India is close to finalising large parts of its free trade agreement with the European Union (EU), Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal has said.<\/p>\n

His remarks come ahead of a visit from top EU trade officials for further negotiations, starting 12 September.<\/p>\n

The talks are happening as US President Donald Trump has\u00a0called on<\/a>\u00a0EU leaders to impose 100% tariffs on India and China for buying Russian oil. The US has imposed a 50% tariff on goods from India, which includes a 25% penalty for its transactions with Russia.<\/p>\n

A majority of Europeans think the EU-US trade deal is a “humiliation” for the bloc and want Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, its ultimate negotiator, to resign as a result, a new poll has found.<\/p>\n

The survey was conducted by research firm Cluster17 exclusively for Le Grand Continent and published on Tuesday morning, a day before von der Leyen is set to deliver her\u00a0State of the European Union<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0speech in Strasbourg.<\/p>\n

It was carried out between 30 August and 4 September among 5,302 people in the five largest member states: Germany, France, Italy, Spain and Poland. …<\/p>\n

Under the agreement, which is already in effect, the vast majority of EU-made goods bound for the US market are subject to a 15% tariff, while the vast majority of US-made goods bound for the EU market are exempt from duties. \u00a0…<\/p>\n

Asked about the emotion triggered by the deal, 52% of respondents in the survey chose “humiliation”, while 22% chose “indifference” and 8% chose “relief”. …<\/p>\n

A huge majority of 77% believes the terms of the deal mostly favour the American economy, with just 13% saying it represents a “compromise” that benefits both sides equally. Only 2% believe it mostly favours the European economy. …<\/p>\n

The blame for the lopsided outcome is put firmly on the European Commission, which has exclusive competence to determine the bloc’s trade policy. … The negativity translates into a whopping 60% of respondents who say they are “very favourable” or “rather favourable” to von der Leyen’s resignation. …<\/p>\n

Yes, tariffs, sanctions, economic threats, and policies from the Trump Administration are pushing those in friendly nations to consider that the USA is an enemy. As far as change coming to the EU, that is prophesied to happen per Revelation 17:12-13–and the leader will be more totalitarian than Ursula von der Leyen (cf. Revelation 13).<\/p>\n

The USA, itself, is turning friends into enemies, and that is consistent with biblical prophecies (e.g. Lamentations 1:1-2).<\/p>\n

There is an expression that “the enemy of your enemy is your friend.” This will help push various other groups of nations (like BRICS+ and the SCO) towards Europe and vice versa.<\/p>\n

And it is more than just people on the streets of the European Union who have been changing their views of America.<\/p>\n

Thanks to the recent weakness of the US dollar the euro could \u201cplay a greater international role\u201d as it gains importance in the global financial system. This view is being advanced by Christine Lagarde, President of the European Central Bank (ECB). As Lagarde stated last week, the US dollar\u2019s share of global currency reserves has fallen to 58 per cent, the lowest since 1994. In the current weakness of the dollar she sees as an opportunity for the euro. Bewildered by Donald Trump\u2019s economic policies, both private investors and governments may be motivated to keep their reserves in euros. However, the Eurozone would still need, said Lagarde, a \u201csolid and credible geopolitical foundation\u201d for this enhanced role \u2013 a foundation cemented with strong military capabilities. She went on to say that the European Union would finally have to create the long-promised single capital market and gain greater effectiveness by widening the scope of majority decision-making. Parallel to Lagarde\u2019s ambitious plans for Europe\u2019s economy, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is advocating \u201cEuropean independence\u201d from the United States as the next \u201cmajor European project\u201d. This, again, would mean \u201ca leading role in the global economy of tomorrow\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The weakening dollar<\/h3>\n

The current weakness of the US dollar has been the subject of intense debate since the world\u2019s reserve currency began its sharp descent back in March. While 1.02 dollars were enough to buy one euro at the beginning of February, it now takes almost 1.14 dollars.\u00a0 …<\/p>\n

Opportunities for the euro<\/h3>\n

The dollar\u2019s weakness and its consequences were addressed last Monday by Christine Lagarde, President of the European Central Bank (ECB), in a speech at the Hertie School in Berlin. Lagarde placed currency problems in the broader context of current global political and economic developments. \u201cMultilateral cooperation is being replaced by zero-sum thinking and bilateral power games,\u201d Lagarde observed, so open markets were giving way to national protectionism. This posed major risks for the entire European Union, she said, since \u201cour economy is deeply integrated into the global trading system, with exports accounting for close to one fifth of our value added\u201d and supporting 30 million jobs.\u201d[2] On the other hand, this trend also offered unexpected opportunities for the euro, she argued. There was currently \u201cuncertainty\u201d about \u201cthe dominant role of the US dollar,\u201d explained the ECB President, which \u201ccould open the door for the euro to play a greater international role.\u201d At present, only 20 per cent of all currency reserves worldwide are held in euros, compared with 58 per cent in US dollars. But a prolonged period of dollar weakness could, start shifting the balance significantly in favour of the European single currency.<\/p>\n

Stronger foundations<\/h3>\n

In her speech, Lagarde pointed out that \u201cincreasing the international role of the euro can have positive implications for the euro area\u201d by making it possible for governments and businesses to \u201cborrow at lower cost, helping boost internal demand at a time when external demand is becoming less certain.\u201d[3] In addition, a larger volume of trade could be conducted in euros, which would give the EU greater independence. All of this would also provide greater protection \u201cfrom sanctions and other coercive measures,\u201d a clear reference to new ways of warding off US attacks in the current context of a global economic war. Lagarde stressed that this would only happen if the euro was made more attractive to investors and governments by working on its fundamentals.
