However, I would argue that more research is needed to better understand impacts of chronic low level fluoride exposure on adult health outcomes because that research is scarce,\u201d Malin said. &#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm325yvlj00493b5v58vnxoxq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\" data-analytics-observe=\"off\">The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends community water fluoridation as a cost-effective way to improve Americans\u2019 oral health.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm325yvlj004a3b5vh4bvc0io@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\" data-analytics-observe=\"off\">Exposure to fluoride above the public health recommended amount over many years can result in <a href=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/factsheets\/Fluoride-HealthProfessional\/#en57\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">skeletal fluorosis,<\/a> a condition that is rare in the US and that causes weaker bones and joint pain. Too much fluoride can also lead to dental fluorosis, which is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/oral-health\/about\/about-dental-fluorosis.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cosmetic<\/a> and can lead to the outer enamel layer of the tooth to have white specks or lines. &#8230;<\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm325yvlj004a3b5vh4bvc0io@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\" data-analytics-observe=\"off\">The mineral can help prevent tooth decay by strengthening the protective outer layer of enamel that can be worn away by acids formed by bacteria, plaque and sugars in the mouth. Adding fluoride to public water systems <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/10\/03\/health\/fluoride-drinking-water-tooth-decay-risk-benefit\/index.html\">first started<\/a> in the United States in 1945. &#8230;<\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm325yvlj004a3b5vh4bvc0io@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\" data-analytics-observe=\"off\">Recent reports suggest the benefits of adding fluoride to water supplies may not be as significant as they once were, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/11\/03\/health\/rfk-jr-fluoride-science\/index.html\">https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/11\/03\/health\/rfk-jr-fluoride-science\/index.html<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Here is a report from the UK:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">4 November 2024<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Donald Trump would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2024\/nov\/03\/rfk-jr-trump-remove-fluoride-drinking-water\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">push to remove fluoride from drinking water<\/a> on his first day in office if elected, former independent candidate Robert F Kennedy Jr declared on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Kennedy, a prominent proponent of debunked public health claims whom Trump has promised will \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2024\/nov\/01\/trump-tells-tucker-carlson-that-musk-and-rfk-jr-could-be-influential-figures-if-he-wins\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">take care of health<\/a>\u201d in his administration, made the declaration on X, claiming that fluoride was \u201can industrial waste\u201d linked to a variety of health conditions. &#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">As with any chemical compound, ingestion of fluoride at high levels can have adverse effects, such as skeletal fluorosis, a condition in which fluoride is incorporated into the bones, and dental fluorosis. These only occur with chronic exposure to fluoride at far higher levels than the safe drinking limits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">\u201cEverything is a poison at high enough levels \u2013 even water,\u201d Jones said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">In August, the US\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/article\/2024\/aug\/23\/fluoride-water-study\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">National Toxicology Program<\/a> released a review suggesting a link between fluoride exposure above 1.5mg of fluoride per litre of water and lower IQ in children. &#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Germany stopped fluoridating its water in the 1970s and never reintroduced it, but since 1991 has <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/16156167\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">sold salt with added fluoride<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2024\/nov\/04\/fluoride-explainer-what-is-us-election-donald-trump-robert-f-kennedy-jr#:~:text=Fluoride%20is%20a%20mineral%20found,strengthens%20teeth%20and%20prevents%20cavities.\">https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2024\/nov\/04\/fluoride-explainer-what-is-us-election-donald-trump-robert-f-kennedy-jr#:~:text=Fluoride%20is%20a%20mineral%20found,strengthens%20teeth%20and%20prevents%20cavities.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><em>Medical News Today<\/em> has the following about fluoride:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div>\n<h3>Thyroid problems<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>In some cases, excess fluoride can damage the parathyroid gland. This can result in hyperparathyroidism, which involves uncontrolled secretion of parathyroid hormones.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>This can result in a depletion of <a class=\"content-link css-185ckoq keywords\" title=\"Why is calcium good, and which foods contain it?\" href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/articles\/248958.php\">calcium<\/a> in bone structures and higher-than-normal concentrations of calcium in the blood.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Lower calcium concentrations in bones make them more susceptible to fractures.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<h3>Neurological problems<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>In 2017, a report was published suggesting that exposure to fluoride before birth <a class=\"content-link css-185ckoq\" href=\"https:\/\/ehp.niehs.nih.gov\/ehp655\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">could lead to<span class=\"css-16y17d3 icon-hl-trusted-source-after\"><span class=\"sro\">Trusted Source<\/span><\/span><\/a> poorer cognitive outcomes in the future.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The researchers measured fluoride levels in 299 women during pregnancy and in their children between the ages of 6 and 12 years. They tested cognitive ability at the ages of 4 years and between 6 and 12 years. And while that might help some, I told him that this was not needed for my children. He strongly disagreed. He is now dead, so the fact that my nearly forty year old son never had any cavities would not impress him.
