Microsoft has a new computer chip:<\/p>\n

The artificial intelligence (AI) arms race has yet to wrap up, but big tech is already starting a new one: the quantum computing arms race. Several big tech companies have seen the raw computing power required to create these cutting-edge AI models, and it’s clear that classical computing will work, but quantum computing is starting to become feasible for similar price points.<\/p>\n

As a result, many top computing companies are announcing various breakthroughs in the quantum computing field, with Microsoft <\/strong>(MSFT<\/a> -1.51%<\/span>)<\/span> being the latest to do so. It announced its Majorana 1 quantum chip on Feb. 19, and this announcement positions Microsoft well in the quantum computing race.<\/p>\n

Microsoft’s breakthrough pushes it closer to winning the arms race<\/strong><\/p>\n

Quantum computing<\/a> is far more powerful than traditional computing because of how it stores information. Classical computing stores information as 1s or 0s, but quantum computing stores information in a superposition between 1 and 0. This allows the technology to store much more information per qubit (the basic quantum computing information units) versus a bit (classical computing information unit). https:\/\/www.fool.com\/investing\/2025\/02\/26\/microsoft-launches-its-majorana-1-quantum-computin\/<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

D-Wave Quantum Inc. (NYSE: QBTS) (\u201cD-Wave\u201d or the \u201cCompany\u201d), a leader in quantum computing systems, software, and services, and the world\u2019s first commercial supplier of quantum computers, and the J\u00fclich Supercomputing Centre (JSC) at Forschungszentrum J\u00fclich (FZJ) announced today that FZJ has purchased a D-Wave quantum computer, becoming the first high-performance computing (HPC) center in the world to own a D-Wave Advantage annealing quantum computing system.<\/p>\n

With the purchase of the world’s largest quantum computer and Europe’s first quantum computer with more than 5,000 qubits and 15-way connectivity, the J\u00fclich UNified Infrastructure for Quantum computing (JUNIQ), a public quantum computing user facility deployed by JSC, gains complete access to all aspects of the system\u2013 including the ability to modify system parameters and integrate the quantum system in new ways for new purposes. For example, this will allow it to be connected to the JUPITER exascale computer in the future, potentially enabling breakthroughs in areas such as artificial intelligence (AI) and quantum optimization. JUPITER, which is currently being built close to JUNIQ at the FZJ, is expected to surpass the threshold of one quintillion calculations per second. This will be the world\u2019s first coupling of an annealing quantum computer with an exascale supercomputer, providing a first-of-a-kind opportunity for tackling the world’s toughest computational problems.<\/p>\n

JSC’s system will be upgraded to D-Wave’s next generation Advantage2\u2122 quantum processor unit (QPU), once it becomes available. The Advantage2 system is expected to deliver significant performance gains with doubled coherence, increased connectivity and a 40 percent boost to the energy scale for advanced problem solving.<\/p>\n

Remember when crypto-currencies first came out? Why, they were the best thing since deep dish pizza. Not only would they usher in a new golden age of peace and freedom, and utterly avoid the nasty central banksters, they were entirely secure and “unhackable.”\u00a0 And, if you get in\u00a0now<\/em>, you’ll be able to make lots and lots of real money trading your electronic blips, oh, and did we mention, that there were only a certain amount of blips available, and they were on a distributed ledger which could not be hacked? …<\/p>\n

There was no mention of the fact that no cyber systems are secure, have integrity, and could be hacked. …<\/p>\n

Well, now there are two stories out there that should give everyone pause, one concerning quantum computing, and the other, a hack (stories courtesy of M.D. and E.E., with our thanks):<\/p>\n

A Quantum Computer Could Crack Bitcoin in Half, Research Finds<\/a><\/p>\n

Bitcoin, Ether Tumble As Bybit Exchange Confirms Massive $1.4 Billion Hack<\/a><\/p>\n

