The Aspirations of Those Claiming Descent from the Ten Lost Tribes<\/strong><\/p>\n

This pattern stands in marked contrast to the situation of millions of people worldwide who believe they descend from the ten northern tribes of Israel, which were exiled by Assyria in 722 BCE and subsequently assimilated among the nations. Biblical prophecies repeatedly assure the restoration of these scattered remnants and their reunion with Judah. …<\/p>\n

Contemporary genetic testing has encouraged many to pursue these claims. Analyses sometimes reveal markers associated with ancient Levantine populations, Cohanim lineages (priestly descent from Aaron), or other indicators suggestive of Israelite ancestry. Such findings lead individuals to conclude that they possess Jewish heritage, perhaps even from one of the dispersed tribes.<\/p>\n

The Barrier That Ancestry Alone Cannot Overcome<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yet a significant obstacle persists. These claimants, while earnest in their search for roots, continue to follow spiritual traditions that diverge from normative Judaism. …<\/p>\n

Genetic evidence may confirm ancestral connection, but it does not alter the essential requirement. DNA, while informative, fails to open the lock without spiritual alignment. …<\/p>\n

The Prophetic Key: Teshuvah and Covenant Alignment<\/strong><\/p>\n

The key that opens this gate is teshuvah (repentance, literally \u201creturn\u201d to God and the covenant). Deuteronomy 30:1-10 provides the central paradigm. When the people, in the midst of exile and reflection upon the blessings and curses, return to the Lord their God with all their heart and with all their soul, Hashem pledges to gather them from among all the nations, to circumcise their hearts so they may love Him fully, and to enable them to observe all His commandments.<\/p>\n

The prophetic key is not scientific proof or ancestral discovery alone. There are two main issues to discuss here.<\/p>\n

The first is, yes, to be a Jew spiritually is not a matter of descent. The Apostle Paul wrote:<\/p>\n

28 For he is not a Jew who is one outwardly, nor is circumcision that which is outward in the flesh; 29 but he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the Spirit, not in the letter; whose praise is not from men but from God. Romans 2:28-29)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

But the other is that the determination of the identity of the ten lost tribes is a matter of descent.<\/p>\n

The Bible shows that promises were made to each of the sons of Israel in Genesis 48 and 49.<\/p>\n

Those were physical promises for physical descent.<\/p>\n

While humans can argue about who is a Jew, God knows who the descendants of Israel are.<\/p>\n

Although the majority of Israelite-descendants appear Caucasian, being or not being Caucasian (or living or not living in Europe) does not make one an Israelite nor a Gentile\u2014being a physical Israelite has to do with parental descent, not physical appearance. <\/span><\/p>\n

Additionally, since there are non-Caucasian people who married into to the Israelite tribes, they and their descendants (irrespective of their outward appearance), are normally also recipients of the same blessings and cursings the Bible refers to. …<\/span><\/p>\n

God knows\u2014and HIS WORD CAN BE TRUSTED.<\/p>\n

God Knows<\/strong><\/p>\n

Some have pointed to various scriptures about descendants of Israel being \u201cscattered\u201d (Psalm 44:11; Jeremiah 50:17; Ezekiel 34:6), as proof the identities of the tribes could not be possible. Yet, God says He will gather them from the nations (Isaiah 43:5-6, 54:7, 56:8; Jeremiah 23:3, 31:10; Ezekiel 36:22-25; Hosea 1:11; cf. Psalm 106:47). While some gathering will happen during the millennium, it should be pointed out that many of the prophecies to the tribes had to be fulfilled before the millennium (e.g. Genesis 49:10,17,23-24,27)\u2014so they are not all future.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, in addition to Amos 9:8-10 where God says He will be able to sift the children of Israel to bring them where He wanted them to be, notice the following:<\/p>\n

11<\/sup> \u2018For thus says the Lord GOD: \u201cIndeed I Myself will search for My sheep and seek them out. 12<\/sup> As a shepherd seeks out his flock on the day he is among his scattered sheep, so will I seek out My sheep and deliver them from all the places where they were scattered on a cloudy and dark day. (Ezekiel 34:11-12)<\/p>\n

So even though \u201cthey were scattered on a cloudy and dark day,\u201d this does not mean that they would not fulfill God\u2019s plan. God clearly says He can find them. And that is also plainly taught in the New Testament (cf. (Revelation 7:4-8).<\/p>\n

All Tribes Returned?<\/strong><\/p>\n

As far as the tribes scattering to faraway lands goes, notice something from the apocryphal Hebrew writing of around 2,000 years ago called 2 Esdras:<\/p>\n

