D\u00dcSSELDORF<\/span> (own report) – Ahead of this year\u2019s annual general meeting, on 14 May, the Rheinmetall military technology group announced its intention to become a \u201cglobal player\u201d in the arms industry. Its ambitious plans are rooted in a rapid increase in the demand for weapons and ammunition triggered by the war in Ukraine. The upward spiral in military spending has seen the sales and profits of the D\u00fcsseldorf-headquartered arms manufacturer skyrocket. Its weapons and ammunition division was able to boost turnover to 5.69 billion euros last year, generating a profit of 828 million euros \u2013 a significant increase on the 2021 figure (491 million euros). With a backlog of orders-in-hand that could reach 60 billion euros by the end of this year, the business appears to be very secure for years to come. A part of the upcoming orders is attributable the German government\u2019s 100 billion euro \u201cspecial fund\u201d to upgrade the Bundeswehr. For around a third of this military expenditure is likely to flow into Rheinmetall. Group CEO Armin Papperger has wider ambitions for Europe-wide mergers. He is now advocating the creation of \u201ca European systems house\u201d capable of generating annual sales of 30 to 35 billion euros. China has started two days of military exercises around Taiwan, with its military calling them “strong punishment” for the self-ruled island’s “separatist acts”.<\/p>\n

The drills come three days after the inauguration of President William Lai, who called on China to stop threatening the island and accept the existence of its democracy.<\/p>\n

China sees Taiwan as a breakaway province that will eventually be under Beijing’s control, but the island sees itself as distinct.<\/p>\n

Taiwan’s defence ministry condemned the Chinese drills as “irrational provocations”.<\/p>\n

Taipei dispatched naval, air, and ground forces to “defend the [island’s] sovereignty”, its defence ministry said. https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cqvv29gpqn1o<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Those who pay attention to the European election posters in Germany can see that external threat is a reliable campaign tactic. Grim-faced candidates with words like “security” and “strength” alongside them appear to be on every street corner.<\/p>\n

German politicians have been preparing people for dangerous times since Russia’s attack on Ukraine in February 2022 …<\/p>\n

Frank Sauer, a professor of international politics and security at the Bundeswehr University in Munich, believes that even with the \u20ac100 billion injection, the Bundeswehr is still underfunded. …<\/p>\n

What if Trump wins?<\/h3>\n

Sauer does not yet see any acute threat to a NATO member state, but he thinks a scenario in which Donald Trump wins the upcoming US presidential election could make things more precarious. In his current election campaign, the former president has several times said that Europeans who have not paid their “bill” for defense will no longer be protected. …<\/p>\n

“Putin is approaching 80,” said Sauer, extending the hypothetical scenario, “and he now wants to complete his life’s work and establish a greater Russia. Perhaps he will decide to test whether that’s possible, after all, and invade one or more of the Baltic states. And the US would say: ‘That’s not our problem. You don’t pay your bills anyway, and we’re also busy with China.'” The security expert believes that might not necessarily happen in the next five years, but it could. …<\/p>\n

“We are living in an era of massive historical upheaval,” said Sauer, but he added that that is not yet registering with the German population: “It takes a while for our minds to change. In November 2018, French President Macron called for a \u201ctrue European army\u201d because of China, Russia, and the USA. Some others in Europe have echoed that sentiment. On November 9, 2018, US President Donald Trump called that an insult, but the next day said that the USA wanted \u201ca very strong Europe.\u201d Emmanuel Macron referred to Donald Trump as \u201cmy friend\u201d and indicated a desire to strengthen Europe\u2019s military spending. In December 2017, 25 European nations agreed to be part of a military alliance called PESCO. Europe also has NATO and IEI. Will Europe end up with \u201ca great army\u201d? Has Donald Trump\u2019s announcement to withdraw from the 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty gotten some to say that Europe must rebel against the USA? Is the idea of a United States of Europe and a European army a \u201cparanoid fantasy\u201d or a biblical reality? Will the USA regret Europe becoming a stronger military power? We are starting to see a Europe working on its military (see With PESCO, EU entering a \u2018New Era\u2019: An era that will NOT end well for the USA, Canada, or the UK<\/a>). Europe already really has a lot of nuclear weapons that it could use to do this or something similar (it has access to USA ones that are stored there). And more and more in Europe are publicly speaking out for their desire that Europe be a major military power.<\/p>\n

That is what President Macron wants. That is what many in Europe want.<\/p>\n

Leaders in Europe have used, and will use, the threat of a Donald Trump presidency, and not just Russia, to push a military agenda.<\/p>\n

