It has been going on for about two years and it involves Anthony Blinken, Gina Raimondo, the Commerce Secretary, and Katherine Tai, the US Trade Representative getting together with their European counterparts, Margrethe Vestager, who is the\u2026 She has a long title, but basically she\u2019s the European Commission\u2019s digital chief and her trade counterpart, Valdis Dombrovskis.<\/p>\n<p>They get together, they hash out hopefully thorny issues on trade and tech to create some sort of transatlantic unity. &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>I mean you look at, okay, let\u2019s take OpenAI and Microsoft, Google, Meta as maybe four who have arguably the most invested in AI, and they\u2019re all American companies. There was a commercial interest to do this, and that\u2019s a logical way to go about this.<\/p>\n<p>You then look at what goes on in Europe, and I\u2019m not saying that as sitting here in London, but they have a very different approach to this because there are fewer companies in Europe doing this, and therefore it is seen as a potential, another area where the Americans can dominate. &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>I think there are a lot of people in the administration who also want to protect Americans, right. This is not about letting industry do what industry does. <a href=\"https:\/\/techpolicy.press\/a-recap-of-the-us-eu-trade-and-technology-council-meeting-with-mark-scott\/\">https:\/\/techpolicy.press\/a-recap-of-the-us-eu-trade-and-technology-council-meeting-with-mark-scott\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text__paragraph \">The trade relationship between the U.S. and the EU used to hinge on issues such as whether Americans could label their cheese using European names like Gorgonzola \u2014 or whether Europeans should buy U.S. chicken washed in chlorine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text__paragraph \">The focus now is more existential\u2014and could make trade disputes more difficult to resolve. &#8230; The dramatic shift, which was on display at meetings between U.S. and EU officials in Sweden this week &#8230; The U.S.-EU Trade and Technology Council, the body that met in Sweden, is taking a more outward-looking approach than previous efforts aimed at increasing commerce between the U.S. and EU, whose 27 member nations negotiate trade as a single bloc. &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>The Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, a traditional free trade negotiation started under former President Barack Obama, put U.S. and EU commercial interests front and center. Those talks eventually died as European leaders came under intense political pressure\u2013driven by a grassroots movement that viewed closer economic integration with the U.S. with growing alarm. &#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text__paragraph \">Skepticism remains high over whether the TTC will deliver concrete results to address these issues or head off any future disagreements.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-text__paragraph \">\u201cYou have to cook with the ingredients that you have, which right now is TTC. And they\u2019re trying to make the best out of it. [But] it\u2019s not a lot,\u201d said former European Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmstr\u00f6m, who is now a senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2023\/06\/03\/us-europe-china-trade-00099954\">https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2023\/06\/03\/us-europe-china-trade-00099954<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>They held their trade meeting, but there are many areas of trade tensions between the EU and USA; tech and protecting industries are two major ones.<\/p>\n<p>Notice also the following from last December:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em>The EU is beginning to wake up and realise that its relationship with the U.S. has reached farcical levels of master and slave.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Remarkably, the EU is beginning to wake up and realise not only that it is more servile to the U.S. than ever before, but in fact the relationship has reached farcical levels of master and slave since the Ukraine war started. And yet, despite the EU\u2019s chief diplomat recently refusing to be drawn into a conflict scenario with China and MEPs pathetically voting to deem Russia a terrorist state, it was not the EU which came to the conclusion. It was the French president Emmanuel Macron.<\/p>\n<p>Nine whole months since the war started in February of this year, Macron is beginning to see that he has been outplayed by the incumbent buffoon in the White House. Yes, \u2018Where Am I going Biden\u2019 is actually not as dumb as he looks or acts. The true winner of the Ukraine war is America by far which has made Europe dependent on its LPG, while it is Europeans who are reduced to living like refugees in their own countries once the cost is passed on. &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>But worse than simply being the slave in the relationship which prospers his master, the French president is also narked about new tax breaks which are being given to industries in the U.S. which linked to green jobs, rather awkwardly an acronym of an Irish paramilitary organisation, the IRA.<\/p>\n<p>Biden\u2019s \u2018inflation Reduction Act\u2019, is at first glance quite smart. But it will hit European companies even harder, leading many to question firstly whether it is anti-competitive under WTO rules and secondly whether Biden is hoping the new initiative will drive EU companies to relocate to the U.S. and create even more jobs for Uncle Sam.<\/p>\n<p>Or IRA \u2013 new legislation designed to grow green jobs in the U.S. with tax credits for electric cars and clean energy manufacturing in North America.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe level of subsidies is now two to three times higher in the U.S. than in Europe. We are totally aligned in this conflict. We work hard. And I think if the day after the conflict the result is to have a weaker Europe because a lot of its industry will have been just killed. I do believe it\u2019s not the interest of the U.S. administration and even the U.S. society,\u201d Macron said. \u201cI think the main interest is obviously to protect your middle classes, which is a very fair one. I \u2013 I do the same for my country. And it\u2019s to be competitive vis-\u00e0-vis China. But the result of the recent decision on this momentum, I would say, is it\u2019s bad for Europe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ursula von der Leyen agrees with him and has also been vocal about taking countermeasures to give EU companies a level playing field. &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Old Europe needs a reset with the U.S. But will it be the EU who takes the initiative to do this &#8230;? <a href=\"https:\/\/strategic-culture.org\/news\/2022\/12\/06\/eu-just-woke-up-and-realised-it-was-america-bitch-reset-needed-claims-macron\/\">https:\/\/strategic-culture.org\/news\/2022\/12\/06\/eu-just-woke-up-and-realised-it-was-america-bitch-reset-needed-claims-macron\/<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So, we continue to hear complaints from and about European leaders that the USA is violating various trade rules and causing friction. Four years of President Donald Trump, who labeled the bloc a \u201cfoe\u201d and has slapped tariffs on European goods, has left Europeans with a lasting sense that U.S. support is not necessarily dependable, he says. \u201cTrump has been a kind of awakening. And I think we should stay awake,\u201d Borrell says. \u201cWe cannot say \u2018oh Trump is no longer there, we can go back to our previous state of mind.\u2019\u201d<a href=\"#_edn1\" name=\"_ednref1\">[i]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Notice also the following:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>Europe Won\u2019t Get Any Relief on Trade From Biden<\/strong> &#8230; a President Biden would do as little as possible on trade. But the world will not stand still. \u2026 Europe would be \u2026 challenging.<a href=\"#_edn2\" name=\"_ednref2\">[ii]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now, we would expect trade negotiations with Europe to continue and some type of agreements will happen.\u00a0 In the spirit of accommodation and personal interest, many of the \u201cstandards\u201d of the European Union will be adopted by the U.S.A., as well as by nearly all of the countries of the world.\u00a0 The Arab nations will most likely agree with many of the standards as they seem to be destined to form a brief end-time alliance with the Europeans.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, misunderstandings and differences of opinion will occur.<\/p>\n<p>Trade wars and\/or serious trade disputes will most likely arise.<\/p>\n<p>It is likely that trade issues will be a factor in Europe ultimately turning against the U.S.A.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#_ednref1\" name=\"_edn1\">[i]<\/a> Walt V. &#8216;Trump Has Been a Kind of Awakening.&#8217; E.U&#8217;s Top Diplomat Says Europe&#8217;s Relationship With U.S. Is Forever Changed.
