Leading German defence start-ups enter \u2018strategic partnership\u2019 to expand AI-based warfare. They seek autonomy from US components and US finance.<\/h3>\n

BERLIN<\/span> (own report) \u2013 Two of Germany\u2019s leading defence start-ups are forming a \u201cstrategic partnership\u201d to advance AI-based warfare development. The companies both aim at the greatest possible autonomy from US players in the field. The development of an \u201cAI-based reconnaissance and response network\u201d will, they claim, enable armed forces to \u201cact faster, more precisely and more efficiently in combat situations and operate at greater distances than today.\u201d Their weaponry will deliberately be \u201cEuropean in design\u201d, according to both Helsing and Arx Robotics. Helsing is the most expensive German start-up ever, valued at twelve billion euros. Arx Robotics is also seen as a rising star in the start-up scene. Unlike legacy defence companies such as Rheinmetall, which typically have close transatlantic business links, the new start-up scene hopes to establish European, and in some cases even purely German, armaments production independently of the United States. …<\/p>\n

For Europe, in Europe\u2019<\/h3>\n

Arx Robotics, also founded in 2021, shares Helsing\u2019s quest for autonomous production that can operate as independently as possible from non-European component suppliers. The start-up also says it has been careful to attract \u201cexclusively European investors\u201d. It is committed to ensuring that \u201cthe start-up\u2019s supply chain is European\u201d.[5] Arx Robotics manufactures mini-tanks, an unmanned ground vehicle called the \u2018Gereon\u2019, which weighs just under 400 kilograms. These robotic mini-tanks are primarily intended for use in the military \u201cdeath corridor\u201d along the front line between two armies. …<\/p>\n

\u2018European design\u2019<\/h3>\n

Last week, Helsing and Arx Robotics announced a \u201cstrategic partnership\u201d. They aim to \u201cdevelop an AI-based reconnaissance and response network for European defence.\u201d[8] More specifically, the objective is to \u201cdigitize, network and AI-equip the previously highly fragmented and analogue land assets.\u201d This should enable \u201carmed forces in combat situations\u201d to act \u201cfaster, more precisely and more efficiently, and at greater distances than today.\u201d What\u2019s more, the partnership is explicitly \u201cEuropean in scope\u201d. …<\/p>\n

Competitive advantages<\/h3>\n

Helsing and Arx Robotics are prime examples of the new German defence start-ups focused on \u201cintra-European or German value chains\u201d without US components, notes Franz Enders, the author of a recent study on the subject. \u201c 09\/15\/25 https:\/\/www.german-foreign-policy.com\/en\/news\/detail\/10114<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The article mentions German-European military plans to \u201cact faster, more precisely and more efficiently in combat situations and operate at greater distances than today.\u201d Acting faster brings to mind the ‘blitzkrieg’ tactics Germany used in WWII. Notice also that the Europeans want their forces to be able to operate at greater distances than they do today. Think against places like the USA!<\/p>\n

As long-time readers of this COGwriter Church of God News page realize, I have been warning since 2009 that the Europeans would rely on technology to get to the point that it could take over the USA, which a future European leader is prophesied to do per Daniel 11:39 and Isaiah 10:5-11.<\/p>\n

Europeans continue to take steps to not only develop military technology, but to do so in ways that are independent of the USA.<\/p>\n

But military tech is not the only way the Europeans are moving away from the USA, trade is another.<\/p>\n

Despite the Trump Administration trying to push Europe to be harsher against China and India, the EU is resisting. Notice:<\/p>\n

Why the European Union won’t hit China with the 100% tariffs that Trump wants<\/h2>\n

Donald Trump’s request for 100% tariffs on China is unlikely to gather the necessary support among European Union countries.<\/h3>\n

Donald Trump has thrown down his gauntlet: he wants European nations to impose 50% to 100% tariffs on China …<\/p>\n

While Brussels voiced readiness to accelerate<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0the phase-out of Russian fossil fuels, it pushed back rather decisively against the request for the three-digit tariffs.<\/p>\n

“Any new measures to be announced in the 19th sanctions package will be fully in line with EU rules and procedures, notably the long-held principle that our sanctions do not apply extra-territorially,” said a spokesperson of the European Commission.<\/p>\n

The European Union (EU) proposed a new strategic agenda with India<\/a> that raises bilateral relations to a higher level amid\u00a0calls from the United States to hit India with massive tariffs<\/a>. …<\/p>\n

But as the EU and the US align their policies against Russia on secondary sanctions<\/a>\u00a0for its war in Ukraine<\/a>, the Trump reportedly called on the bloc to impose up to 100% tariffs on India.<\/p>\n

However, the EU seems to have adopted a different approach in its new strategic agenda<\/a>: lure India away from Russia’s orbit of influence\u00a0through a trade deal<\/a> and enhanced strategic ties.<\/p>\n

“Now is the time to focus on reliable partners and double down on partnerships rooted in shared interests and guided by common values,” European\u00a0Commission<\/a> President Ursula von der Leyen<\/a> said.<\/p>\n

“With our new EU-India strategy, we are taking our relationship to the next level.” …<\/p>\n

