Reuters<\/em> has reported about a mineral deal between the United States and Ukraine:<\/p>\n

KYIV, April 30 (Reuters) – Ukraine is ready to sign a mineral resources deal with the United States and could do so later on Wednesday, a Ukrainian government source told Reuters.<\/p>\n

First Deputy Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko was travelling to the United States to sign the agreement, the source said, declining to be named due to the sensitivity of the matter.<\/p>\n

After several false starts and timeline projections which didn’t pan out, Ukraine is imminently ready to sign the mineral resources deal with the US, Bloomberg has quoted a source close to negotiations as saying.<\/p>\n

“The draft agreement, which envisages creating a joint fund to manage Ukraine\u2019s investment projects, has been finalized and\u00a0may be signed as soon as Wednesday<\/strong>, the person said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the talks are private,” the\u00a0report says<\/a>, noting that Ukrainian Economy Minister\u00a0Yulia Svyrydenko\u00a0is en route Washington for the signing.<\/p>\n

A source in Ukrainian President Zelensky’s office has separately told the Kyiv Independent<\/em> that it will be signed by Wednesday evening. A draft document says the deal seeks to create conditions to “increase investment in mining, energy, and related technology in Ukraine.”<\/p>\n

Crucially,\u00a0 the agreement\u00a0excludes any conditions which say it is related to Ukraine’s debt for prior US military or financial assistance<\/strong>. Kiev and many of its European allies had balked at that prior controversial proposal, which had centered on Trump’s insistence that Ukraine pay back the hundreds of billions<\/strong> provided by the American taxpayer after over three years of war.<\/p>\n

Bloomberg details, “In another breakthrough, the US has agreed that only future military assistance it may provide to Ukraine following the signing of the deal would count toward its contribution to the fund, according to the document.”<\/p>\n

Ukrainian Prime Minister\u00a0Denys Shmyhal\u00a0first unveiled Sunday that the Trump administration had\u00a0dropped this requirement of paying back past debt<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Another minerals deal headline that wasn’t… not for the first time, a Ukrainian delegation’s plane may have been literally rerouted mid-air amid Wednesday reports that the Trump-backed deal was to be signed in Washington within ‘hours’. Financial Times\u00a0reports<\/a>:<\/p>\n

Ukraine\u2019s first deputy prime minister, Yulia Svyrydenko, has flown to Washington to sign the deal with US treasury secretary Scott Bessent, said three Ukrainian officials.\u00a0But problems arose as Svyrydenko\u2019s plane headed to Washington, and Bessent\u2019s team told her she should \u201cbe ready to sign all agreements, or go back home\u201d<\/strong>, said three people familiar with the matter.\u00a0<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Apparently the Zelensky government was not ready to sign onto\u00a0all\u00a0<\/em>that the Trump administration required. After some last-minute hiccups which threatened to derail it, the US and Ukraine have finally signed the much-anticipated and controversial minerals deal.<\/p>\n

“The deal will grant the US privileged access to new investment projects to develop Ukraine’s natural resources including aluminum, graphite, oil and natural gas,” the breaking Bloomberg note says. …<\/p>\n
