for defining a Christian, I am not a Christian.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In the same post, he specifically apologized for his previous opposition to same-sex marriage and LGBT rights.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;To the LGBTQ+ community, I want to say that I am sorry for the views that I taught in my books and as a pastor regarding sexuality. I regret standing against marriage equality, for not affirming you and your place in the church, and for any ways that my writing and speaking contributed to a culture of exclusion and bigotry. I hope you can forgive me.\u2063\u2063&#8221; 08\/08\/19 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/joshua-harris-gay-pride-parade-evangelical-1453273\">https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/joshua-harris-gay-pride-parade-evangelical-1453273<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Bible not only strongly condemns that LGBTQ agenda, and states that those who remain part of it will not be in God&#8217;s kingdom (1 Corinthians 6:9-10), it also says it is wrong to approve people being part of such sexually immoral lifestyles (Romans 1:18-32). This was also clearly taught by second century Christian leaders such as <a href=\"\/polycarp.htm\">Polycarp of Smyrna<\/a> and <a href=\"\/melito.htm\">Melito of Sardis<\/a>. Apparently Joshua Harris now considers biblical morality and early Christianity a form of bigotry. How many miracles happen. Not many. No one talks about it. Why is the Bible full of contradictions? No one talks about it. Christians can be the most judgmental people on the planet\u2014they can also be some of the most beautiful and loving people. Essentially according to it all religions are about the same. Music is present all over in the 21st century. How does music affect the mind and body? Is it okay to listen to music? Should lyrics matter? Are there biblical principles to consider related to music? Can Christians listen to secular music? Is harp music always good? Is \u201cContemporary Christian Music\u201d biblically appropriate? Has money overly influenced the \u201cChristian music industry\u201d? What is the Pentecostal \u2018latter rain\u2019? What about songs about heaven? Do groups like Hillsong promote the gospel of the kingdom or a false gospel message? What type of songs did early Christians sing? Did the old Worldwide Church of God fall because of its 1974 hymnal? Are psalms and songs in \u201cThe Bible Hymnal\u201d of the <em>Continuing<\/em> Church of God consistent with the practices of original Christians? Behold, I will attend to you for the evil of your doings,&#8221; says the Lord. (Jeremiah 23:2)<\/p>\n<p>34 &#8220;Wail, shepherds, and cry!<br \/>\nRoll about in the ashes,<br \/>\nYou leaders of the flock!<br \/>\nFor the days of your slaughter and your dispersions are fulfilled;<br \/>\nYou shall fall like a precious vessel.\u00a0 (Jeremiah 25:34)<\/p>\n<p>1 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 2 &#8220;Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel, prophesy and say to them, &#8216;Thus says the Lord God to the shepherds: &#8220;Woe to the shepherds of Israel who feed themselves! Should not the shepherds feed the flocks? 3 You eat the fat and clothe yourselves with the wool; you slaughter the fatlings, but you do not feed the flock. 4 The weak you have not strengthened, nor have you healed those who were sick, nor bound up the broken, nor brought back what was driven away, nor sought what was lost; but with force and cruelty you have ruled them. (Ezekiel 34:1-4)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Jesus, Himself, condemned the religious leaders of His day as &#8220;Hypocrites&#8221; (Matthew 15:7, 23:13-15), so having false pastors now should not be a surprise.<\/p>\n<p>The Apostle Paul also warned about them:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>13 For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ. 14 And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light. 15 Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also transform themselves into ministers of righteousness, whose end will be according to their works. (2 Corinthians 11:13-15)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If he would have practiced the true biblical faith, Marty Sampson should have understood that.<\/p>\n<p>To his other point, how many miracles happen?<\/p>\n<p>As many as God feels are needed for His plan&#8211;and sometimes what we consider to be miracles are rare (cf. 1 Samuel 3:1).