This year, clocks will go back on Sunday, 26 October.<\/p>\n
While many welcome the extra hour, the change still nudges our internal timing – and some people feel it more than others.<\/p>\n
“Generally speaking, despite complaints about evenings getting darker, the autumn one is usually perceived as less painful,” Professor Malcolm von Schantz, a chronobiologist at Northumbria University, told Euronews Health.<\/p>\n
“Those who dislike the autumn change mainly complain that it\u2019s suddenly dark when they leave work. But there are two points to that. First, it simply reflects where we live: at that time of year, there aren\u2019t enough daylight hours to keep both mornings and evenings bright. That\u2019s not a result of the clock change, just geography. …<\/p>\n
Do we need to rethink Daylight Saving Time?<\/h3>\n
Many scientists and sleep organisations – including the British Sleep Society, which made an official statement on the matter last year – support ending the biannual clock changes in favour of permanent standard time.<\/p>\n
The European Union proposed ending seasonal clock changes in 2018, and while the European Parliament supported it in principle, member states couldn\u2019t agree on whether to adopt a permanent standard time or summer time.<\/p>\n
For now, the clock continues to tick back and forth each year.<\/p>\n

Many countries have used it at various times since then, particularly since the energy crisis of the 1970s.<\/p>\n Here is something else related to it from Time<\/em>:<\/p>\n That Daylight Saving Time began in Germany on May 1, 1916, in the hopes that it would save energy during World War I, according to Michael Downing, author of Spring Forward<\/em>: The Annual Madness of Daylight Saving Time.<\/em> But, though Germans were first to mess with their clocks, they likely got the idea from Britain\u2014and from someone whose ideas about Daylight Saving had little to do with conserving fuel.<\/p>\n William Willett had in 1907 published The<\/em> Waste of Daylight.<\/em> Willett was inspired by an early-morning epiphany that \u201cthe sun shines upon the land for several hours each day while we are asleep\u201d and yet there \u201cremains only a brief spell of declining daylight in which to spend the short period of leisure at our disposal.\u201d Though he did mention that it would save money to reduce the use of artificial lighting, his main purpose was the increase enjoyment of sunlight. He lobbied Parliament for such legislation until his death in 1915\u2014not living to see the law passed in England shortly after it was in Germany. …<\/p>\n Across the pond, the first U.S. law on Daylight Saving Time went into effect on March 19, 1918<\/a> for the same fuel saving reasons, about a year after the country entered the war.
