Many nations are not pleased with the latest tariffs and increased tariff threats from the Trump Administration:

Trump tariffs live updates: US import taxes will hit levels not seen in nearly 100 years

August 7, 2025

President Donald Trump began levying higher import taxes on dozens of countries Thursday, just as the economic fallout of his monthslong tariff threats has begun to create visible damage for the U.S. economy.

The import taxes will reach a level not seen in the U.S. in almost 100 years, with Americans expected to pay an average of 18.3% more for imported products. That’s the highest rate since 1934, according to the Budget Lab at Yale, a nonpartisan policy research center.  …

  • The countries are impacted by the tariffs: More than 60 countries and the European Union face tariff rates of 10% or higher. Products from the EU, Japan and South Korea are taxed at 15%, while imports from Taiwan, Vietnam and Bangladesh are taxed at 20%. Trump signed an executive order Wednesday to place an additional 25% tariff on India for its purchases of Russian oil, bringing the combined tariffs imposed by the United States on its ally to 50%, to go into effect later this month.
  • Trump has used tariff threats to exert political pressure: Trump has directly tied Brazil’s 50% tariff on many imported goods to the trial of his embattled ally, former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, who is currently under house arrest. The White House has placed the tariff rate on U.S. imports from Canada at 35%, saying Canada had failed to “do more to arrest, seize, detain or otherwise intercept … traffickers, criminals at large, and illicit drugs.” https://apnews.com/live/trump-tariff-news-updates-8-7-2025

Trump is using tariffs to encourage jobs and manufacturing industries to return to America, among other political goals.

Separately on Wednesday, he threatened to raise the tariff on imports from India to 50%, unless that country stopped buying Russian oil. He also threatened a 100% tariff on foreign-made computer chips, to push tech firms to invest more in the US. …

The overall average US tariff rate is at its highest in almost a century, thanks to a range of other industry-specific taxes affecting products such as vehicles and steel.

The duties that came into effect on Thursday were first announced in April. …

Export-dependent economies in South East Asia are among the hardest-hit.

Manufacturing-focused Laos and Myanmar face some of the highest levies at 40%. Some experts said Trump appears to have targeted countries with close trade ties with China. …

Switzerland has said it will hold an extraordinary meeting on Thursday after its officials were unable to reach a deal with the US. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cx23jmvn5yzo

President Donald Trump on Wednesday said he could announce further tariffs on China similar to the 25% duties announced earlier on India over its purchases of Russian oil, depending on what happens. https://www.newsmax.com/world/globaltalk/donald-trump-tariffs-china/2025/08/06/id/1221566/

Despite Brazil’s exports facing one of the highest tariffs imposed by Trump, the new U.S. trade barriers look unlikely to derail Latin America’s largest economy, giving Lula more room to stand his ground against Trump than most Western leaders.

Lula described U.S.-Brazil relations at a 200-year nadir after Trump tied the new tariff to his demands for an end to the prosecution of right-wing former President Jair Bolsonaro, who is standing trial for plotting to overturn the 2022 election.

The president said Brazil’s Supreme Court, which is hearing the case against Bolsonaro, “does not care what Trump says and it should not,” …

He also said he was planning to call leaders from the BRICS group of developing nations, starting with India and China, to discuss the possibility of a joint response to U.S. tariffs. https://www.newsmax.com/politics/lula-tariffs-trump/2025/08/06/id/1221536/

A controversial investment pledge forming part of the EU-US trade deal will need to be honoured by the EU or 35% blanket tariffs will be applied to the bloc, US President Donald Trump has warned. …

Asked on Squawk Box what teeth there were in the investment pledge element of the deal, Trump said, if it didn’t happen, “then they pay tariffs of 35%”.

Trump said that the investment pledge was one of the reasons he had dropped tariffs to a blanket 15% rate, so if it is unfulfilled then higher tariffs will click back in. https://www.euronews.com/my-europe/2025/08/05/trump-threatens-eu-with-35-tariffs-if-600bn-investment-pledge-unfulfilled

The Trump administration has given some trade partners, including India and China, longer to cut deals.

The US president has yet to announce whether he will extend a 12 August deadline for reaching a trade agreement with China that would forestall earlier threats of tariffs of up to 245%.

India also has no broad trade agreement with Trump.

On Wednesday, Trump signed an executive order that could increase India’s tariff rate from 25% to 50% over its continued purchase of Russian oil. Washington has given the country 21 days to respond.

These tariffs, according to Indian exporters, will severely hamper their ability to compete with countries facing lower rates. https://www.euronews.com/2025/08/07/us-president-donald-trumps-sweeping-global-tariffs-go-into-effect

China has blasted the US over its decision to impose “unsustainable” tariffs on Brazil, introduced by President Donald Trump as a response to the prosecution of former President Jair Bolsonaro and continued cooperation within the BRICS economic group.