40<\/sup> Those are the ten tribes, which were carried away prisoners out of their own land in the time of Osea the king, whom Salmanasar the king of Assyria led away captive, and he carried them over the waters, and so came they into another land.<\/p>\n

41<\/sup> But they took this counsel among themselves, that they would leave the multitude of the heathen, and go forth into a further country, where never mankind dwelt, (2 Esdras 13:40-41)<\/p>\n

Reportedly, this journey eventually took many Israelites through a narrow gap in the Caucasus called the Dariel Pass or the Pass of Israel to the land of Arsareth in the steppes of what is now Crimea.<\/p>\n

In the Middle Ages, a rabbi at Tschufut Kaleh (Chufut-Kale of Crimea) showed a missionary of Hebrew descent named Stern an ancient roll that had the following:<\/p>\n

\u201cI am Jehudi, the son of Moses, the Son of Jehudi the Mighty<\/em>, a man of the Tribe of Naphtali, which was carried captive with the tribe of Simeon, and other tribes of Israel, by the Prince Shalmaneser, from Samaria, during the reign of Hoshea, King of Israel. They were carried captive to Halah, to Habor, which is Cabul<\/em>, to Gozah, and to the Chersonesus, which is the Crimea<\/em>. Cherson was built originally by the father of Cyrus, and afterwards destroyed, and again rebuilt, and called Crim<\/em>.\u201d[i]<\/a><\/p>\n

In the 12th<\/sup> century, a rabbi Benjamin, son of Jonah, was determined to see the world from Tudela, Spain. He spent several years traveling. When visiting in Persia and in the Arabian Peninsula, he was convinced he ran into a small remnant of descendants of the \u201clost\u201d Israelites as he wrote:<\/p>\n

And there are men of Israel in the land of Persia who say that in the mountains of Naisabur dwell four of the tribes of Israel, namely, the tribe of Dan, the tribe of Zebulun, the tribe of Asher, and the tribe of Naphtali, who were included in the first captivity of Shalmaneser, King of Assyria, as it is written (2 Kings xviii, ii): \u201cAnd he put them in Halah and in Habor by the river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes.\u201d[ii]<\/a><\/p>\n

Regarding some in Arabia, Benjamin of Tudela also wrote:<\/p>\n

These tribesmen are of the tribes of Reuven and Gad, and the half-tribe of Menasseh.[iii]<\/a><\/p>\n

The tribes went to faraway lands as certain historical accounts support. And most of their descendants did leave Persia and Arabia.<\/p>\n

Yet some have asserted that because there are biblical and non-biblical references to a few individuals of some of the \u2018lost tribes\u2019 being in the Judea area, that the majority of those who left returned to the Israel\/Palestine area.<\/p>\n

But that is not so. The fact that most did not return is also widely known by Jewish scholars.<\/p>\n

For example, in 1918, Joseph Herman Hertz, who was the Chief Rabbi of the United Hebrew Congregations of the British Empire, reportedly stated:<\/p>\n

The people known as Jews are the descendants of the Tribes of Judah and Benjamin, with a certain number of the Tribe of Levi. So far as is known, there is not any further admixture of other tribes. The Ten Tribes have been absorbed among the nations of the world.[iv]<\/a><\/p>\n

Yes, as the Bible prophesied (e.g. Amos 9:9; Hosea 1:5-6) the remaining tribes ended up in many nations. The reality is that the bulk of those descended from the \u201clost tribes\u201d tribes went away, but did not return, to Judea.<\/p>\n

Scientific Controversies: DNA<\/strong><\/p>\n

Dr. James Tabor wrote:<\/p>\n

Clearly the populations of Britain, the United States, and northwestern Europe are very mixed. What we maintain is that significant portions of the ancient Israelites ended up in these areas. Identifying them, at this time, is not scientifically<\/em> possible.[v]<\/a><\/p>\n

If there are enough advances in science, it may one day be possible to have scientific certainty of the modern identifications. Yet, now, we have biblical certainty that there must be descendants of Jacob who received the promised blessings (Genesis 48). And that biblical certainty, along with various facts, helps us to be able to identify them.<\/p>\n

One scientific controversy related to the \u201clost tribes\u201d has to do with Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) testing.<\/p>\n

Some say lack of DNA evidence disproves Israelite connections to many lands, including in Europe.<\/p>\n

