Is a new virus causing a disease outbreak and deaths in the Democratic Republic of Congo, or is it already known to science?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Another mystery disease outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo\u00a0<\/a> has emerged in recent weeks, resulting in at least 60 deaths, officials say.<\/p>\n

It follows a similar event in September 2024<\/a>, referred to as “Disease X” before the World Health Organization (WHO)<\/a> identified it as a cocktail of several known acute respiratory illnesses complicated by malaria and malnutrition.<\/p>\n

These new outbreaks could have similar origins, but it will likely take time to determine exactly what the cause is.<\/p>\n

What is the current situation in the DR Congo?<\/h3>\n

More than 1,000 cases have been reported across the DR Congo’s Equateur province and 141 cases of a disease<\/a> have been reported in Basankusu’s health zone. A separate outbreak in early February consisted of 158 cases and 58 deaths. …<\/p>\n

Health authorities in the\u00a0DR Congo\u00a0and WHO experts are carrying out investigations to determine the cause of the illness and deaths.<\/p>\n

Early lab tests ruled out Ebola<\/a> and Marburg disease<\/a>. Half of those tested have tested positive for malaria<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Further testing will be undertaken for meningitis and potential toxic contamination. Influenza and typhoid have also been suggested as possible causes of disease. …<\/p>\n

The cause of the disease \u2014 and whether the illnesses in different regions are connected \u2014 remains unknown.<\/p>\n

Early reports suggested the first cases were among a group of children who may have eaten a bat, though this incident is not yet confirmed as the cause of the outbreak.<\/p>\n

Bats are known reservoirs<\/a> of viruses<\/a> and other disease-causing pathogens. Global health advice recommends people steer clear of exposure to dead animals. …<\/p>\n

What are the symptoms of the mystery disease?<\/h3>\n

The WHO’s latest memo says symptoms are broad, and include fever, headaches, chills, sweating, stiffness in the neck, muscular aches, joint and body pain, coughing, vomiting and diarrhea.<\/p>\n

The broadness of these symptoms and their potential to apply to many diseases makes it impossible to pinpoint the cause without analysis of biological samples from patients.<\/p>\n

As long time readers of this COGwriter Church of God page are aware, I have long pointed out the consumption of biblical unclean animals, such as bats, and viruses.<\/p>\n

According to the word of God, such creatures should not be eaten (see The New Testament Church, History, and Unclean Meats<\/a>).<\/p>\n

If people would stop eating biblical unclean animals, there would be less viruses that appear.<\/p>\n

Before going further, let me add that war and violence are also major problems in the Congo now as well:<\/p>\n

      Perhaps I should add that the Continuing<\/em> Church of God recently provided food aid to brethren in the Congo who have been impacted by the violence there earlier this month.<\/p>\n

      Notice the following from the Old Testament:<\/p>\n

      27 Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due,
      \nWhen it is in the power of your hand to do so.
      \n28 Do not say to your neighbor,
      \n\u201cGo, and come back,
      \nAnd tomorrow I will give it,\u201d
      \nWhen you have it with you. (Proverbs 3:27-28)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

      We are to do good as soon as we can, to the extent that we can.<\/p>\n

      Many Christians have given up on places like Africa and Haiti.<\/p>\n

      Some do not seem to take seriously enough something that the Apostle Paul<\/a> wrote:<\/p>\n

      9 And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart. 10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith. (Galatians 6:9-10)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

      Similarly, the Apostle James wrote:<\/p>\n

      14 What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, \u201cDepart in peace, be warmed and filled,\u201d but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? 17 Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. (James 2:14-17)<\/p>\n

      22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. (James 1:22)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

      While we in CCOG cannot solve all the hunger in the world, we take scriptures seriously, including the following:<\/p>\n

      5 \u201cHe who has a slack hand becomes poor, But the hand of the diligent makes rich. He who gathers in the summer is a wise son; He who sleeps in harvest is a son of shame\u201d (Proverbs 10:5).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

      We in the CCOG realize that famines are prophesied. We have been taking steps to increase food production where we can as well as providing food for hungry brethren.<\/p>\n

      That said, late last year, something called ‘Disease X’ was causing concern in the Congo:<\/p>\n

      More cases of a mysterious flu-like illness labelled \u201cDisease X\u201d were reported in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and the World Health Organization has dispatched a rapid response team to help investigate. …<\/p>\n

      While more than half of the cases involve children under 5, a 50-year-old man hospitalised in Lucca, Italy, is suspected to have recovered from the disease after a business trip to Congo, Il Tempo reported. …<\/p>\n

      Acute pneumonia, influenza, Covid-19, measles and malaria are considered as potential causal factors based on the signs and symptoms of those afflicted, the WHO said, adding that response teams are helping to treat patients and raise awareness of the outbreak within affected communities.<\/p>\n

      Malaria is common in the area, and it may be causing or contributing to the cases, the United Nations health agency said. \u201cLaboratory tests are under way to determine the exact cause. At this stage, it is also possible that more than one disease is contributing to the cases and deaths.\u201d<\/p>\n
