After hearing a lot of rhetoric and threats from US President Donald Trump, the Europeans are working to establish a much stronger military presence on Greenland:<\/p>\n

European troops arrive in Greenland as US and Denmark talks fail to resolve dispute<\/h2>\n

15 January 2026<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

European military personnel began arriving in Greenland on Thursday, hours after a meeting between US, Danish and Greenlandic officials in Washington failed to resolve what Denmark’s foreign minister called “fundamental disagreement” over the mineral-rich Arctic island.<\/p>\n

France, Sweden, Germany and Norway announced Wednesday they would deploy military personnel as part of a reconnaissance mission to Greenland’s capital Nuuk.<\/p>\n

Germany’s defence ministry said Thursday that the reconnaissance mission to Greenland by several European NATO members aims “to explore options for ensuring security in light of Russian and Chinese threats in the Arctic”.<\/p>\n

A 13-strong Bundeswehr reconnaissance team would deploy to Nuuk from Thursday to Sunday at Denmark’s invitation, the ministry said.<\/p>\n

French President Emmanuel Macron said on Thursday France would soon send more “land, air, and sea” forces to join the military exercise in Greenland. …<\/p>\n

The deployment was announced the same day the foreign ministers of Denmark and Greenland met with US Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Washington.<\/p>\n

Danish Foreign Minister Lars L\u00f8kke Rasmussen, speaking after leaving the White House, said a US takeover of Greenland was “absolutely not necessary.”<\/p>\n

“We didn’t manage to change the American position. It’s clear the president has this wish of conquering Greenland,” L\u00f8kke told reporters. “We therefore still have a fundamental disagreement, but we also agree to disagree.” …<\/p>\n

Trump, speaking after the meeting which he did not attend, for the first time sounded conciliatory on Greenland, acknowledging Denmark’s interests even as he again said he was not ruling out any options.<\/p>\n

European troops were arriving in Greenland<\/a> on Thursday in a show of support, as leaders scrambling to respond to President Donald Trump\u2019s threats<\/a> were thrown another American curveball.<\/p>\n

Trump pushed ahead with his aim of \u201cconquering\u201d one European territory, Denmark\u2019s top diplomat said after a high-stakes meeting in Washington on Wednesday.<\/a> …<\/p>\n

Trump’s comments drew new pushback from leaders in Europe, whose alarm over U.S. actions had for weeks been focused further north.<\/p>\n

Small numbers of military personnel from France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden were arriving in the Arctic island early Thursday. …<\/p>\n

Trump has doubled down on his demand that the U.S. take over Greenland for national security, …<\/p>\n

Denmark said Wednesday it was expanding its \u201cmilitary presence in and around Greenland\u201d …<\/p>\n

Denmark and other NATO allies have said the U.S. approach on Greenland threatens the very existence of the military alliance, …<\/p>\n

The unpredictability of Trump\u2019s position on Ukraine, coupled with his escalating threats toward Greenland, is leaving Europe in a perpetual frantic mode to cobble a response, said Christoph Meyer, professor of European and international politics at King\u2019s College London. …<\/p>\n

Europe’s foreign policy chief seems to agree. …<\/p>\n

But it’s clear that a policy of \u201ctreading lightly\u201d with Trump is not working for Europe, Meyer said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat Europeans are now trying to do is to kind of push back, but push back in a way that doesn\u2019t overly publicly antagonize the administration, while still sending a clear enough message that there are very significant costs if they continue down that path,\u201d he added. https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/world\/greenland\/european-troops-arrive-greenland-trump-throws-curveball-rcna254166<\/a><\/p>\n

The Danish prime minister, Mette Frederiksen, said Greenland\u2019s defence was a \u201ccommon concern\u201d …<\/p>\n

Troops from France, Germany, Norway and Sweden, … to Greenland<\/a>, a largely autonomous territory of the kingdom of Denmark, on Thursday. Denmark also announced it would be increasing its military presence.<\/p>\n

It comes after a difficult meeting<\/a> in Washington on Wednesday between the foreign ministers of Greenland and Denmark, Vivian Motzfeldt and Lars L\u00f8kke Rasmussen, and the US vice-president, JD Vance, and secretary of state, Marco Rubio.<\/p>\n

The visit was intended to smooth relations between Denmark and Greenland and the US, but it did not appear to have had the desired effect. Afterwards, Trump reiterated<\/a> his previous comments that the US \u201cneeds\u201d Greenland for national security, adding that Denmark could not be relied on to protect the island and that \u201csomething will work out\u201d.<\/p>\n

In a statement released on Thursday, Frederiksen said it was \u201cnot an easy meeting\u201d and that a working group was now being set up to discuss how Arctic security could be improved.<\/p>\n

\u201cHowever, that does not change the fact that there is a fundamental disagreement because the American ambition to take over Greenland is intact,\u201d she added. \u201cThis is obviously serious and therefore we continue our efforts to prevent that scenario from becoming a reality.\u201d https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2026\/jan\/15\/greenland-defence-nato-denmark-prime-minister-european-troops<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

So, Danish prime minister, Mette Frederiksen, said that they cannot allow the USA to takeover Greenland. And Europe has begun to send troops and develop plans.<\/p>\n