<\/p>\n<p>In addition to miraculous healings, the Bible shows God also sometimes intervenes with prophetic dreams (Numbers 12:6; watch also <a dir=\"ltr\" title=\"Dreams, COGs, and One Man Rule\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=XdXwWy4U7pQ\" aria-describedby=\"description-id-575525\" data-sessionlink=\"feature=c4-overview&amp;ei=ql8_VpfFGcONqQXr8p6IDA&amp;ved=CB0Qvxs\">Dreams, COGs, and One Man Rule<\/a>)&#8211;which were prophesied for the last days (Acts 2:17). And we in the <em>Continuing<\/em> Church of God do talk about them (for details see <a title=\"Dreams, the Bible, and the Continuing Church of God\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cogwriter.com\/dreams.htm\">Dreams, the Bible, the Radio Church of God, and the <em>Continuing<\/em> Church of God<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Now as to his point about contradictions, no, the original biblical text had no contradictions&#8211;but various translations do. Yet, much in the Bible does contradict what passes for &#8216;Christianity&#8217; in the 21st century. Sadly, Marty Sampson seems to have been influenced by theologians that do not accept the original Christian faith.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s take another look at something Marty Sampson wrote:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>How can God be love yet send four billion people to a place, all \u2018coz they don\u2019t believe? No one talks about it.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Actually, that is NOT His plan, but a distortion that many Protestants, starting with Martin Luther and John Calvin, had. The biblical God \u201cis love&#8221; (1 John 4:8-16) and unlike the Protestant deity:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">20 Our God is the God of salvation (Psalms 68:20).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">As to his claim no one talks about it, we have put out eight sermons as well as promoting the reading of a book that deals with the errors in misunderstanding God&#8217;s plan, for those not called to be true Christian believers in this age:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cogwriter.com\/universal-offer-of-salvation-apokatastasis.pdf\">Universal OFFER of Salvation, Apokatastasis: Can God save the lost in an age to come? One, Joshua Harris, who was known for his books on dating and marriage, also announced he was getting a divorce and then he endorsed homosexual marriage and other aspects of the LGBTQ agenda. The other, Martin Sampson, who was known for his writings and connections to the Hillsong church, laid out his criticisms of his Protestant faith\u2013he said he wanted genuine truth? Is science or the word of God the source of truth? Were either of these Protestant men \u201ctrue Christians\u201d? Have they overlooked various proofs? Were there scriptures that they overlooked? If you wish to be a true and faithful Christian, are there instructions in God\u2019s word that if you follow you will never stumble or lose the true religion? The term &#8220;Friendly Atheist&#8221; of Satan&#8217;s supporters who try to look like ministers of righteousness:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-56597\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cogwriter.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/friendlyatheist-logo-lg.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"315\" height=\"97\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cogwriter.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/friendlyatheist-logo-lg.png 413w, https:\/\/www.cogwriter.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/friendlyatheist-logo-lg-300x92.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 315px) 100vw, 315px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Another prominent Christian is now publicly saying he\u2019s no longer a believer. (For once, <strong><a class=\"decorated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/friendlyatheist.patheos.com\/2019\/08\/08\/ex-purity-advocate-joshua-harris-angers-christians-by-going-to-a-pride-parade\/\">Joshua Harris<\/a><\/strong> started a positive trend!)<\/p>\n<p>This time, it\u2019s Australian songwriter <strong>Marty Sampson<\/strong>, well-known in the contemporary Christian music scene &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not clear when Sampson began this road to reality. I wonder if he had doubts when he was still writing Christian music or whether something specific led him to question religion more recently.<\/p>\n<p>Either way, it would be completely unfair to say <a class=\"decorated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/reformationcharlotte.org\/2019\/08\/11\/highly-popular-hillsong-songwriter-renounces-faith\/\">he <em>wasn\u2019t<\/em> a True Christian\u2122<\/a>. Yes he was. He just woke up. <a href=\"https:\/\/friendlyatheist.patheos.com\/2019\/08\/12\/famed-christian-songwriter-renounces-religion-im-genuinely-losing-my-faith\/\">https:\/\/friendlyatheist.patheos.com\/2019\/08\/12\/famed-christian-songwriter-renounces-religion-im-genuinely-losing-my-faith\/<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>By no biblical standard was Marty Sampson a true Christian. He never understood, &#8220;the faith once for all delivered to the saints&#8221; (Jude 3). Basically, he practiced a modified form of the sun god religion called <a href=\"http:\/\/cogwriter.com\/christianity-mithraism.htm\">Mithraism<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And if atheists were really into true science, they would renounce atheism.
