In the past, various ones in the Jewish and Protestant<\/a> communities have stated that US President Donald Trump is a 21st century version of ancient Cyrus the Great.<\/p>\n

In a recent interview with Arutz Sheva\u2013Israel National News<\/em><\/a>, Israel\u2019s Communications Minister Dr. Shlomo Karhi likened former U.S. President Donald Trump to a Biblical figure of monumental importance: King Cyrus of Persia.<\/p>\n

\u201cTrump is the Cyrus of our times, and even more than that,\u201d Karhi said, drawing a direct comparison between the former president and the ancient monarch who facilitated the Jewish return to Israel from Babylonian exile.<\/p>\n

Karhi elaborated on the analogy, stating that while Cyrus permitted the Jews to return to the Land of Israel, Trump went further. \u201cTrump not only allowed the Jewish people to act per their understanding, and not only provided Israel with the weapons it needed, [but] he actively participated in the subterfuge preceding the attack and in the attack itself,\u201d Karhi claimed, referencing Israel\u2019s recent military campaign, Operation Rising Lion.<\/p>\n

Karhi is religiously observant and has garnered criticism<\/a> for bringing his religious beliefs into politics. Karhi is known for his opposition to the LGBT community and has been quoted as saying that Israeli Pride parades are \u201ccontrary to nature.\u201d<\/p>\n

The comparison between Trump and Cyrus is not new in certain religious and political circles. During Trump\u2019s first term, Rabbi Tuly Weisz, head of Israel365, publicly compared him to the Persian king. In 2018, the nascent Sanhedrin and the Mikdash (Temple) Educational Center even minted a silver coin depicting Trump\u2019s image superimposed on that of Cyrus, who historically enabled the construction of the Second Temple in 538 BCE. https:\/\/israel365news.com\/409995\/israeli-minister-trump-is-the-cyrus-of-our-times-and-more\/<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Following President Trump\u2019s proclamation recognizing Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights on Monday, Prime Minister Netanyahu compared the American leader to Cyrus the Great. While Trump\u2019s words and actions deserve our appreciation, comparisons to Cyrus are premature.<\/p>\n

During the signing ceremony at the White House, Prime Minister Netanyahu established the historical significance of the Golan decision. \u201cIn the long sweep of Jewish history,\u201d declared the Prime Minister, \u201cthere have been a handful of proclamations by non-Jewish leaders on behalf of our people and our land: Cyrus the Great, the great Persian king; Lord Balfour; President Harry S. Cyrus was the Persian king who defeated the Babylonians after their destruction of the First Temple in 586 BCE. According to the Bible, one of his first acts was to reverse the damage caused by the Babylonians:<\/p>\n

In the first year of King Cyrus of Persia, when the word of Hashem spoken by Yirmiyahu was fulfilled, Hashem roused the spirit of King Cyrus of Persia to issue a proclamation throughout his realm by word of mouth and in writing as follows: \u201cThus said King Cyrus of Persia: God of Heaven has given me all the kingdoms of the earth and has charged me with building Him a house in Yerushalayim, which is in Yehuda. Anyone of you of all His people\u2014may his God be with him, and let him go up to Yerushalayim that is in Yehuda and build the House of God of Yisrael, the God that is in Yerushalayim.\u201d (Ezra 1:1-3, The Israel Bible)<\/div>\n

This proclamation, known as the \u201cEdict of Cyrus\u201d, which is repeated in 2 Chronicles (36:22-23), has been corroborated by archaeology with the discovery of the Cyrus Cylinder 140 years ago. In March 1879, an ancient clay cylinder from the 6th century BCE was found in Iraq with text affirming the Biblical account. The fascinating Cyrus Cylinder is one of the great artifacts of biblical archaeology and now rests in the British Museum.<\/p>\n

Thanks to King Cyrus, tens of thousands of Jews returned to the Land of Israel officially ending the Babylonian captivity, exactly as promised 70 years earlier by the prophet Jeremiah. …<\/p>\n

In a powerful detour from political platitudes, the Israeli prime minister waxed Biblical, comparing the American president to Persian King Cyrus.<\/p>\n

The idea that President Trump could be linked to King Cyrus, also known as Cyrus II the Great, started circulating in 2016 following comments made by Evangelical thinker Lance Wallnau on the Christian Broadcasting Network. Wallnau likened Trump to a \u201cmodern-day Cyrus,\u201d adding, \u201cwith Trump, I believe we have a Cyrus to navigate through the storm.\u201d …<\/p>\n

King Cyrus is explicitly referred to as a \u201cmessiah,\u201d or Yahweh\u2019s anointed, in Isaiah 45:1. While other figures in the Bible, such as the priests and kings of Israel, were also referred to as messiahs, Cyrus is the only foreigner to receive this designation. …<\/p>\n

The fact that King Cyrus was a pagan chosen by God to deliver His chosen people is the contextual basis of the comparison between Trump and Cyrus. Following the 45th president\u2019s announcement earlier this year that the US embassy in Israel would move<\/a> from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, the Israeli Prime Minister remarked, \u201cI want to tell you that the Jewish people have a long memory, so we remember the proclamation of the great king, Cyrus the Great, Persian king 2,500 years ago. He proclaimed that the Jewish exiles in Babylon could come back and rebuild our Temple in Jerusalem.\u201d<\/p>\n