Donald Trump has greatly offended the Europeans on this matter. Having the Europeans to immediately send troops after meeting with top US officials is another unintended consequence of Donald Trump’s statements.<\/p>\n

Notice something written by an American who became a French citizen and who wrote the following in Paris:<\/p>\n

Europe must now tell Trump that enough is enough \u2013 and cut all ties with the US<\/h2>\n

As Danish and Greenlandic ministers prepared to face JD Vance\u00a0in the White House<\/a>, the question was would\u00a0Europe<\/em>\u00a0finally choose between Europe and the US? Will its leaders have the courage to tell the full truth \u2013 that the US isn\u2019t simply\u00a0abandoning its allies<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0destroying the international order<\/a>\u00a0but is now in the position of active and hostile predation by force \u2013 and more importantly, to act on it? To offer Denmark moral and material backing, and Greenland a future of self-determination and membership, rather than subservience to US resource plunder?<\/p>\n

Donald Trump has already set the tone by saying the US will seize Greenland \u201cone way or the other\u201d, and no part of the triumvirate around him is trying to hide their imperial intentions any more. …<\/p>\n

If the US actually attacks Denmark by invading Greenland, and declares war on the EU, a\u00a0treaty-bound defensive alliance<\/a>, the hand of history will be forced. …<\/p>\n

And if the US doesn\u2019t attack Denmark, Europe\u2019s best chance of surviving as a free and open continent in an imperial world is still to force the rupture with the US, force the consequences, and force the federalism\u00a0anyway. … <\/em>it is time for Europe to tell the US to leave its European military bases, throw off the yoke of US tech billionaires, begin a concerted push to fund public media as a form of informational defence \u2013 and maybe even expand the Erasmus programme into a general purpose European civil service corps. Everything short of actual combat should be considered, because \u201cannexing Greenland\u201d is a symptom of American fascism, and others will follow.<\/p>\n

A generous interpretation of how Europe\u2019s political leaders have spent the past year is that they have been playing for time to prepare. Donald Trump is pushing away allies and offending a lot of them. More and more are seeing him act as a bully–and the European Union is taking steps.<\/p>\n

Donald Trump\u2019s foreign policy statements have unsettled many\u2014in the USA as well as foreign nations. He is believed by many to be more unpredictable than Richard Nixon. Many have rightly pointed out that he often acts as a bully.<\/p>\n

Greenland<\/strong><\/p>\n

There is also something referred to as the \u201claw of unintended consequences.\u201d There are consequences for the USA, Europe, and elsewhere that have and will occur because of Donald Trump\u2019s statements and actions.<\/p>\n

Consider, for one example, that after his reelection, Donald Trump stated that the United States needed to have Greenland for defense and economic purposes. Not only did that offend the governments of Denmark and Greenland, the Danish government then announced that it would greatly increase the amount of money it would spend on the defense of Greenland.[i]<\/a><\/p>\n

On January 7, 2025, Donald Trump refused to rule out military or economic actions to acquire Greenland.[ii]<\/a> The next day, European leaders warned they would not tolerate an attack on Greenland and that the continent of Europe was strong.[iii]<\/a>\u00a0… One longer term consequence of Donald Trump\u2019s rhetoric may be that the Europeans could decide that Greenland would be a useful place to conduct surveillance on the US and Canada.<\/p>\n

Additionally, it is also possible that Greenland could be used as a base to 1) interfere with US military satellite communications, 2) possibly neutralize some US military moves in Greenland, or even 3) a place to also launch an attack against the US, Canada, and\/or even the UK. The Bible teaches about a great power who will be destroyed by its friends, who become enemies (Lamentations 1:1-2)\u2014some statements by Donald Trump are pushing \u201cfriends\u201d (NATO allies) into being enemies. …<\/p>\n

The USA will be attacked by \u201cfriends\u201d consistent with the following:<\/p>\n

\nThat was full of people!<\/p>\n

How like a widow is she,
\nWho was great among the nations!<\/p>\n

The princess among the provinces\u00a0Has become a slave!<\/p>\n

2<\/sup>\u00a0She weeps bitterly in the night,
\nHer tears are on her cheeks;
\nAmong all her lovers
\nShe has none to comfort her.<\/p>\n

All her friends have dealt treacherously with her;
\nThey have become her enemies. cf. Lamentations 1:1-2).<\/p>\n

Notice the one who was \u201cgreat among the nations\u201d will be conquered by friends, who will become enemies.<\/p>\n

The USA was prophesied to be \u201cgreat\u201d in Genesis 48:19 and is considered by international sources to be great among the nations of the world today.[v]<\/a><\/p>\n

Yes, the Bible teaches about a great power who will be destroyed by its friends, who become enemies (Lamentations 1:1-2). Donald Trump offending the Europeans is leading to that.<\/p>\n

Europe had basically no military interest in Greenland before Donald Trump.<\/p>\n

Now, it is putting troops there and looks like it will use or build military bases there.<\/p>\n

And prophetically, a more militarized Greenland could play a role in the prophesied destruction of the United States (cf. Daniel 11:39; Isaiah 10:5-11).<\/p>\n