Now notice what these two articles, when taken together, are really saying: the first is saying, essentially, that there is a\u00a0technological<\/em> hardware-<\/em>way around crypto’s alleged and ballyhooed “unhackability”, demonstrating that the old maxim is true: “No matter how big and impregnable your fortress is, the Germans will invent a big cannon to blast their way into it.” By the same token, the second article is saying that there is a\u00a0technique and software<\/em>-way around that “unhackability”: …<\/p>\n

The 105-qubit chip \u2014 that’s double the qubit count of the tech giant’s preceding Sycamore chip \u2014 completed a computation in under five minutes that would take a modern supercomputer a “mind-boggling” 10 septillion years, the company said.<\/p>\n

The news reignited a debate surrounding the security of blockchains, the distributed ledgers that run digital currencies like Bitcoin. Could a future quantum computer break the cryptocurrency’s encryption, allowing thieves to abscond with unfathomable sums?<\/p>\n

As\u00a0Fortune<\/em>\u00a0reports<\/a>, researchers at the University of Kent found in a\u00a0yet-to-be-peer-reviewed study<\/a>\u00a0that the risk is very real. In fact, just the downtime required to update the blockchain to protect itself from an encryption-breaking quantum computer could extend to 76 days<\/em><\/strong> \u2014 and the resulting losses would likely be staggering.\u00a0 (Boldface italics emphasis added)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Microsoft boasts of having developed ‘entirely new state of matter’; will kick-start quantum computing<\/h2>\n

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced that his company has developed an \u201centirely new state of matter\u201d that will fundamentally change the computing industry.<\/p>\n

Nadella made the claim … on X<\/a><\/strong>, saying that the discovery would power a new Microsoft product making a meaningful quantum computer available \u201cnot in decades, as some have predicted, but in years.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nadella added, \u201cImagine a chip that can fit in the palm of your hand yet is capable of solving problems that even all the computers on Earth today combined could not!\u201d<\/p>\n

According to The Washington Times<\/a><\/strong>, \u201cQuantum computers are expected to solve problems exponentially faster than classical computers through the forthcoming machines\u2019 usage of the properties of entanglement, interference, and superposition to complete calculations.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nadella stated:<\/p>\n

\u201cMost of us grew up learning there are three main types of matter that matter: solid, liquid, and gas. Today, that changed. After a nearly 20-year pursuit, we\u2019ve created an entirely new state of matter, unlocked by a new class of materials, topoconductors, that enable a fundamental leap in computing.\u201d …<\/p>\n

Small Step Or Giant Leap? Assessing Google\u2019s Quantum Threat To BTC<\/h2>\n

Any major developments regarding quantum computing tend to cause a collective intake of breath among the crypto community. Google\u2019s latest announcement<\/a> launching its quantum processor, dubbed Willow, is no different. Not only does Willow feature double the number of qubits (or quantum bits, the quantum equivalent of processing capacity in traditional computers), but Google has also managed to reduce the instability usually caused by adding more qubits.<\/p>\n

Therefore, Willow offers increased computational capacity relative to the number of additional qubits compared to other quantum machines. To put this into context, Willow takes around five minutes<\/a> to execute a task that would take a standard supercomputer a trillion trillion years to process.<\/p>\n

This significant leap forward in processing power leads to questions about Bitcoin\u2019s legendary security, unbroken for 15 years since the genesis block. Bitcoin relies on cryptography, including the SHA-256 algorithm, which is secure enough to withstand any brute-force attack by traditional computers. And, now, it looks to be closer to having the supercomputer hardware to make it more of a reality.<\/p>\n

The European Union does not think it should be and it released a paper titled \u201cProposal for EU Regulation on Markets in Crypto-Assets.\u201d Christine Lagarde, president of the European Central Bank, earlier endorsed EU regulation of crypto and digital currencies. A Belgian declared that the EU was the \u201cnew Sheriff in town\u201d to deal with the \u201cwild west\u201d of Bitcoin, blockchain, and other cryptocurrencies. The European Union now also has the European Public Prosecutor\u2019s Office in operation, mainly to deal with financial matters? Will the Europeans end up controlling buying and selling associated with 666 in Revelation <\/span>13:16<\/span>-18? Is Europe taking preliminary steps to do so now?
