Canada’s new Prime Minister met with France’s President Macron, the UK’s Keir Starmer, and King Charles III:<\/p>\n

David Lammy thought he was reassuring Canadians<\/a>. During his visit to Canada \u2013 for a meeting of G7 foreign ministers\u2013 he was asked about Donald Trump\u2019s claims that the country should become the 51st state<\/a> of the US. The UK foreign secretary stressed that Canada is a \u201cproud [and] sovereign nation\u201d, and \u2013 in his view \u2013 would remain so. When pressed further, he invoked Canada\u2019s shared history and monarch with the UK, and our work together during the second world war.<\/p>\n

Canadians are already well aware of that shared history, and how Britain has long benefited from its Commonwealth. …<\/p>\n

King Charles retains a role. Constitutionally, he remains head of state<\/a>. …<\/p>\n

Canada\u2019s new prime minister, Mark Carney, who visited the UK on Monday, has underscored that Canadians aren\u2019t necessarily looking for our allies to \u201csay nice things\u201d about us. As \u201cmasters in our own house\u201d, he said on the day he was sworn in<\/a>, we must take our own steps to ensure our survival. LONDON (AP) \u2014 Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney<\/a><\/span> met the leaders of Britain and France on Monday during his first official overseas trip, seeking support from two of Ottawa\u2019s oldest allies as U.S. President Donald Trump targets Canada\u2019s sovereignty and economy.<\/p>\n

Canadians have criticized the leaders of the two countries that founded Canada for their muted response to Trump\u2019s attacks. The president has imposed tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum<\/a><\/span> and repeatedly commented on turning Canada into the 51st state<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n

Carney and French President Emmanuel Macron did not take journalists\u2019 questions, and a joint news conference was not scheduled with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, either. …<\/p>\n

Starmer has called Canada a friend and ally of the U.K. but has declined to directly call out Trump\u2019s talk of annexation \u2014 though he went further than he has before by stressing Canada\u2019s sovereignty.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe relationship between our two countries has always been strong,\u201d Starmer told Carney inside the British leader\u2019s 10 Downing St. residence. \u201cTwo sovereign allies, so much in common \u2014 a shared history, shared values, shared king.\u201d …<\/p>\n

Macron did not address Trump\u2019s attacks on Canada ahead of their talks but noted that tariffs only bring inflation and damage to supply chains.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the current international context, we want to be able to develop our most strategic projects with our closest, more loyal partners,\u201d Macron said.<\/p>\n

In London, Carney was received at Buckingham Palace by King Charles III, Canada\u2019s head of state, before his talks with Starmer. The monarch, wearing a red tie and an Order of Canada lapel pin, congratulated Carney on his recent victory. He was sworn in on Friday.<\/p>\n

\u201cCanada is fortunate to have a steadfast defender in our sovereign,\u201d Carney posted on X. …<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to ensure that France, and the whole of Europe, works enthusiastically with Canada, the most European of non-European countries,\u201d Carney said, but vowed to \u201cmaintain the most positive relations possible with the United States.\u201d …<\/p>\n

Carney said he won\u2019t sit down with Trump until the U.S. is ready to have a more comprehensive discussion on trade and security. \u201cWhen the U.S. is ready to have that conversation we\u2019re ready to sit down,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The prime minister also said Canada is not trying to organize a coordinated retaliation response among countries. He also said there is a limit to what Canada is prepared to do in retaliation given that the U.S. economy is 10 times the size of Canada\u2019s.<\/p>\n

Carney also noted the United States, France, the U.K. and Canada and other countries are members of NATO and it would be \u201cunthinkable\u201d for the U.S. to annex Canada through military means. …<\/p>\n

His government is also reviewing the purchase of U.S.-made F-35<\/a><\/span> fighter jets in light of Trump\u2019s trade war. Carney said the potential for having more production in Canada is a factor.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Macron has been increasing efforts to persuade France\u2019s allies to move away from purchases of American military hardware. Canada is in a precarious position these days and Donald Trump seems willing to try to cause Canada a lot of economic pain to get it to accede to his demands. Canada’s economy is highly dependent upon the USA’s economy, not the other way around.<\/p>\n

That said, one of the unintended consequences of Donald Trump’s statements and policies has been to get allies to question purchasing weaponry from the United States.<\/p>\n

As reported here earlier, even Germany’s Volkswagen has stated that it would be open to producing weaponry again, which it did in WWII (see\u00a0Germans want Europe to replace America as global leader<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Today, Germany voted to spend a lot on military matters:<\/p>\n

German lawmakers have voted to allow a huge increase in defence and infrastructure spending – a seismic shift for the country that could reshape European defence.<\/p>\n

A two-thirds majority of Bundestag parliamentarians, required for the change, approved the vote on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

The law will exempt spending on defence and security from Germany’s strict debt rules, and create a \u20ac500bn ($547bn; \u00a3420bn) infrastructure fund.<\/p>\n

This vote is a historic move for traditionally debt-shy Germany …<\/p>\n

However, state government representatives in the upper house, the Bundesrat, still need to approve the moves – also by a two-thirds majority – before they officially become law. That vote is set for Friday. …<\/p>\n

Friedrich Merz, the man behind these plans and who is expected to soon be confirmed as Germany’s new chancellor, told the lower house during Tuesday’s debate that the country had “felt a false sense of security” for the past decade.<\/p>\n

“The decision we are taking today… can be nothing less than the first major step towards a new European defence community,” he said, adding that it includes countries that are “not members of the European Union”.<\/p>\n

EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called the vote “excellent news”.<\/p>\n

Speaking at a press conference with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, she said the vote “sends a very clear message to Europe that Germany is determined to invest massively in defence”.<\/p>\n

Frederiksen meanwhile called it “fantastic news for all Europeans”. …<\/p>\n