American evangelicals have compared Trump to the Persian ruler since the Republican primaries. …<\/p>\n

And, to be sure, the idea of the rise of a pagan monarch in the First Testament paralleling the rise of a democratically elected president may seem surprising. However, there are several striking links between the Babylonians\u2019 reception to the rise of Cyrus and the American presidential campaign and election in 2016.<\/p>\n

First, in both situations, an outsider rose to the supreme political position in the state. Cyrus was a Persian and a foreigner to Babylonian politics. A career businessman and entertainer, Trump\u2019s rise involved eliminating a series of establishment Republican candidates before defeating the establishment Democratic candidate.<\/p>\n

Second, although we do not know how Jewish exiles in Babylon felt about Cyrus when he first arrived, the grassroots citizenry greeted both Trump and King Cyrus enthusiastically. …<\/p>\n

President Trump\u2019s campaign targeted evangelicals, many of whom had felt marginalized during his predecessor\u2019s eight years in office. In his two terms, Barack Obama alienated many conservative Christians when he stopped enforcing the Defense of Marriage Act, came out in support of gay marriage (and shockingly lit up the White House with rainbow colors after the Supreme Court\u2019s affirmation of marriage equality), and, through the Department of Health and Human Services mandate, compelled people opposed<\/a> to certain forms of birth control because of their faith commitments to provide it to their employees. …<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s rhetoric recalls Cyrus\u2019s promise to restore the proper worship of Marduk and to liberate the citizenry from the exploitation and abuse they had previously suffered.<\/p>\n

But although these parallels are impressive, concluding that Trump imitates Cyrus ignores key differences in their stories. For starters, Trump is not a conquering emperor. Regarding that last point, some, including some Jews, do believe that Donald Trump’s presence will at least allow for the rebuilding of a massive temple in Jerusalem. And that seems to be the piece that the Jerusalem Post<\/em> author said needed to be done for Donald Trump to truly be ‘Cyrus.’<\/p>\n

Let me add that during the first Trump Administration, the Jewish group calling itself the Sanhedrin issued a special commemorative coin (shown at the beginning of this post) to celebrate Israel’s 70th anniversary with the stated intent to raise money to support a future temple:<\/p>\n

The recent effort that created the commemorative \u201cTrump-Cyrus Coin,\u201d sporting images of President Trump and ancient Persian King Cyrus, is now minting a special edition \u201c70 Year Redemption Coin\u201d to raise funds to build Jerusalem\u2019s Third Temple as a house of prayer for all nations.<\/p>\n

The organizers, which include Israel\u2019s nascent Sanhedrin, the Mikdash (Temple) Educational Center and the United Temple Movements, have prepared the new coin to honor the 70th anniversary of the nation, which takes place this Thursday, April 19.<\/p>\n

They believe the Temple project is the only way to avert the outbreak of another Middle East war.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Temple, as a house of prayer for all nations, is the source of true peace,\u201d said Rabbi Hillel Weiss, spokesman for the nascent Sanhedrin, a biblically mandated court of 71 elders, told Breaking Israel News.<\/a> \u201cIt has been presented in the media as a \u2018flashpoint,\u2019 the focus of conflict. That is the opposite of the truth and has actually made this lie into a reality.\u201d<\/p>\n

The previous project involving the commemorative Trump-Cyrus coin was so successful the organizers of the new effort are optimistic about an international effort to plan and fund the rebuilding of the Temple, a project fraught with controversy even within Israel, because of the Islamic presence of the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock \u2013 two shrines atop the Temple Mount. …<\/p>\n

The coin is currently being sold on the Mikdash Education Center\u2019s website. Because of Donald Trump’s decision related to Jerusalem, some have believed this will make it easier for a ‘Third Temple’ to be built there and that Donald Trump is the biblical ‘Cyrus’ (see Donald Trump reportedly a \u2018Cyrus\u2019 preparing the way for a new Jewish temple<\/a>).<\/p>\n

The Sanhedrin released another coin related to that earlier as well (see also Sanhedrin Mints Silver Half Shekel With Images of Trump and Cyrus: Is the \u2018third temple\u2019 necessary for a successful Trump presidency?<\/a>):<\/p>\n

The Sanhedrin hopes that the sale of the coins will help it raise money for a temple as well as items related to having to operate a temple.<\/p>\n

Because certain Jews and Evangelicals believe Donald Trump is a Cyrus, does that make him one?<\/p>\n

No, although Donald Trump seems to like people thinking so.<\/p>\n

Interestingly, in March of 2017, Donald Trump did attribute a quote to Cyrus the Great (see Donald \u2018Trump of God,\u2019 Cyrus, or Apocalyptic?<\/a>) which, at least in my view, showed that he was trying to make the Cyrus connection he would have been aware that others have claimed him to be a type of.<\/p>\n