In a statement on Wednesday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Beijing “firmly supports Brazil in safeguarding its national sovereignty and national dignity,” and “opposes unwarranted external interference in Brazil’s internal affairs.”

He added that China backs Brazil in “resisting the bullying imposition of tariff measures” and intensifying cooperation among Global South countries, particularly through the BRICS framework.

Wang also held a phone call with Celso Amorim, a senior adviser to Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, telling him that “using tariffs as a weapon to suppress other countries violates the UN Charter, undermines WTO rules, and is both unpopular and unsustainable.” https://www.rt.com/news/622617-china-backs-brazil-us-bullying/

India said it will continue buying Russian oil despite President Donald Trump’s threat to impose an additional 25% tariff, which would raise the total tariff on Indian imports to the United States to 50%.

Meera Shankar, a former Indian ambassador to the United States, told DW that India would not change its stance “under threat” of sanctions. https://www.dw.com/en/trump-tariffs-new-levies-hit-eu-japan-south-korea/live-73550668

Tariffs, sanctions, economic threats, and policies from the Trump Administration are pushing nations away from trading with the USA.

There is even a new term, ABUSA, which means anywhere but the United States of America (see ABUSA–Anywhere But the USA for trade–ECB wants independence from America).

The EU is talking about diversifying its “trade relationships.” In other words, the Europeans are looking to trade more with other nations than the USA. And the BRICS+ nations of Brazil and China are looking at more cooperation with each other.

There is an expression that “the enemy of your enemy is your friend.” The USA is turning friends into enemies, and that is consistent with biblical prophecies (e.g. Lamentations 1:1-2).

There will be many unintended consequences to these tariffs, including inflation in at least aspects of the economy.

Notice some items in my book available at Amazon Kindle: Unintended Consequences and Donald Trump’s Presidency: Is Donald Trump Fulfilling Biblical, Islamic, Greco-Roman Catholic, Buddhist, and other America-Related Prophecies? as well as Amazon print Unintended Consequences and Donald Trump’s Presidency: Is Donald Trump Fulfilling Biblical, Islamic, Greco-Roman Catholic, Buddhist, and other America-Related Prophecies?:

Donald Trump’s foreign policy statements have unsettled many—in the USA as well as foreign nations. …

The Bible teaches about a great power who will be destroyed by its friends, who become enemies (Lamentations 1:1-2)—some statements by Donald Trump are pushing “friends” (NATO allies) into being enemies. …

The Bible is clear that there will be problems in Europe (Daniel 11:41-43), yet it also shows that Europe will undergo several reorganizations (Revelation chapters 16-18), and the two reorganizations in Revelation 17:12-13 specifically will not turn out well for the USA (cf. Daniel 11:39) or the Arab world (cf. Daniel 11:40-43). …

European leaders have been working for years to establish a new reserve currency for the world, partially with the intent to remove the USA dollar from its current position as a reserve currency.

Those in Russia, Iran and some of the Arab lands, along with nations such as Brazil and India have discussed plans for the removal of the dominance of the USA dollar in global trade as well. Many are now working on that, along with China, in what is called the BRICS alliance. While Donald Trump did not cause all of this, an unintended consequence of the use of sanctions in the Trump-Pence Administration (as well as by the Biden-Harris Administration) is that more nations are looking to bypass the dollar. …

Since many are now questioning the role of the USA dollar as the world’s reserve currency, more are looking into other currencies as well as gold.

Gold will set records in U.S. dollar terms. …

When the U.S. dollar totally collapses people all around the world will consider that even if the euro (or something similar) is strong, having a more gold-backed currency would be safer.

The collapse of the USA dollar will shake a lot of the world’s confidence in non-gold backed currencies. The Europeans do not have to have a perfect currency, only one that is perceived to be in better shape than the USA dollar or various other currencies. …

The USA and its dollar are at serious risk. …

Unintended Consequences

While Donald Trump seems to believe that his policies are best for the United States, notice some unintended consequences of them: …

  • Pushing tariffs and sanctions on other countries is contributing to the rise of the final time of the Gentiles (Luke 21:24; Ezekiel 7:24).
  • Pushing tariffs and other policies that foreign nations do not like is contributing to other nations looking to bypass the USA dollar, as well as trade more with each other and less with the USA. This will further push various globalist’s moves forward without the USA. This is also helping set the stage for the coming European Babylonian Beast to dominate international trade. …
  • Pushing against Europe’s unity is encouraging the Europeans, which are prophesied to have unity difficulties (cf. Daniel 2:41-43), to try harder to unify, which will happen after at least two reorganizations (Revelation 17:12-13).
  • By breaking political norms and acting like a ‘strong man’ this will help Europeans being more accepting of their beast ‘strong man’ (Revelation 13:1-10; 17:13).
  • Donald Trump’s statements will help promote the rise of stronger European leaders like Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg.
  • Although, overall, the European nations have not paid for their defense to the amount they have suggested they would, pressuring them to spend more will 1) encourage them to be independent of the USA and 2) put Europe in a position where it has a great army (Daniel 11:25), many ships (Daniel 11:40), and access to nuclear weapons (cf. Deuteronomy 29:23-25; Isaiah 9:19-21;Ezekiel 6:6), which will help it conquer the USA, which is the military power with the strongest fortresses (cf. Daniel 11:39).

