DW: France says ‘non’ to Brexit delay

While much of the press has been focused on what Boris Johnson and the UK Parliament will do related to Brexit, many seem to have overlooked the fact that the remaining European Union countries would need to agree in order to give the UK the three month extension that many in the UK seem to want.

Notice the following reported by the German press:

France says ‘non’ to Brexit delay

8 September 2019

France’s patience with the United Kingdom’s failure to find an acceptable deal to leave the European Union is wearing thin, according to Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian.

“In the current circumstances, it’s no. … We are not going to go through this every three months,” Le Drian told the CNEWS broadcaster.

“The (British) say that they want to put forward other solutions, alternative arrangements so that they can leave,” he added, referring to Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s promises to find a way out of the backstop mechanism for Northern Ireland, the main sticking point.

“But we have not seen them and so it is ‘no’… let the British authorities tell us the way forward,” he said. “Let them take responsibility for their situation… They have to tell us what they want.”

Britain has so far been given two extensions to its proposed withdrawal from the EU. Brexit was originally scheduled for March 29 this year, exactly two years after Article 50 of the EU Treaty, which regulates a country’s withdrawal, was triggered in 2017.

Britain is currently due to leave the bloc on October 31, and Johnson has pledged to leave without a deal if necessary, insisting earlier this week that he would “rather be dead in a ditch” than ask for another delay.

But the UK parliament last week passed a law blocking the country from leaving the EU without a deal, and mandating that the prime minister seek another Brexit extension if no deal were passed through parliament. https://www.dw.com/en/france-says-non-to-brexit-delay/a-50345291

One problem that the UK has is that it does not seem to believe that previous comments from the EU about NOT changing the deal are valid. The EU has repeatedly stated that it will not change the deal that the UK Parliament three times failed to approve.

Now, lets go back nearly six months to see EU attitudes about this:

13 March 2019

The European Union presented a unified front after UK lawmakers snubbed concessions and voted down a Brexit deal. Bloc leaders said the UK must justify itself if it wants an extension.

Leaders of the European Union closed ranks on Wednesday, lamenting Britain’s rejection of a Brexit deal while cautiously entertaining the idea of an extension. …

Chief EU Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier said Brussels had nothing more to offer and must now brace for the possibility of a messy divorce. “The EU has done everything it can to help get the Withdrawal Agreement over the line,” Barnier tweeted. “The impasse can only be solved in the #UK. Our ‘no-deal’ preparations are now more important than ever before.”

European Commissioner for Economic and Financial Affairs, Taxation and Customs Pierre Moscovici said the spurned deal was the “last chance” for a Brexit deal and that EU authorities were relatively prepared in terms of customs arrangements in case of a no deal exit. “It is time now for the British to say what they want, now that they’ve said what they don’t want,” Moscovici told France 2 television.

Before the vote, EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker told Britain, “There will be no third chance.” He said any extension would have to be endorsed by the 27 remaining EU nations and would have to end before EU elections in May. https://www.dw.com/en/brexit-vote-european-union-closes-ranks-in-response/a-47883473

March 13, 2019

“I am against every extension — whether an extension of one day, one week, even 24 hours — if it’s not based on a clear opinion of the House of Commons for something,” said the European Parliament’s chief Brexit official, Guy Verhofstadt. “Please make up your minds in London, because this uncertainty cannot continue.”

Barnier said “again the House of Commons says what it does not want. Now this impasse can only be solved in the U.K.”

EU Economic Commissioner Pierre Moscovici said Tuesday’s vote increased chances of a British departure that is “disorderly, brutal, like a cliff,” including sudden new customs rules and trade chaos that companies have warned about for months.

The European Parliament was poised to approve measures later Wednesday to deal with the immediate hardship of a “no-deal” Brexit. It was set to back emergency rules to ease the burdens on roads and airports if all trucks suddenly needed to be checked.

The U.K. Parliament has now twice rejected the withdrawal agreement that May spent the best part of two years negotiating with the EU, and the bloc insists there will be no more talks.

Moscovici said “the train has passed two times” and the EU will not renegotiate the deal before the scheduled Brexit date of March 29.

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas issued a warning to British lawmakers.