However when, \u201cdealing with European population palaeogenetics, no one can evade the question of the limitations that are intrinsic to the field of aDNA.\u201d[vi]<\/a> \u201cThe peopling of Europe by modern humans is a widely debated topic in the field of modern and ancient genomics\u201d.[vii]<\/a> So the scientific reality is that there are limits of usefulness of DNA. Dominant and recessive genes, mutations, interbreeding, other factors, and likely unknown factors impact the usefulness of DNA\u2014scientists do realize there are DNA limitations related to descent.<\/p>\n

The science associated with DNA is changing and, in time, there may be more specific markers or sub-markers that will prove to be totally useful in this endeavor.<\/p>\n

That being said, much of the DNA in Europeans came from the Fertile Crescent, [viii]<\/a> which includes the Levant. Scientific research once confirmed that \u201ca demic diffusion spanning the entire European continent from the Levant\u201d with differences between \u201cEastern Europe\u201d and \u201cthe West\u2019.[ix]<\/a><\/p>\n

A \u201cdemic diffusion\u201d refers to populations spreading out. \u201cThe Levant\u201d is a geographical term historically referring to a large area in the Eastern Mediterranean region of Western Asia. Western Asia is also known as the Near East.<\/p>\n

Notice also:<\/p>\n

DNAs \u2026 to haploid group H, the most frequent in Europe and one that is common in the Near East \u2026<\/p>\n

MtDNA lineages cluster into distinct groups \u2026 cluster H \u2026 This cluster \u2026 is the most frequent in Europe and is also common in the Near East.[x]<\/a><\/p>\n

So, it is not surprising with \u201chaploidtype\u201d that \u201cMiddle Eastern populations generally connect much closer to typical northwestern European samples such as the Irish and Danes.\u201d[xi]<\/a> (MtDNA stands for mitochondrial DNA.)<\/p>\n

DNA experts realize that DNA is not sufficient to be considered the disqualifying determinant in ancestry. Note the following related to Jews:<\/p>\n

In recent decades ever-increasing efforts and ingenuity were invested in identifying Biblical Israelite genotypic common denominators by analysing an assortment of phenotypes, like facial patterns, blood types, diseases, DNA-sequences, and more. It becomes overwhelmingly clear that although Jews maintained detectable vertical genetic continuity along generations of socio-religious-cultural relationship, also intensive horizontal genetic relations were maintained both between Jewish communities and with the gentile surrounding. Thus, in spite of considerable consanguinity, there is no Jewish genotype to identify<\/strong>.[xii]<\/a><\/p>\n

Furthermore, related to \u201cdemographic history,\u201d \u201clarge surveys of mtDNA variation in Europe have thus far failed to reveal any such patterns.<\/strong>\u201d[xiii]<\/a><\/p>\n

A 2022 DNA study found that while there are genetic connections of modern Jews to those of the Middle Ages, there was considerable genetic diversity in some. [xiv]<\/a><\/p>\n

Scientific American<\/em> reported:<\/p>\n

Genetics is a probabilistic science, and there are no genes \u201cfor\u201d anything in particular… When it comes to ancestry, DNA is very good at determining close family relations such as siblings or parents, and dozens of stories are emerging that reunite or identify lost close family members (or indeed criminals). For deeper family roots, these tests do not really tell you where your ancestors came from.[xv]<\/a><\/p>\n

Hence, scientists tend to realize that DNA is not as reliable of an ethnic marker as many people believe. Even some who have reported DNA connections for the tribes of Israel, have found significant variations (e.g. reference [xvi]<\/a>). The reality of descent, and not DNA, is consistent with the assertions in this book on the identity of the tribes of Israel.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Despite that, there are also many who falsely assert that the Jews in Israel are the wrong race and that they are not from the three tribes of Judah, Benjamin, and Levi. Yet, their false assertions can be easily disproved.<\/p>\n

Some have tried to claim that the Jews were black, hence Jesus was black. Because of that claim, I also located some photos of 1st century A.D. coins\u2013the century Jesus was executed in. After General Titus conquered Jerusalem in 70 A.D., Emperor Vespasian<\/span> issued coins\u2013the back side of which shows conquered Jews:<\/p>\n

Notice that the coins clearly show that the Jews were not black Africans. The two captured men have traditionally Caucasoid, not Negroid, hair. The inscription on the second coin is in Latin as Iudea Capta<\/em> which translated into English as \u201cJudaea Taken.\u201d These coins are clear evidence that the Jews of the first century\u2013like Jesus\u2013were not black Africans. The Jews were Caucasians.\u00a0If most Jews of Jesus\u2019 time were black, the coins would have been expected to portray that\u2013but they do not. These are absolute historical proof, no matter what color people may think the ancient Egyptians were or what their DNA was.\u00a0More information on that can be found in the article: Were the Ancient Tribes of Israel Black? In the letter, you will note that the Chief Rabbi also mentioned his view that the other ten tribes were absorbed into other nations. While that is basically correct, the fact is that they ended up dominating and forming various nations.<\/p>\n

