They found that vegetarians who ate ultra-processed plant-based meat alternatives were 42 percent more likely to have depression, compared with vegetarians who stuck to whole food proteins, such as chickpeas, eggs, beans, lentils and quinoa.<\/p>\n<p>Ultra-processed food has been <a class=\"multivariate\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/disease-causing-foods-deliberately-sold-kids-ultra-processed-lawsuit-1999281\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">linked with a number of negative health outcomes<\/a>, such as obesity, diabetes, inflammation, heart disease, <a class=\"multivariate\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/psoriasis-skin-condition-linked-ultra-processed-food-1992442\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">skin conditions<\/a> and <a class=\"multivariate\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/upfs-immune-system-cancer-2002613\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cancer<\/a>. As a category of food, it is the subject of some debate, but it is generally defined as foods that are industrially manufactured, using processing techniques and chemical ingredients that are usually unavailable to individuals cooking at home. &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>The scientists also found that, on average, the meat-alternative eaters had higher blood pressure, as well as higher levels of an inflammatory marker called C-reactive protein in their blood. The U.S. approved the sale of what\u2019s now being called \u201ccell-cultivated\u201d or \u201ccell-cultured\u201d meat for the first time in June 2023. Earlier this year, both Florida and Alabama banned the sale of cultivated meat and seafood. Other states and federal lawmakers also are looking to restrict it, arguing the product could hurt farmers and pose a safety risk to the public. &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Cultivated products are grown in steel tanks using cells from a living animal, a fertilized egg or a storage bank. The cells are fed with special blends of water, sugar, fats and vitamins. Once they\u2019ve grown, they\u2019re formed into cutlets, nuggets and other shapes. &#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy\">Skyler Myers, agreed about the texture being different when eating a piece of meat by itself but said it just seemed like normal chicken when he ate the tostada.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy\">\u201cThere\u2019s no difference,\u201d Myers said. \u201cI mean, there\u2019s no way you would ever know.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/wireStory\/lab-grown-meat-maker-hosts-miami-tasting-party-111552780\">https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/wireStory\/lab-grown-meat-maker-hosts-miami-tasting-party-111552780<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>There are numerous differences between real meat and lab grown meat.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, I have long warned that there simply have not been sufficient studies to prove proper safety and health impacts, nor is it practical to do them. In order to properly do this, millions of people would need to be involved. And the time period would need to be enough to cover 3-5 generations&#8211;it would probably need to take between 200-400 years to be able to have the data to come to a proper scientific conclusion about that. And, of course, that has not happened. CAFOs are bad \u2014 but the new fake food era is going to be even worse. \u2026<\/p>\n<h2>What Is Fake Meat?<\/h2>\n<p>Fake meat is marketed as a health food, but it\u2019s nothing more than a highly ultraprocessed mixture of chemicals. Impossible Foods, for instance, uses genetic engineering to insert the DNA from soy plants into yeast, creating GE yeast with the gene for soy leghemoglobin.<sup><span id=\"edn9\" data-hash=\"#ednref9\">9<\/span><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Impossible Foods refers to this compound as \u201cheme,\u201d but technically plants produce non-heme iron, and this is GE yeast-derived soy leghemoglobin.<sup><span id=\"edn10\" data-hash=\"#ednref10\">10<\/span><\/sup>\u00a0Heme iron only occurs in meat and seafood. Impossible Foods\u2019 GE heme is used in their fake meat burgers as a color additive that makes the product appear to \u201cbleed\u201d like real meat.<\/p>\n<p>The health effects of GE heme are unknown, but this didn\u2019t stop the U.S. Food and Drug Administration from approving soy leghemoglobin in 2019. The Center for Food Safety (CFS) filed a lawsuit challenging the approval, which they called \u201cunusually rapid\u201d<sup><span id=\"edn11\" data-hash=\"#ednref11\">11<\/span><\/sup>\u00a0and risky for public health. \u2026<\/p>\n<h2>Impossible Foods\u2019 Fake Meat Is Loaded With Glyphosate, LA<\/h2>\n<p>Considering that many ingredients in fake meat products are made from GE soy,<sup><span id=\"edn16\" data-hash=\"#ednref16\">16<\/span><\/sup>\u00a0it\u2019s not surprising that they\u2019re also contaminated with the herbicide glyphosate. Consumer advocacy group Moms Across America (MAA) commissioned Health Research Institute Labs (HRI Labs), an independent laboratory that tests both micronutrients and toxins found in food, to determine how much glyphosate is in the Impossible Burger and its competitor, the Beyond Burger.<\/p>\n<p>The total result of glyphosate and AMPA, the main metabolite of glyphosate, in the burgers was 11.3 parts per billion (ppb) in the Impossible Burger and 1 ppb in the Beyond Burger.<sup><span id=\"edn17\" data-hash=\"#ednref17\">17<\/span><\/sup>\u00a0\u2026<\/p>\n<p>The glyphosate in fake meat is one issue. The excess amounts of omega-6 fat in the form of linoleic acid (LA) are another.