An EU official said there might be advantages to a better relationship with India.<\/p>\n

India is a “moderating voice,” … in forums, such as BRICS<\/a> and the China-led Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), where New Delhi has a seat but the EU is missing. …<\/p>\n

Europeans view India as a partner equally interested in preserving a rules-based global trade order. …<\/p>\n

EU and Germany push for a new World Trade Organization<\/h2>\n

Brussels and Berlin have launched a new initiative aimed at bypassing the long-standing paralysis of the World Trade Organization (WTO) caused by the United States.<\/strong> …<\/p>\n

A proposal, introduced by European Commission<\/a> President Ursula von der Leyen<\/a> and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz<\/a>, has sparked considerable attention.<\/p>\n

Speaking at the end of a summit of EU leaders in Brussels on June 27,\u00a0they floated the idea of the EU taking the lead in forming an alternative to the World Trade Organization (WTO)<\/a>, the world trade body that has been in place since 1995.<\/p>\n

Merz said\u00a0the idea was in its early stages but could include mechanisms to resolve disputes, as the WTO was meant to do.<\/p>\n

“You all know that the WTO doesn’t work anymore,” he said, adding that a\u00a0“new kind of trade organization” could gradually replace “what we no longer have with the WTO.”<\/p>\n

The German chancellor was referring\u00a0to the near-total breakdown of the WTO’s dispute resolution mechanism<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It was former US President Barack Obama who first\u00a0blocked appointments to the WTO’s Appellate Body\u00a0\u2014\u00a0its top court for trade disputes\u00a0\u2014\u00a0during his later years in office.<\/p>\n

That blockade has continued under every US administration<\/a> since, regardless of party affiliation, as successive governments have opposed WTO rulings that they argue undermine US national interests. …<\/p>\n

The EU’s von der Leyen emphasized plans for a particularly close partnership with like-minded trade nations in Asia, referencing potential cooperation with the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). …<\/p>\n

Trade liberalization without the United States<\/h2>\n

But can Europe realistically create a new WTO without US involvement? …<\/p>\n

J\u00fcrgen Matthes, an international trade policy expert at the Cologne, Germany-based German Economic Institute (IW), expressed support …<\/p>\n

“A formal EU application to join the CPTPP would be a strategically important move in several respects,” Matthes said. “It would send a clear signal to the US that its protectionism is isolating it, while the rest of the world continues to liberalize trade.”<\/p>\n

Matthes also said this would create a “remarkably large trans-regional trade agreement,” involving major economies, “with the EU as the largest bloc.”<\/p>\n

“It would cover nearly all continents. And maybe some African countries could be brought on board as well,” he added. … “The goal is to form a strategic trade alliance that addresses today’s pressing issues in global trade \u2014 not only US protectionism, but also the massive market distortions caused by China’s subsidies, which current WTO rules don’t effectively address,” said Matthes. …<\/p>\n

The EU’s dual message to both the US and China appears to be part of a deliberate communication strategy that has evolved since US President Donald Trump’s<\/a> tariff war<\/a>. …<\/p>\n

Matthes envisions a new alliance under the banner of “Open Markets with Fair Trade.” In such a setup, “the US is out when it comes to open markets, and China is out when it comes to fair trade \u2014 unless things change under a new US administration or a reformed China emerges.”<\/p>\n

He sees multiple advantages to this strategy. “We’d achieve more trade liberalization and gain access to new markets. Yes, Europe wants to dominate world trade. I also reported about this plan when EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen originally proposed it (see EU proposing to set standards for a new (or substantially changed) international trading organization<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Trade<\/strong><\/p>\n

Historically, Donald Trump has called for \u201cfair trade\u201d and indicated that various nations, including several in Asia, are not engaged in fair trade, so he has proposed high tariffs.[i]<\/a><\/p>\n

Donald Trump has called tariffs, \u201cthe most beautiful word in the dictionary\u201d and even proposed massive tariffs (up to 2000%) on Mexico if it will not do what he wants.[ii]<\/a> He has basically also proposed a minimum of 10% tariffs on goods from much of the rest of the world.<\/p>\n

Some believe that Donald Trump\u2019s positions on trade will lead to a global trade war.[iii]<\/a> Europe has said it will hit back against Donald Trump\u2019s tariff policies.[iv]<\/a> It is my position that trade disputes will be a factor in Europe taking military action against the USA one day.<\/p>\n

One of the unintended consequences of Donald Trump\u2019s threats of tariffs and other trade matters is that it is motivating nations he has threatened to look to trade more with each other.<\/p>\n

The morning after his reelection, I wrote:<\/p>\n

According to the major media, Donald Trump won re-election. … Europe will get more serious about trade deals with others internationally, such as being more motivated to approve the trade deal with the Mercosur block of South America.[v]<\/a><\/p>\n

On December 6, 2024, Politico<\/em> reported that the European Union approved the massive Mercosur trade deal, despite opposition from France and others, and also pointed to Donald Trump\u2019s reelection as a factor.[vi]<\/a><\/p>\n

Energy and climate policy differences between the Europeans and Donald Trump look to increase the negative view many in Europe already have about the USA. …<\/a><\/p>\n