Contrary to naysayers and various others, there is evidence which backs up Church of God positions on the descendants of the tribes of Israel. Numerous prophecies related to them have been fulfilled and numerous others will be fulfilled.<\/p>\n

Admissions from the Jewish Encyclopedia<\/strong><\/p>\n

Although it opposes Anglo-Israelism, notice that the old Jewish Encyclopedia<\/em> admits the Hebrew scriptures support many parts of it (bolding<\/strong> mine):<\/p>\n

The theory of Anglo-Israelism is based upon an extremely literal interpretation of the Old Testament<\/strong> \u2026 and by an application of texts brought together from the prophecies about Israel \u2026 It is pointed out that while in the prophecies Israel will change his name (Hosea, i. 9), be numberless (ibid.<\/em> ii. 1), dwell in islands (Isa. xxiv. 15) with colonies and be the chief of the nations (Micah, v. 8), Judah will be a byword (Jer. xv. 4). The \u201cisles\u201d (Isa. xli. 1, xlii. 4), to which Israel was banished, were to be north (Jer. iii. 12) and west (Isa. xxiv. 15) of Palestine, and to be in a cold climate, since it is said: \u201cHeat nor sun will smite them\u201d (Isa. xlix. 10). It was further prophesied that the isles would become too small for Israel (Isa. xlix. 19) and that Israel should be a nation and company of nations (Gen. xxxv. 11). It would, therefore, have colonies (Isa. xlix. 20, liv. 3), so that it might surround the nations (Deut. xxxii. 7-9) and be above them all (Deut. vii. 6, xiv. 2, xxviii. 1). \u2026 The Anglo-Israelites triumphantly ask, \u201cWhat nation save England corresponds to all these prophetic signs?\u201d<\/p>\n

In further confirmation it is pointed out that one of the tribes of Manasseh was to become an independent nation (Gen. xlviii. 19): the United States obviously represents Manasseh. Both Ephraim and Manasseh shall \u2026 (\u201cpush the people together\u201d) in the countries into which they spread (Deut. xxxiii. 17). …<\/p>\n

The promise that Israel \u201cshall possess the gates of his enemies\u201d (Gen. xxii. 17, xxiv. 60) is taken to be fulfilled in the possession by England of Gibraltar, Malta, Heligoland, Aden, and Singapore. Finally, it was prophesied that Israel should bear another name (Isa. lxv. 15) and speak another tongue (Isa. xxviii. 11). All these characteristics of Israel, as distinguished from Judah, are fulfilled, it is contended, in England, its colonies, and the United States.[i]<\/a><\/p>\n

Yes, those of us who believe that biblical prophecies will literally come to pass will accept proper understanding of \u201cAnglo-Israelism.\u201d<\/p>\n

Again, notice that a respected Jewish source admits that, well, if you actually believe the Bible, then yes, there is support for Anglo-Israelism.<\/p>\n

Hopefully, you do, or will consider, that the Bible is the inspired word of God and the prophecies in it are coming to pass.<\/p>\n

Abraham\u2019s grandson, Israel had 12 sons. The modern nation of Israel is comprised of only two of those sons \u2013 Judah and Benjamin. Many of the children of Levi are also included in that mix, but Levi is no longer included as one of the sons of Israel, as Levi became God\u2019s inheritance. So what happened to the other ten sons, or tribes, of Abraham\u2019s grandson? Are they lost? Many think so. Would it be possible to trace the migration of the other ten sons of Israel to know where they went? What about prophecy? Is there anything in the Bible that might indicate who the modern tribes of Israel are based on the fulfillment of prophecy? Interestingly, the Jewish Encyclopedia (which is a publication of the tribe of Judah) has a listing claiming the identity of the \u201cLost Ten Tribes\u201d, known as the \u201cdiaspora\u201d in the Bible, can\u2019t be known today. And yet, they quote the prophecies that identify at least some of those tribes and then continue to name the nations that fulfilled those prophecies! Thus, identifying the Lost Ten Tribes of Israel! There are also many prophecies concerning all the tribes of Israel and the promises God made to them. Prophecies that have yet to be fulfilled. Is it possible that God knows where they are?