Since the above was published, gold has set records in US dollar terms multiple times. And more countries are looking seriously about bypassing the US dollar because of tariffs, sanctions, and other economic issues.

Statements and policies by the Trump Administration have strained relations between the USA and Europe.

Related to that, we put out the following video: Should Europe Still Consider Itself a US Ally?

And while some think that European attitudes will not harm the US, they are wrong.

Europe will one day reorganize (Revelation 17:12-13), end up with a great army (Daniel 11:25) with many ships (Daniel 11:40), and will one day conquer the strongest military power in the world (Daniel 11:39)–that will be the end of the US and its British descended allies.

The Bible also says that Europe will one day dominate international trade (cf. Revelation 17 and 18).

It is trying to set that up now.

Notice the following from my article 25 items to prophetically watch in 2025:

8. Trade

Not all warfare is militaristic. There is also economic warfare.

This often involves trade.

The major use of sanctions, mainly pushed by the USA, has been continuing.

This is affecting trade and pushing trade away from the USA. But also encouraging the Anglo-nations to try to increase trade with each other.

Back in 2008, I posted the following:

In the spirit of accommodation and personal interest, many of the “standards” of the European Union will be adopted by the USA, Canada and Mexico, as well as by nearly all of the countries of the world. The Arab nations will most likely agree with many of the standards as they seem to be destined to form a brief end-time alliance with the Europeans (The Arab World In the Bible, History, and Prophecy).

However, over time, it will become increasingly clear that the British will be in more agreement with the Canadians and Americans and that the European Union in more agreement with the Mexicans than the EU will have with the English-speaking nations.

Trade wars and/or serious trade disputes will most likely arise.

The Brits will ultimately decide that they are more supportive of the Americans and Canadians. They will be so much more supportive that they will end up in a trading agreement with them (with the Australians and New Zealanders probably also becoming part of that agreement).

The EU will decide that Mexico and the rest of Latin America are in more agreement with it and thus make some type of serious trading agreement with most (or all) of Latin America. The Vatican will also have influence here as Latin America is highly Roman Catholic.

The Europeans and Americans, however, will continue to have military agreements, though many will be tense about them. (Thiel B. A Combined EU & North American Trade Block Coming? COGwriter.com, March 3, 2008) …

The reelection of Donald Trump will motivate many to trade with each other because of his threats of tariffs, etc.

For a time, Babylon will dominate world trade:

2 And he cried mightily with a loud voice, saying, “Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and has become a dwelling place of demons, a prison for every foul spirit, and a cage for every unclean and hated bird! 3 For all the nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth have become rich through the abundance of her luxury.” (Revelation 18:2-3).

While ‘Babylon’ will not fully reign in 2024, with the USA pulling out of trade deals and/or wishing to change them, steps are occurring that are pushing Europe to dominate trade (watch Trade Wars: Are COG warnings coming to pass?).

The final time of the Gentiles is approaching. We are seeing BRICS, the Global South, the EU, and others working on ways to trade and not have to deal with the descendants of Ephraim (UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand) and Manasseh (the USA).

The Europeans will work with many nations to secure stronger trade agreements.

Yes, the above is occurring. Europe has also been proposing to create or at least change world trade (see EU proposing to set standards for a new (or substantially changed) international trading organization and European Union working on trade and military expansion). The BRICS nations and others are working on ways to trade that does not involve the USA.

Regarding how the international trade situation will end up, earlier this year the The Continuing Church of God put together the following video on our Bible News Prophecy YouTube channel discussing various views and scriptures about that:

14:49

Trade Wars – and the Winner will be …

US President Trump imposed tariffs on a global scale. Those tariffs were imposed on friend and foe alike. It seems as if President Trump is no respecter of nations. But how will this work out for the United States? Will these tariffs result in other nations drawing closer together that have had rather cold, and even not so cold, relations in the past? Will global tariffs result in trade wars? Were the events which are happening predicted by any in the Continuing Church of God? Is Europe drawing closer to China? Is Europe drawing closer to Latin and South America? With the exception of a few of America’s allies, is the net result of these tariffs a worldwide scramble to create new alliances and new trading partners to the exclusion of the United States? What will be the future result of these new alliances? Many of the nations that are now seeking new alliances were just recently America’s allies. They were her friends. Dr. Thiel brings to light the fate of America and her allies at the hands of her former friends, as revealed in the book of Lamentations. As we rapidly approach the end times listen in as Dr. Thiel brings to light world events. Then listen as he shines the light of Bible prophecy directly on the questions raised from these world events.