“Whoever rejects the (Brexit) agreement plays with the welfare of their citizens and the economy in a reckless way,” he said. https://www.apnews.com/0732fc070df44f26b74dab8f207855dd

EU Council President Donald Tusk sent out the following tweet via Twitter earlier this year:

While there is no divine “special place” of punishment nor reward for Brexiters, Donald Tusk’s comments reveal the intense hatred for Brexit and the UK by many in the EU leadership.

Although I have shown the following before, it still seems to give a significant European view of Brexit:

The above is how Brexit was shown on an English-language test in a school in Germany (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/may/04/project-fantasy-german-exam-question-debates-brexit-reality).

The UK keeps hoping for a deal better than one that the EU is prepared to provide. The EU can turn down any request for extension if it wants and many in the UK do not seem to have realized that.

The EU does NOT want any positive precedent for any nation leaving the EU.

It may budge slightly, but it simply does not want Brexit to be a ‘success’ and at this stage it is unclear what the UK Parliament wants.

That has further upset the Europeans.

The EU will suffer from Brexit and its inflexibility will be a factor. Notice some comments below from former Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras:

Former Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras warned on the contagion effects of a no-deal Brexit, saying that stronger economies in the EU were at a greater risk due to their close relationship with the U.K.

Speaking to CNBC’s Steve Sedgwick at the Ambrosetti Forum in Cernobbio, Italy, he said that a British exit without a formal deal should be avoided at all costs.

“I think the damage will be huge and it will be for all of us. Of course for the U.K. and the U.K. citizens first of all, but not only for them,” he said Saturday.

“I think the huge damage will be if there is a no-deal Brexit for all the European member states and especially for the strong states, their economies are very connected with the U.K. economy.”

A no-deal Brexit — where the U.K. has to trade by WTO rules with no transition period in place — is seen as economically damaging by many. https://www.cnbc.com/2019/09/07/alexis-tsipras-no-deal-brexit-damage-will-be-huge.html

The UK, and because of statements from Donald Trump, the USA, will be blamed for damage caused by Brexit.

Anti-Anglo-American sentiment and a sense of betrayal by the UK (see also Europe feels betrayed by UK and USA: This will not end well) has also made the Europeans feel that the UK must suffer, even if the EU will have some negative economic consequences.

While economic concerns are high now for the UK, what will ultimately happen will be more than economically brutal.

Notice the following:

The G7 Biarritz summit and Mr Johnson’s visits to Paris and Berlin had raised hopes that the British prime minister was prepared to engage in substantive negotiations, offering the kinds of detailed plans that could form a starting point for talks. But by Friday EU diplomats were complaining that UK negotiator David Frost has done quite the opposite in discussions with the European Commission in Brussels: instead of putting new plans on the table, Britain has used its face time with the EU team to take existing offers away. In negotiating rounds on Wednesday and Friday, Mr Frost reiterated Britain’s determination to scrap plans for the Irish backstop, which aims to prevent a hard border in Ireland, while offering nothing to replace it. He then pushed to unwind commitments given by Theresa May on co-operation with the EU after Brexit. …

The UK has also suggested it would like to de-emphasise the importance of working together on security and defence issues compared with the language in Mrs May’s deal.

While all those changes concern the EU and UK’s planned future relationship, rather than the text of its exit treaty, they have raised alarm bells in capitals about what kind of partnership Britain wants, with eastern European nations queasy about the idea of a reduced UK commitment to joint security. 09/07/19 https://www.ft.com/content/158b9234-d0b9-11e9-99a4-b5ded7a7fe3f

So, the Brits want to be less involved with a future European military. This concerns some in the EU, which in turn, will get the Europeans to decide that they need to invest more in military matters.

Bible prophecy reveals that Europe will end up with “a great army” (Daniel 11:25). More and more we are seeing factors reported in the news that look to be pushing Europe in that direction.

As far as that military and the UK goes, Bible prophecy also reveals that, eventually, the military that will rise in Europe will turn against the UK (cf. Daniel 8:24-25; Isaiah 17:3).

Brexit and the fate of Northern Ireland, Gibraltar, the UK, and the USA On April 29, 2017, 27 of the nations of the European Union agreed to certain guidelines for the negotiations with the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland which gave its notice to leave on March 29, 2017. These guidelines are contrary to what the UK wants. Does the EU intend the UK to pay a price for leaving the EU? What does Spain want? What does the Republic of Ireland want? Will Northern Ireland and Gibraltar eventually fall under European control? Will the UK and USA be conquered? What does the Bible teach? Dr. Thiel answer these questions and more in this video.
