According to the Talmud (Sukkot 29a), lunar eclipses are traditionally viewed as omens specifically related to Israel, as the Moon spiritually represents the Jewish people. This connection stems from the Jewish calendar system, which is based on lunar cycles, in contrast to solar-based calendars used by many other nations. The Talmudic interpretation suggests that if a lunar eclipse occurs in the eastern hemisphere of the sky, it serves as an omen for eastern nations. In contrast, Western eclipses are considered to affect Western nations.<\/p>\n

However, the Talmud provides an essential disclaimer to these ominous interpretations, stating: \u201cWhen Israel does the will of the place (God), they have nothing to fear from all of this.\u201d This teaching references the Prophet Jeremiah, who declared: \u201cThus said Hashem: Do not learn to go the way of the nations, And do not be dismayed by portents in the sky; Let the nations be dismayed by them!\u201d (Jeremiah 10:2)<\/p>\n

The Talmud (Hulin 60b) addresses a fascinating aspect of solar and lunar eclipses through its interpretation of the biblical creation account. The text examines the apparent contradiction in Genesis 1:16, which initially describes the Sun and Moon as \u201ctwo great lights\u201d but then distinguishes them as the \u201cgreater light\u201d (the Sun) and the \u201clesser light\u201d (the Moon).<\/p>\n

According to Talmudic teaching, God created the Sun and Moon as equals in size and intensity. However, the Moon complained, saying, \u201cTwo kings cannot share one crown.\u201d In response, God diminished the Moon\u2019s intensity while compensating it by having Israel set their calendar according to lunar cycles. This narrative explains why eclipses can occur at all \u2013 the Sun and Moon appear the same size from Earth due to a remarkable cosmic coincidence where the Sun is approximately 400 times farther away but also 400 times larger than the Moon. Scientists believe that the Earth is the only planet yet discovered that experiences eclipses, emphasizing their significance.<\/p>\n

Jewish mystical tradition interprets the Moon\u2019s diminishment as temporary, prophesying that at the end of days, the Sun and Moon will be restored to equal size and intensity. This restoration is connected to messianic prophecies found throughout Hebrew scripture.<\/p>\n

The Prophet Joel provides one of the most significant biblical references to blood moons in the context of the end times: \u201cBefore the great and terrible day of Hashem comes, I will set portents in the sky and on earth: Blood and fire and pillars of smoke; The sun shall turn into darkness And the moon into blood\u201d (Joel 3:3-5). This prophecy directly links lunar eclipses to the coming of the Messiah and the final redemption.<\/p>\n

Rabbi Yosef Berger of King David\u2019s Tomb in Jerusalem interprets lunar eclipses as divine emphasis on worldly confusion, drawing parallels between astronomical phenomena and contemporary social issues. He suggests that just as people struggle to distinguish fundamental differences in the natural world, the eclipse symbolizes broader spiritual confusion. He noted that by hiding the moon, \u201cGod is emphasizing the confusion in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe sun represents the masculine and the moon represents the feminine,\u201d Rabbi Berger said.\u201dA person who cannot tell the difference between a man and a woman is a person who cannot tell the difference between the sun and the moon.\u201d<\/p>\n

Modern Jewish scholars continue to find relevance in these ancient teachings. Rabbi Mordechai Genuth<\/a> discussed the meaning of eclipses in Jewish tradition, explaining that under normal circumstances, lunar eclipses are considered a bad omen for Israel. This is based on a section in the Talmud (Sukkot 29a) that specifies that lunar eclipses are a bad omen for Israel since the moon spiritually represents Israel. If the lunar eclipse takes place in the east side of the heavens, then it is a bad omen for all the nations in the east, and similarly, if it occurs in the western hemisphere of the sky, it is a bad sign for all the nations in the west.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the time of the Talmud, only Israel set the calendar according to the moon,\u201d Rabbi Genuth said. \u201cSetting the calendar according to the sun was the practice of the idolaters, like Rome which named the solar months and days after pagan gods. Today, the Muslims set their calendar according to the moon, even more than the Jews, in a manner that leads their calendar to be imbalanced. But yes, there will be one of prophetic importance prior to the return of Jesus, the Messiah.<\/p>\n

And while many in the West have gender confusion, that is not related to this or any other blood moon.<\/p>\n

Let me add that the Bible does not teach that the moon and the sun will be the same size.<\/p>\n

And finally, no, the blood moon expected today is not a warning to the Arabs.<\/p>\n

We need to rely on biblical passages, not Jewish tradition, when it comes to such matters.<\/p>\n

The Bible teaches the following:<\/p>\n

2 … Do not be dismayed at the signs of heaven,
\nFor the Gentiles are dismayed at them.\u00a0 (Jeremiah 10:2)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

As Jeremiah 10:2 states, we are not to be dismayed by things in the sky. And that includes tonight’s blood moon.<\/p>\n

Years ago, I denounced the view that the \u2018blood moons\u2019 of 2014 and 2015 could mean that Jesus would return or that the \u2018Day of the Lord\u2019 was about to start. This was something that Mark Biltz (who practices Messianic Judaism<\/a>) started promoting back in 2008\u2013but he was wrong then and is not a reliable “Biblical expert” when it comes to many things, including the ramifications of blood moons. I also denounced the super blood moon prophetic nonsense in 2018 and in 2019 denounced the super blood moon prophetic nonsense for 2019, plus another claim in 2022.<\/p>\n

On the Day of Pentecost in Acts 2, the Apostle Peter included the following statements while speaking:<\/p>\n

The “day of the Lord” does not begin until when the tribulation has ended. Jesus said:<\/p>\n

29 “Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 30 Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. (Matthew 24:29-31)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In the Book of Revelation we read:<\/p>\n

12 I looked when He opened the sixth seal, and behold, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became like blood. 13 And the stars of heaven fell to the earth, as a fig tree drops its late figs when it is shaken by a mighty wind. 14 Then the sky receded as a scroll when it is rolled up, and every mountain and island was moved out of its place. (Revelation 6:12-15)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

While there are prophecies related to the moon looking like blood and events in the heavens, what is to happen today is NOT a warning to the Arabs.<\/p>\n

The opening of the 5th seal in Revelation is connected with the start of the great tribulation, but notice that the moon is not to appear to turn to blood until the opening of the 6th seal, which comes about 2 1\/2 years later.<\/p>\n

No one should place their prophetic beliefs on blood moons that come before the tribulation–the Bible speaks of those that come later, but the issues with them cannot happen for several years from now.<\/p>\n
