First developed during the Nixon administration, the idea is to convince potential adversaries that the man with his finger on the nuclear trigger has zero compunctions about pressing it \u2014 or about taking other dangerous steps that rational actors would never seriously consider. &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>But in Trump 2.0, it is increasingly apparent that the same psychology of erratic and often terrifying brinkmanship has been extended into nearly every policy arena, domestic as well as international, &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>But the most remarkable deployment of the madman theory of this administration so far has probably been the ongoing saga of trade policy, with vast implications for both international and domestic affairs. He is believed by many to be more unpredictable than Richard Nixon. China has retaliated with tariffs on U.S. goods of 84%, which took effect Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s move was seemingly an attempt to narrow what had been an unprecedented trade war between the U.S. and most of the world to a showdown between the U.S. and China.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA just cause receives support from many,\u201d Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said at a daily briefing on Thursday. \u201cThe U.S. cannot win the support of the people and will end in failure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>China has thus far focused on Europe, with a phone call between Premier Li Qiang and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen \u201csending a positive message to the outside world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChina is willing to work with the EU to jointly implement the important consensus reached by the leaders of China and the EU, strengthen communication and exchanges, and deepen China-EU trade, investment and industrial cooperation,\u201d the official Xinhua News Agency reported.<\/p>\n<p>That was followed by a video conference between Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao and EU Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security \u0160ef\u010dovi\u0107 &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Wang has also spoken with the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations, while Li, the premier, has met with business leaders. <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/china-us-tariffs-negotiations-f5acfd1ef8f3573f92e8963a8150bdfb\">https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/china-us-tariffs-negotiations-f5acfd1ef8f3573f92e8963a8150bdfb<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So, one intended consequence of Donald Trump&#8217;s actions is getting China trying to make a trade deal with the European and a variety of Gentile nations.
