US Vice President JD Vance visited the US base on Greenland yesterday and made some comments. Comments that the Danish government did not like:<\/p>\n

Denmark has hit back against JD Vance\u2019s comments that Copenhagen has not done enough for Greenland<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The US vice-president made his remark on Friday during a trip to the Pituffik space base in north-western Greenland, viewed by both Copenhagen and Nuuk as a provocation.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur message to Denmark<\/a> is very simple: you have not done a good job by the people of Greenland,\u201d Vance told a press conference.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have underinvested in the people of Greenland and you have underinvested in the security architecture of this incredible, beautiful landmass.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Danish foreign minister, Lars L\u00f8kke Rasmussen, said on X on Saturday: \u201cWe are open to criticisms, but let me be completely honest, we do not appreciate the tone in which it\u2019s being delivered.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is not how you speak to your close allies, and I still consider Denmark and the United States to be close allies.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump argues that the US needs the vast Arctic<\/a> island for national and international security and has refused to rule out the use of force to secure it.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think Greenland understands that the United States should own it,\u201d Vance said<\/a> in a press conference on Friday. \u201cAnd if Denmark and the EU don\u2019t understand it, we have to explain it to them. We need Greenland. Very importantly, for international security, we have to have Greenland.\u201d …<\/p>\n

Asked about the potential use of force, Vance stressed the US administration did not think that \u201cis ever going to be necessary\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe think this makes sense, and because we think the people of Greenland are rational and good, we think we\u2019re going to be able to cut a deal, Donald Trump-style, to ensure the security of this territory but also the United States of America,\u201d Vance said. …<\/p>\n

Denmark\u2019s prime minister, Mette Frederiksen, also hit back at Vance in a statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor many years, we have stood by the Americans in very difficult situations,\u201d she said, referring to Danish combat deployments alongside US troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe vice-president\u2019s reference to Denmark is not accurate.\u201d …<\/p>\n

That is essentially the lesson many US allies have taken from the events of the last few weeks, after President Donald Trump and his administration expressed unwillingness to defend European allies \u201cif they don\u2019t pay\u201d<\/a> and stopped all military aid and intelligence sharing<\/a> with war-torn Ukraine.<\/p>\n

Recent text messages<\/a> from a group chat of US senior-most national-security officials are at the center of a US national security scandal\u2014because the editor of The Atlantic <\/em>magazine was inadvertently included in the chat, which featured detailed information about US plans to attack Houthi targets in Yemen. But the vitriol toward Europe was also palpable in that chat, showing European leaders<\/a> how the Trump administration talks about them behind closed doors:<\/p>\n

\u201cI just hate bailing Europe out again,\u201d Vice President J.D. Vance wrote.<\/p>\n

\u201cI fully share your loathing of European free-loading. It\u2019s pathetic,\u201d Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth responded.<\/p>\n

Trump officials\u2019 belligerent rhetoric and flippant actions against long-time US allies and partners stand in stark contrast with a major US rapprochement with Moscow<\/a> that has severely undermined Western efforts to isolate Russia on the world stage since it invaded Ukraine in 2022. …<\/p>\n

US allies and enemies alike increasingly think the United States will flake on its security obligations to its NATO allies. This should worry not only European leaders but US officials, too. …<\/p>\n

European capitals may ultimately take Trump\u2019s message seriously, deciding that the United States is not to be trusted as an ally. This could push US allies to exclude the United States from major defense planning, exercises, and acquisitions and turn toward US competitors for reassurance. …<\/p>\n

Widespread perceptions that the United States might not defend its allies could have disastrous effects. …<\/p>\n

In the United States and Poland\u2014traditionally the key US East European ally\u2014only half of the population now believes that the United States would come to defend a NATO ally if attacked. Should Europe Still Consider Itself a US Ally?<\/a><\/h3>\n

The United States has paused aid to Ukraine. Europe is nervous and wonders if the United States\u2019 commitment to European security is unclear. Some leaders in Europe \u201cagree they must strengthen their defense capabilities\u201d. Europe is dedicating huge amounts of money to weapons. And Europe\u2019s military technology is advancing. Revelation 13 tell us of a militaristic \u201cbeast with a mortal head wound\u201d \u2013 this is Europe. The Bible asks \u2013\u201cwho can make war with the beast?\u201d Is WWIII on the horizon? That said, here is some background related to the United States’ presence in Greenland:<\/p>\n