Regarding Donald Trump, in December 2015, former German Defense Minister Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg called Donald Trump “that blonde lunatic named Donald” (Guttenberg KT. Wish List or Reality? Digital Trends in 2016 | Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg | hub conference. https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=dgdZUA96UBU. Posted December 11, 2015).<\/p>\n

In 2017, Herr Guttenberg urged Germany to do more because of the rise of Donald Trump:<\/p>\n

Former Defense Minister Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg has called on Germany to become more self-assertive with Donald Trump, a president who he believes may well bring about an era of \u201cerratic\u201d politics. \u2026<\/p>\n

Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg<\/a> was interviewed on Fox Business Network\u2019s Mornings with Maria<\/em> in May 2017, about Donald Trump\u2019s plans to pull out of the Paris climate agreement, he stated:<\/p>\n

I think this will weaken the US\u2019s position on the international stage. I think the reaction will be harsh on the other side of the Atlantic. And I fear that might zero into further tensions into other topics. http:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-au\/news\/australia\/exiting-paris-agreement-will-weaken-us-kt-zu-guttenberg\/vp-BBBJzIO<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Many in Europe agree with Herr Guttenberg\u2019s assessment of Donald Trump.<\/p>\n

In 2019, Herr Guttenberg told CNBC<\/em> some of his views of Donald Trump and Germany:<\/p>\n

Trump has repeatedly called on NATO allies like Germany to increase contributions toward defense, often criticizing them for not complying with a commitment to spend 2% of their gross domestic product (GDP)<\/a>. But Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg, the former German defense minister, doubted whether Germany would ever reach that target.<\/p>\n

\u201cWill Donald Trump ever be happy? Probably not, even if they come to these numbers, which I think is more or less impossible, he will just find the next thing to throw at Germany, or not even at Germany, whomever pleases him at that very moment,\u201d he told CNBC\u2019s Geoff Cutmore in Salzburg, Austria.<\/p>\n

The relationship between the United States and Germany has been somewhat tense since Trump took over at the White House, especially in areas such as trade and foreign relations …<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is rather dangerous,\u201d zu Guttenberg told CNBC about the situation. \u201cI don\u2019t expect anyone stepping deliberately into a war. I talk to many stakeholders in the U.S. political spectrum and everyone says even Donald Trump \u2014 who is always good for a surprise at that\u2019s the mildest phrase I can find for his political acting \u2014 doesn\u2019t have an interest at all to ruin his re-election chances for next year by waging a war against Iran. On the other hand, talking to stakeholders from the region over there, they are afraid, and they say we have never been as close to war as right now,\u201d zu Guttenberg, who also served as German economy minister, said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are now at a threshold, if we have an accident, just an accident, it could ignite (tensions) even more right away and the one thing that worries me the most (is) we have never been as disunited in the so-called Western part of the group of six,\u201d he added. https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2019\/07\/26\/ex-german-defense-chief-questions-calls-for-increased-nato-spend.html<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

So, Baron Guttenberg has concluded that it is impossible to please Donald Trump and that he will always be against Germany.<\/p>\n

Since Herr Guttenberg is pro-Germany, his conclusion will influence his attitude towards the USA.<\/p>\n

This past November, he was asked about the ‘Trump effect’ again:<\/p>\n

Is Donald Trump a threat to world peace if he is reelected?\u201d German talk show host Sandra Maischberger asked former Defense Minister Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg on November 14. …<\/p>\n

Guttenberg\u2019s main concern appears to be a Trump comeback, stating:<\/p>\n

It wouldn\u2019t be a pleasure for us, because he is not a friend of the trans-Atlantic alliance. He is not a friend of the Germans; we saw that already. The chances are relatively high, because many Americans have their fist in their pocket, including Republicans, and say this is likely the greatest scumbag that we ever had in U.S. politics, that\u2019s how it was told me personally. But he has done one thing: He delivered. He was one of the few that has implemented his, yes crude and crazy, promises. If someone likes it or not.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This is one of many warnings that Guttenberg has uttered about Trump since he ran for the presidency in 2016. Following Trump\u2019s election victory, Guttenberg told Bild:<\/em> \u201cThis is a result that shakes up the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

On multiple occasions, Guttenberg has called on Europe to become independent of the U.S. because of Trump. In 2019, he told Gerzo Media, \u201cLet\u2019s finally get to terms with things we should have done by ourselves already for decades.
