The name literally means \u201cnew nicotine-like insecticides\u201d. Like nicotine, the neonicotinoids act on certain kinds of receptors in the nerve synapse. They are much more toxic to invertebrates, like insects, than they are to mammals, birds and other higher organisms.<\/em><\/p>\n One thing that has made neonicotinoid insecticides popular in pest control is their water solubility, which allows them to be applied to soil and be taken up by plants.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n Today, many seeds that our farmers use actually come pre-coated with neonicotinoids. …<\/p>\n After seeing the impact that neonicotinoids had on the environment, Europe banned them.<\/p>\n But they are still legal here in the United States even though they have been blamed for killing bees\u00a0on an absolutely massive scale<\/a>\u2026<\/p>\n Of course it isn\u2019t just bees that are dying.<\/p>\n According to an incredible article that has just been published\u00a0by\u00a0The Intercept<\/em><\/a>, countless other species have been hit really hard as well\u2026<\/p>\n Honeybees have captured almost all the attention for the dangers of neonics, but they are hardly the only species in decline because of the chemical. Studies have tied neonics to the disappearance of\u00a0native bees<\/a>,\u00a0butterflies<\/a>,\u00a0mayflies<\/a>,\u00a0dragonflies<\/a>,\u00a0amphipods<\/a>, and a range of\u00a0waterborne insects<\/a>, as well as\u00a0earthworms<\/a>\u00a0and other insect invertebrates. Several species of\u00a0bumblebees<\/a>\u00a0in the U.S. and Europe are approaching extinction, a die-off\u00a0researchers<\/a>\u00a0say is tied to the use of neonics and other pesticides.<\/em><\/p>\n In September, a study released in the academic journal Science\u00a0revealed<\/a>\u00a0that migrating songbirds suffered immediate weight loss following the consumption of only one or two seeds treated with neonics.