After the German occupation of Denmark<\/a> on 9 April 1940, Henrik Kauffmann<\/a>, Danish Ambassador to the United States, made an agreement “In the name of the king” with the United States, authorizing the United States to defend the Danish colonies on Greenland from German aggression \u2013 this agreement faced Kauffmann with a charge of high treason<\/a> by the protectorate Government<\/a>. The first US-sponsored installations at Thule were established after the US Secretary of State Cordell Hull<\/a> and the defected Danish Minister to the United States Henrik Kauffmann signed The Agreement relating to the Defense of Greenland<\/i> in Washington, D.C.<\/a>, on the symbolically chosen date of 9 April 1941. The treaty, denounced by the Danish government, allowed the United States to operate military bases in Greenland “for as long as there is agreement” that the threat to North America existed. …<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In 1949, Denmark joined NATO<\/a> (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) and abandoned its attempt to remove the United States bases. By the outbreak of the Korean War<\/a> next year, the USAF embarked on a global program of base-building in which Thule (at the time) would be considered the crown jewel owing to its location across the Pole from the USSR<\/a>, as well as its merit of being the northernmost port to be reliably resupplied by ship. Thule became a key point in American nuclear retaliation strategy. Strategic Air Command<\/a> (SAC) bombers flying over the Arctic<\/a> presented less risk of early warning than using bases in the United Kingdom. Defensively, Thule could serve as a base for intercepting bomber attacks along the northeastern approaches to Canada and the US.<\/p>\n

A board of Air Force officers headed by Gordon P. Saville<\/a> made a recommendation to pursue a base at Thule in November 1950. It was subsequently supported by the Joint Chiefs of Staff<\/a> and approved by President Truman<\/a>. To replace the agreement entered into during World War II between the US and Denmark, a new agreement with respect to Greenland was ratified on 27 April 1951 (effective on 8 June 1951). At the request of NATO, the agreement became a part of the NATO defense program. The pact specified that the two nations would arrange for the use of facilities in Greenland by NATO forces in defense of the NATO area known as the Greenland Defense Area.<\/p>\n

Thule Air Base was constructed in secret under the code name Operation Blue Jay<\/a>, but the project was made public in September 1952. …<\/p>\n

Thule became an Air Force Space Command base in 1982. Today Thule is home to the 821st Air Base Group, which exercises air base support responsibilities within the Thule Defense Area. …<\/p>\n

In 2020, Thule Air Base was formally transferred to the United States Space Force<\/a>. On 6 April 2023, Thule was renamed Pituffik Space Base, reflecting its status as a Space Force base and the native name for the region. (Pituffik Space Base. Wikipedia, accessed 01\/08\/25)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

So, the US has long had a military presence in Greenland. In theory, it could probably declare that Greenland is a US territory. But that would seem to require Congressional approval as the U.S. Constitution grants Congress the power to “dispose of and make all needful Rules and Regulations respecting the Territory or other Property belonging to the United States” (Article IV, Section 3)–and not just a declaration from its president.<\/p>\n

If the US Congress did that now, Europe is not currently in a position to actually control Greenland militarily, but would likely bide its time and plan to take it back if Greenland was declared a US territory–which it would (cf. Daniel 11:39).<\/p>\n

I suspect that the Danes and Greenlanders will try to make some type of concessions to the US, while they plan to work against US interests there.<\/p>\n

The U.S.A., itself, has repeatedly shown the Europeans that it does not trust them, yet scripture suggests it sometimes will trust them too much. Europe will cooperate with the U.S.A. as long as it feels the relationship is beneficial, and then (as prophecy foretells) one day turn totally against the U.S.A.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The Bible teaches about a great power who will be destroyed by its friends, who become enemies (Lamentations 1:1-2).<\/p>\n

Many in the Trump-Vance Administration have made comments against the USA’s European allies.<\/p>\n

This will not end well for the USA (cf. Daniel 11:39; Isaiah 10:5-11).<\/p>\n

Ultimately, Greenland could end up playing a role against the US.<\/p>\n
