However, the world\u2019s fourth most populous nation opted to formally join the bloc only after the formation of its newly elected government last year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Brazilian government welcomes Indonesia\u2019s entry into the BRICS,\u201d the government said in a statement. \u201cWith the largest population and economy in Southeast Asia, Indonesia shares with other members a commitment to reforming global governance institutions and contributes positively to deepening South-South cooperation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Indonesia\u2019s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement Tuesday said that it reflects Indonesia\u2019s increasingly active role in global issues, and its commitment to strengthening multilateral cooperation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIndonesia views its membership in BRICS as a strategic step to increase collaboration and cooperation with other developing countries, based on the principles of equality, mutual respect, and sustainable development,\u201d said the statement. &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Last year, the alliance expanded to embrace Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates. &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/turkey-brics-member-russia-cc8c286853c0af2ebc6379954357cd3e\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\">Turkey<\/a><\/span>, Azerbaijan and Malaysia have formally applied to become members and <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/pakistan-russia-brics-islamabad-bid-2f996195fc650b31243e9d7d91779259\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\">a few others<\/a><\/span> have expressed interest. <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/brazil-brics-indonesia-membership-c05b0c8e2ae493f9046479e62a45d8fa\">https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/brazil-brics-indonesia-membership-c05b0c8e2ae493f9046479e62a45d8fa<\/a><\/p>\n<p>7 January 2025<\/p>\n<p>BRICS is increasingly viewed as a counterweight to the West, with the \u201cde-dollarisation\u201d of international trade a key goal. Many members accuse Washington of using the greenback as a political tool, and the group has proposed a common currency.<\/p>\n<p>US President-elect Donald Trump has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/program\/counting-the-cost\/2024\/12\/4\/would-trump-impose-100-percent-tariffs-on-brics-nations\">threatened<\/a> 100 percent tariffs on BRICS nations if they replace the dollar in international trade.<\/p>\n<p>However, Brazil has indicated that it aims to boost the effort during its presidency of BRICS. Its share has been zigzagging lower for many years as central banks have been diversifying their holdings to assets denominated in currencies other than the dollar. And they\u2019ve also been diversifying into gold. But the dollar remains by far the dominant global reserve currency.<\/p>\n<p>The share of USD-denominated foreign exchange reserves fell to 57.4% of total exchange reserves the lowest since 1994, according to the IMF\u2019s COFER data for Q3 2024. USD-denominated foreign exchange reserves include US Treasury securities, US agency securities, US MBS, US corporate bonds, US stocks, and other USD-denominated assets held by central banks other than the Fed.<\/p>\n<p>In Q1 2015, the USD\u2019s share was still 66%. Over these 10 years, the dollar\u2019s share of global reserve currencies has dropped by 8.6 percentage points. If this pace of decline continues, the dollar\u2019s share will fall below 50% in less than 10 years, by the end of 2034. &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The euro\u2019s share, #2,<\/strong> ticked up to 20.0%, the highest since 2022. &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Central banks had spent decades unloading their gold holdings.
