European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen easily survived a motion of censure from the far right of the\u00a0European Parliament<\/a>on Thursday, though the dressing down she took from her would-be political partners in the process is probably a bigger concern.<\/p>\n

360 parliamentarians backed the German center-right EU official<\/a>\u00a0in the no-confidence vote, 18 abstained, and 175 voted against her. More than 160 members of parliament (MEPs) did not show up to vote.<\/p>\n

I would not say that she “easily survived a motion of censure” as 353 did not back her–which was 49.5%.<\/p>\n

The motion of censure against Ursula von der Leyen highlights concerns over lack of transparency and accountability in her leadership, according to EU law professor Alberto Alemanno,\u00a0who says “more people will ask if she is the right person for the job…”\u00a0…<\/h3>\n

Alemanno also noted that concerns about von der Leyen’s leadership are not limited to the far-right. Her secretive handling of vaccine negotiations and unwillingness to engage with the media have drawn criticism across the political spectrum.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis censure motion is acting as a lightning rod for broader frustration,\u201d he added. \u201cIt brings together complaints from multiple camps and highlights a growing desire for greater democratic accountability.\u201d<\/p>\n

A senior European Commission official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the vote had been widely discussed within the Berlaymont headquarters.<\/p>\n

\u201cOfficials see this as a warning. Her leadership style\u2014extremely centralised and often politically ambiguous\u2014has made her vulnerable. As far as the “right” being against her, migrant matters are one concern that many have, which has tended to be ignored or downplayed.<\/p>\n
