The US-Israeli air war against Iran has expanded, engulfing Lebanon, with Israel responding to strikes by Hezbollah, while Tehran fired missiles and drones at Israel, Gulf states and a British air base in Cyprus.<\/p>\n

The US \u2060military said Kuwait’s air defences had mistakenly shot down three American F-16 fighters during an Iranian attack.<\/p>\n

All six crew members were safely recovered.<\/p>\n

A US base and a power station in Kuwait were also targeted, in what was the most dramatic escalation for the small Gulf country in decades, after the 2003 US invasion of Iraq and Baghdad’s attempt to take over Kuwait in 1990.<\/p>\n

Blasts also rang out over the Gulf cities of Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Doha and Manama as Iran targets the United States’ Gulf allies after the killing of its supreme leader in US-Israeli strikes. https:\/\/www.rte.ie\/news\/middle-east\/2026\/0302\/1561123-iran-us-world\/<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Here is one perspective about some of what has happened the past few days and ramifications:<\/p>\n

A favourite tactic of war is to try to decapitate the enemy leadership. While such strategies might work in certain contexts, in the Middle East, they have proven to be a disastrous choice.<\/p>\n

For sure, the assassination of an enemy leader might give a quick boost of popularity amid war. Certainly, United States President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are basking in the limelight of their perceived \u201csuccess\u201d in assassinating Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.<\/p>\n

But killing an 86-year-old man who had already been planning his succession due to his ill health is not that much of a feat considering the overwhelming firepower that the US and Israel together possess. More importantly, eliminating him does not necessarily mean that what follows would be a leadership or a regime that would accommodate Israeli and US interests.<\/p>\n

That is because leadership assassinations do not lead to peaceful outcomes in the Middle East. They can open the door for much more radical successors or for chaos that leads to violence and upheaval.<\/p>\n

A brief glance at recent history shows that whenever Israel and the US have tried the idea of leadership \u201cdecapitation\u201d in various conflicts in the region, the results have been disastrous. In the case of Iraq, its leader Saddam Hussein was captured by US forces and handed over to allied Iraqi forces who executed him. This ended a regime that was openly antagonistic to Israel, but it also opened the doors for pro-Iranian forces to take power. https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/opinions\/2026\/3\/2\/ayatollah-ali-khameneis-assassination-will-likely-backfire-here-is-why<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Would A Limited Nuclear War In The Middle East Produce A \u201cNuclear Winter\u201d That Would Cause A Global Famine?<\/h2>\n

February 26, 2026 …<\/p>\n

Scientists have warned us that even in a scenario in which only a very limited number of nuclear weapons are used, a \u201cnuclear winter\u201d would be produced which would last for multiple years. Global food production would plummet and hundreds of millions of people would starve to death. So a limited nuclear exchange would not just be catastrophic for the particular nations that are directly involved. Ultimately, it would be a global cataclysm of epic proportions. …<\/p>\n

Since the 1980s, it has been well understood that a full-blown nuclear war between the United States and Russia would produce a nightmarish \u201cnuclear winter\u201d which could potentially kill\u00a0billions of people<\/a>\u2026<\/p>\n

But what about a limited nuclear war?<\/p>\n

Would that cause a \u201cnuclear winter\u201d too?<\/p>\n

A study that was conducted in 2014 envisioned a limited nuclear exchange in which each side detonated just\u00a050 15-kiloton weapons. \u00a0Yes, the \u201cnuclear winter\u201d that would be produced would not be as severe as one that would be produced by a full-blown war between the United States and Russia, but it would still be horrific. \u00a0In fact, the authors of the study concluded that\u00a0we would see<\/a>\u00a0\u201cfive to 10 consecutive Years Without a Summer and more than a decade of significantly reduced crop yields\u201d\u2026<\/p>\n

The effects would be similar to what happened after the greatest volcanic eruption in history, the 1815 Tambora eruption in Indonesia. The cooling from this eruption triggered the infamous Year Without a Summer in 1816 in the Northern Hemisphere, when killing frosts disrupted agriculture every month of the summer in New England, creating terrible hardship. Exceptionally cold and wet weather in Europe triggered widespread harvest failures, resulting in famine and economic collapse.<\/p>\n

However, the cooling effect of that eruption only lasted about three years. Cooling from a limited nuclear exchange would cause five to 10 consecutive Years Without a Summer and more than a decade of significantly reduced crop yields. Killing frosts would reduce growing seasons by 10-40 days per year for five years at midlatitudes. Global precipitation would fall 6% during the first five years and be reduced by 4.5% 10 years later, resulting in a crippling increase in regional droughts. Over the Asian monsoon region, including the Middle East, the Indian subcontinent, and Southeast Asia, annual rainfall would fall by 20-80%, so that even the \u201cwinner\u201d of the nuclear war between India and Pakistan would experience devastating famine from the failure of the life-giving monsoon rains.<\/p>\n