The Cyrus view is not limited to Protestant and Jewish groups.<\/p>\n

Alton \u201cDon\u201d Billingsley of the Church of God-Faithful Flock (CGFF) took out an advertisement in an edition of The Journal: News of the Churches of God<\/em> related to this. Here are some of his claims:<\/p>\n

Possibly as soon as 2018 or 2019, President Trump will follow the historical duality of King Cyrus, who made a proclamation that the second Temple would be rebuilt in the first year of his reign over Babylon. This was after the LORD stirred his spirit up to do it (Ezra 1:1). Jesus Christ will also stir up the spirit of President Trump to do the same before he leaves office in 2020. The way was paved for the Temple to be built when Jesus Christ stirred the mind of President Trump to move the Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. He fulfilled the promise he had made during his campaign to do it. And he did it in his first year in office as did King Cyrus in his first year. \u2026<\/p>\n

President Trump has been made aware of his likeness to King Cyrus by the religious people in Israel. And Christ using his brashness and lack of fear of what anyone thinks of his decisions will stir up his mind at the exact time to make the proclamation. With his support, the Jewish people will begin the sacrificial offerings and laying the foundation for the new Temple. \u2026<\/p>\n

Considering the hostility of the Arab nations and their threats of war, there are those who say this will be utterly impossible! There will be hostility against it from Congress and the Defense Department as well as from others. But to say this is impossible in view of their hostility and threats is to leave Jesus Christ out of the picture! Nothing is impossible with Him! Please remember His intervention at needed times can be seen throughout history. And the prophecy concerning the Temple will be fulfilled, for He will be behind it (Isaiah 46:8-10). \u2026<\/p>\n

the need to make the needed changes in life to be protected from the awful things that are very near to all of us and be prepared for the coming of Jesus Christ. And seeing the building of the Third Temple should be a real wake-up call to that end! \u2026<\/p>\n

Now let’s go back to the Hebrew scriptures and look at the Cyrus prophecy:<\/p>\n

45:1 \u201cThus says the Lord to His anointed,
\nTo Cyrus, whose right hand I have held \u2014
\nTo subdue nations before him
\nAnd loose the armor of kings,
\nTo open before him the double doors,
\nSo that the gates will not be shut:

\nAnd cut the bars of iron.

We see that this prophecy was fulfilled in Ezra:<\/p>\n

1 Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of the Lord by the mouth of Jeremiah might be fulfilled, the Lord stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, so that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and also put it in writing, saying,<\/p>\n

2 Thus says Cyrus king of Persia:<\/p>\n

All the kingdoms of the earth the Lord God of heaven has given me. And He has commanded me to build Him a house at Jerusalem which is in Judah. 3 Who is among you of all His people? May his God be with him, and let him go up to Jerusalem which is in Judah, and build the house of the Lord God of Israel (He is God), which is in Jerusalem. 4 And whoever is left in any place where he dwells, let the men of his place help him with silver and gold, with goods and livestock, besides the freewill offerings for the house of God which is in Jerusalem.<\/em><\/p>\n

5 Then the heads of the fathers\u2019 houses of Judah and Benjamin, and the priests and the Levites, with all whose spirits God had moved, arose to go up and build the house of the Lord which is in Jerusalem. 6 And all those who were around them encouraged them with articles of silver and gold, with goods and livestock, and with precious things, besides all that was willingly offered.<\/p>\n

7 King Cyrus also brought out the articles of the house of the Lord, which Nebuchadnezzar had taken from Jerusalem and put in the temple of his gods; 8 and Cyrus king of Persia brought them out by the hand of Mithredath the treasurer, and counted them out to Sheshbazzar the prince of Judah. (Ezra 1:1-8)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The Pulpit Commentary<\/em> states this about the prophecy in Isaiah:<\/p>\n

It is certainly a very marvellous thing that Isaiah, living at the close of the eighth and the beginning of the seventh century B.C.<\/span>, should -mention a king by name who did not ascend the throne till the middle of the sixth; but no one can suppose that God could not have made such a revelation to him if he pleased.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Donald Trump is NOT doing the same thing and the Cyrus prophecy was fulfilled thousands of years ago.<\/p>\n

But various Protestants and some others have attempted to claim that Donald Trump is a modern day Cyrus and\/or the \u201ctrump of God\u201d (see Donald \u2018Trump of God,\u2019 Cyrus, or Apocalyptic?<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Donald Trump is apocalyptic\u2013and there will be many unintended consequences of his presidency.<\/p>\n

But unlike Cyrus, Donald Trump was not prophesied by name to get a Jewish temple rebuilt.<\/p>\n

Cyrus the Great of Biblical fame was a Gentile king of Persia, modern-day Iran, that was used by God to allow the Jews that were captured by Nebuchadnezzar to go rebuild God\u2019s temple in Jerusalem. Many today claim that President Donald Trump is a modern-day Cyrus in that they believe President Trump is being used by God to help the nation of Israel rebuild the temple in Jerusalem on what is now one of Islam\u2019s holiest sites, the site of the Dome of the Rock.
