Halloween is often viewed as a modern US invention. In fact, it dates back more than 2,000 years, to Ireland<\/a> and an ancient Celtic fire festival called Samhain<\/a>. The exact origins of Samhain predate written records but according to the Horniman Museum<\/a>: “There are Neolithic tombs in Ireland that are aligned with the Sun on the mornings of Samhain and Imbolc [in February], suggesting these dates have been important for thousands of years”.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Celebrated usually from 31 October to 1 November, the religious rituals of Samhain (pronounced “sow-win”, meaning summer’s end), focused on fire, as winter approached. …<\/p>\n

Samhain was the pivotal point of the Celtic Pagan new year, a time of rebirth \u2013 and death. “Pagans had three harvests: Lammas, harvest of the corn, on 1 August; the one of fruit and vegetables at autumn equinox, 21 September; and Halloween, the third,” says Baylis. At this time animals that couldn’t survive winter were culled, to ensure the other animals’ survival. “So there was a lot of death around that time, and people knew there would be deaths in their villages during the harsh winter months.” Other countries, notably Mexico, celebrate The Day of the Dead<\/a> around this time to honour the deceased. …<\/p>\n

It was believed that at this time the veil between this world and the spirit world was at its thinnest \u2013 allowing the spirits of the dead to pass through and mingle with the living. The sacred energy of the rituals, it was believed, allowed the living and the dead to communicate, and gave Druid priests and Celtic shamans heightened perception.<\/p>\n

And this is where the dress-up factor came in \u2013 costumes and ugly masks were worn to scare away malevolent spirits believed to have been set free from the realm of the dead. This was also known as “mumming” or “guising”.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Those early Samhain dressing-up rituals began to change when Pope Gregory 1 (590-604) arrived in Britain from Rome to convert Pagan Anglo-Saxons to Christianity. The Gregorian mission<\/a> decreed that Samhain festivities must incorporate Christian saints “to ward off the sprites and evil creatures of the night”, says Baylis. All Souls Day, 1 November, was created by the Church, “so people could still call on their dead to aid them”; also known as All Hallows, 31 October later became All Hallows’ Eve, later known as Halloween. …<\/p>\n

Echoes of Samhain also live on today in fire practices. Carving lanterns from root vegetables was one tradition, although turnips, not pumpkins, were first used. The practice is said to have grown from a Celtic myth, about a man named Jack who made a pact with the devil, but who was so deceitful that he was banned from heaven and hell \u2013 and condemned to roam the darkness, with only a burning coal in a carved-out turnip to light the way.<\/p>\n

In Ireland, people made lanterns, placing turnips with carved faces in their window to ward off an apparition called “Jack of the Lantern” or Jack-o’-Lantern. In the 19th Century, Irish immigrants took the custom with them to the US. …<\/p>\n

Leaving food and sweetly spiced “soul cakes” or “soulmass” cakes on the doorstep was said to ward off bad spirits. Households deemed less generous with their offerings would receive a “trick” played on them by bad spirits. Yet, several years ago, actor Kirk Cameron put out a film called Saving Christmas<\/em>. As it turns out, it was reported to be a box office flop (see Kirk Cameron\u2019s Christmas movie flops<\/a>).<\/p>\n

The reason to bring that up is that while promoting his movie, he made several comments intended to encourage people to celebrate Halloween.<\/p>\n

In light of his new film \u201cSaving Christmas,\u201d Kirk Cameron is also speaking out on Halloween celebrations, urging Christians to get into the spooky spirit this year.<\/p>\n

\u201cKirk Cameron\u2019s Saving Christmas\u201d hits select theaters on Nov. 14,\u2026 Cameron addressed the same theories as they are applied to Halloween, clarifying why Christians \u201cshould have the biggest Halloween party on your block.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe real origins have a lot to do with All Saints Day and All Hallows Eve,\u201d the actor told The Christian Post. \u201cIf you go back to old church calendars, especially Catholic calendars, they recognize the holiday All Saints Day, with All Hallows Eve the day before, when they would remember the dead. That\u2019s all tied in to Halloween.\u201d<\/p>\n

Moreover, the \u201cUnstoppable\u201d star went on to cite the meaning behind dressing up in frightening costumes on Halloween, clarifying the meaning of Oct. 31.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you go out on Halloween and see all people dressed in costumes and see someone in a great big bobble head Obama costume with great big ears and an Obama face, are they honoring him or poking fun?\u201d Cameron asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey are poking fun at him,\u201d the actor said, answering his own question before comparing the concept of costumes to early Christianity.<\/p>\n

\u201cEarly on, Christians would dress up in costumes as the devil, ghosts, goblins and witches precisely to make the point that those things were defeated and overthrown by the resurrected Jesus Christ,\u201d Cameron continued. \u201cThe costumes poke fun at the fact that the devil and other evils were publicly humiliated by Christ at His resurrection. That\u2019s what the Scriptures say, that He publicly humiliated the devil when He triumphed over power and principality and put them under his feet. Over time you get some pagans who want to go this is our day, high holy day of Satanic church, that this is all about death, but Christians have always known since the first century that death was defeated, that the grave was overwhelmed, that ghosts, goblins, devils are foolish has-beens who used to be in power but not anymore. Everything in this quote shows extreme diarrhea of the mouth. Christians right up until the modern day have been afraid of devils, goblins, and ghosts, and that fear often manifested on Halloween. Despite Kirk Cameron\u2019s claims, the Bible condemns pagan celebrations and early Christians did NOT dress up as witches and devils. The Bible teaches:<\/p>\n

10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.<\/p>\n

The Bible does not teach to put on costumes of witches or other things associated with darkness. Early Christians did NOT dress up as witches. True Christians rely on the word of God.<\/p>\n

The Bible condemns pagan celebrations and early Christians did NOT dress up as witches and devils. Jesus was not even born on December 25th (see also How did December 25th become Christmas?<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Notice something that Jesus taught:<\/p>\n

23 But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. 24 God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth. (John 4:23-24)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Kirk Cameron not only overlooks this, he seems to be pushing a more \u2018ecumenical\u2019 and anti-biblical view of what he calls Christianity. This is wrong, and will NOT end well (cf. Revelation 18).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Should Christians celebrate Halloween? It became an official holiday in the 9th century after a pronouncement by the Roman Catholic Pope Gregory IV. Protestants such Joy Wendling, Kirk Cameron, Hailey Bieber, and Alan Rudnick think Christians should keep it. But other Protestants have issues with that. What about the Church of God, which is not Protestant nor Roman Catholic? What about Martin Luther, the Apostle Jude, the original faith, and licentiousness? Does Halloween have its origins in a pagan Druid holiday which has many of the same features as modern Halloween celebrations? What do Satanists and those who practice Wicca (witchcraft) think of Halloween? Is Halloween the right time to be a Christian witness? What about lewd Halloween costumes? Did a Roman Catholic write, \u201cCatholic feasts are in continuity and fulfill the meaning of the pagan ones\u201d? What did the Apostle Paul say about combining biblical and demonic practices? Some Protestants and many Roman Catholics will not only observe Halloween, they will observe All Saints’ Day on November 1st, with some Mexicans celebrating the ‘Day of the Dead’ until November 2nd.<\/p>\n