Destruction of ozone would lead to another global calamity. As smoke in the stratosphere absorbed sunlight, the stratosphere would heat by 30 degrees Celsius (54\u00b0F). In the hot stratosphere, chemical reactions would destroy ozone, causing global ozone losses of 20-50% over populated areas. Ultraviolet light would increase by 30-80% over the midlatitudes, likely causing widespread damage to human health, agriculture, and terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Just think about those numbers for a moment.<\/p>\n

They are based on the detonation of just 100 nuclear warheads.<\/p>\n

Overall, there are more than 12,000 nuclear warheads in our world today. …<\/p>\n

We are currently in the midst of a historic global food crisis. \u00a0Hundreds of millions of people around the world go to bed hungry every night, and the lack of food has become particularly severe in deeply impoverished nations\u00a0such as Somalia<\/a>\u2026<\/p>\n

By now it should be apparent to everyone\u00a0that this is just the beginning<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Israel has nuclear weapons, which it could use. Iran may or may not have one, but it does have materials to make what is called a ‘dirty bomb.’<\/p>\n

A dirty bomb is a weapon that contains radioactive materials\u2013it is NOT the same as a nuclear bomb and it is not nearly as devastating\u2013though it can render an area unsafe to live in for a long time.<\/p>\n

Many war stories end with\u00a0hunger<\/a>\u00a0wreaking havoc on significant portions of a population. In Christian theology, the Biblical \u201cfour horses of the apocalypse<\/a>,\u201d believed by many in early modern Europe to presage the end of the world, symbolized invasion, armed conflict, and famine followed by death. They suggest the degree to which people have long recognized how violence causes starvation. Armed conflict disrupts food supplies as warring factions divert resources to arms production and their militaries while destroying the kinds of infrastructure that enable societies to feed themselves. Governments, too, sometimes use starvation as a weapon of war. …<\/p>\n

Today, armed conflict is the most significant cause of hunger.\u00a0According<\/a>\u00a0to the United Nations\u2019 World Food Program, 70% of the inhabitants of war- or violence-affected regions don\u2019t get enough to eat, although our global interconnectedness means that\u00a0none of us<\/a>\u00a0are immune from high food, fuel, and fertilizer prices and war\u2019s supply-chain interruptions. Americans have experienced the impact of Ukraine\u2019s war when it comes to fuel and grain prices, but in regions like\u00a0sub-Saharan Africa<\/a>, which depend significantly on Eastern European foodstuffs and fuel, the conflict has sparked widespread hunger. …<\/p>\n

America\u2019s longest war in\u00a0Afghanistan<\/a>\u00a0deepened that country\u2019s poverty, decimating what existed of its agriculture and food distribution systems, while\u00a0displacing<\/a>\u00a0millions. And the effects continue: 92% of Afghans are still food insecure and nearly\u00a03 in 10<\/a> Afghan children will face acute malnutrition this year. …<\/p>\n

Now, Gaza is a major humanitarian catastrophe …<\/p>\n

Hunger as a Cause of War<\/strong><\/p>\n

Famine is the nightmarish version of the gift that just keeps giving. Hungry people are\u00a0more likely<\/a>\u00a0to resort to violence to solve their problems. War-afflicted Yemen is a case in point. In that country, the U.S.\u00a0funded and armed<\/a>\u00a0the Saudi military in its air strikes against the Houthi-led rebels that began in 2015 and went on for years (a role now\u00a0taken over<\/a>\u00a0by my country). One child under five is still estimated to die every 10 minutes from malnutrition and related causes there, in large part because war has so decimated the country\u2019s food production and distribution infrastructure.\u00a0Since<\/a>\u00a0war first struck Yemen, the country\u2019s economy has halved, and\u00a0nearly 80%<\/a>\u00a0of the population is now dependent on humanitarian aid. A direct consequence of the unrest has been the flourishing of Islamic extremist groups like the Houthis.\u00a0Countries<\/a>\u00a0facing hunger and food instability are, in fact, more likely to be politically unstable and experience more numerous protests, some of them violent.<\/p>\n

Nowadays, I find that I can\u2019t help imagining worst-case scenarios like the\u00a0risk of nuclear war<\/a>, a subject that has\u00a0come up<\/a> in a threatening manner recently in relation to Ukraine. https:\/\/www.counterpunch.org\/2024\/07\/08\/war-and-famine\/<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
