The current Hebrew year, 5782, began on Rosh Hashanna one month ago, beginning a new shemittah (sabbatical) year. Most people believe that the shemittah has implications only for farmers based in Israel however in Biblical times, all debts, except those of foreigners, were to be remitted. One Israeli economist has chronicled a correlation between the seven-year shemittah cycle and major economic events. If his theory is correct, the world is about to enter a major crisis.
Shemittah and economic crisis
Rafi Farber, an Israeli economist and financial journalist who blogs and videos under the pen The End Game Investor, combines Torah knowledge with financial wisdom. This dual-discipline revealed a remarkable correlation.
“Every seven years on the Shemitta there is a debt reset for the entire world,” Farber explained. “This begins on Rosh Hashanna which is the New Year for the world that is marked by Jews because we are a kingdom of priests that represent the world to God. The Jewish New Year is actually Passover.”
As a student of economy, Farber noted highlights in history that were economic landmarks.
“The most famous recent landmark was 2008, 14 years ago or two shemittah cycles. This was, of course, the global financial crisis. First of all, let me state that this is NOT the year 5782. The year is closer to 5992. 1900 years ago, the Jews intentionally distorted their calendar to try to point prophecies in Daniel chapter 9 to Simon Bar Kochba and away from Jesus the Christ.

Jewish Year 5779 or 5990?
According to the Jewish ‘Seder Olam Rabbah’ the period from sunset 9 September 2018 to 29 September 2019 is the year 5779 Anno Mundi (age of the world). However, the Jewish Encyclopedia, secular scholars, and modern Jewish experts have all claimed that the count is off between 164 to 200 plus years. Are we closer to the year 5990 than 5779 since Adam and Eve left the Garden of Eden? Why would the Seder Olam be off by so much? Does any of this have anything to do with deceit and pointing to the false ‘messiah’ Simon Bar Kochba? Was the Messiah supposed to come after 4000 or 6000 years? Does Daniel 9:26 clearly point to Jesus? Dr. Thiel refers to Jewish accepted and other sources to answer these questions? Secondly, what about the so called Shemitah year?
Before answering that, let’s get some scriptural background.
The first day of the seventh month (Ethanim/Tishri) of the Hebrew calendar, which we call the Feast of Trumpets, was considered the beginning of the civil year. This is similar to how the first month (Nisan) was considered to be the beginning of God’s sacred year (cf. Exodus 12:2).
The beginning of each month for ancient Israel was to be marked with the blowing of trumpets per Numbers 10:10.
Every seven years there was a rest for the land–starting with the first year the children of Israel came into the promised land –and every seven years thereafter:
1 And the Lord spoke to Moses on Mount Sinai, saying, 2 “Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them: ‘When you come into the land which I give you, then the land shall keep a sabbath to the Lord. 3 Six years you shall sow your field, and six years you shall prune your vineyard, and gather its fruit; 4 but in the seventh year there shall be a sabbath of solemn rest for the land, a sabbath to the Lord. You shall neither sow your field nor prune your vineyard. (Leviticus 25:1-5)
10 “Six years you shall sow your land and gather in its produce, 11 but the seventh year you shall let it rest and lie fallow, that the poor of your people may eat; and what they leave, the beasts of the field may eat. In like manner you shall do with your vineyard and your olive grove. (Exodus 23:10-11)
The land rest helped the land become more productive as well as provided assistance to the poor.
According to many of the Jews, the claimed Shemitah year runs from sunset September 6, 2021 through sunset September 25, 2022. Which was the beginning of the Feast of Trumpets in 2021 and then ending with the next one in 2022.
However, the Jews have a problem counting years as that is NOT the year 5782, but more like approximately 5991 (see Does God Have a 6,000 Year Plan? What Year Does the 6,000 Years End?).
That being said, this claimed Shemita year has been accepted by the Messianic Jew Jonathan Cahn and certain other Protestants.
Some see economic and other disasters.
The idea of disasters coming from/during a Shemitah year was popularized eight or so years ago by Jonathan Cahn, who is perhaps best known for his book The Harbinger. I looked into the timing of this before and DO NOT BELIEVE THAT starting with sunset on September 6, 2021 a Shemitah year began, thus believe any claims based upon that are irrelevant.
Jonathan Cahn was wrong about what he taught would/might happen at the end of the last one (see September ‘convergence’: a harbinger of potential disaster?)
I also never accepted Jonathan Cahn’s belief that the Shemitah was from Trumpets 2014 to Trumpets 2015 (and denounced him for his inaccuracies there; e.g. 6000 years up and Jesus to return in 2016?)–but it seemingly helped him sell books.
I do NOT believe we are in a Shemitah year at this time. I suspect that the last one ran from sunset September 18, 2020 through sunset September 6, 2021. This coincided a bit with the COVID situation.
As far as Protestants go, let me report, that years ago, I saw an interview on CBN by Protestant Pat Robertson of Jonathan Cahn that was first broadcast 02/05/2013.
The interview screen at one point showed something that resembled two Power Point slides, apparently from Jonathan Cahn or one of his books. The first slide had the following information:

So, the above was a prediction of a possible global collapse at the end of a year that was likely NOT the Shemitah year.

Now if by tribulation, Jonathan Cahn meant the Great Tribulation, I wrote that it was not at all possible to begin then.
In September of 2015, he seemed to cautiously ‘double-down’ on his prediction as he stated:

Of course, that did not happen.
Before he was proven wrong on some of this, the well-known Protestant Pat Robertson said:
God…has ordained this young man as His prophet…Jonathan…
Is Jonathan Cahn God’s prophet as Pat Robertson stated?
No, he is not. If Jonathan Cahn is any type of a prophet, I would have to say that he is a false prophet.
Jonathan Cahn does not meet the New Testament criteria, plus his errors and misunderstanding of various matters disqualifiy him (to learn more about prophets, please see the article How To Determine If Someone is a True Prophet of God and/or watch the video also titled How to determine if someone is a true prophet of God).
WND also called Jonathan Cahn a ‘watchman’ (see WND claims ‘Harbinger Man’ is a ‘watchman’), but he was most certainly not God’s watchman. However, God does use watchmen (see Go, Set a Watchman).
1 But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction. 2 And many will follow their destructive ways, because of whom the way of truth will be blasphemed. 3 By covetousness they will exploit you with deceptive words; for a long time their judgment has not been idle, and their destruction does not slumber. (2 Peter 2:1-3)
Jonathan Cahn needs to publicly repent before it is too late. Various Protestants need to stop promoting him as a prophet.
Jonathan Cahn wrote a book on the Shemitah, then when it was, in my view quite wrong, he updated it.
The 2018 updated book is titled: The Mystery of the Shemitah Updated Edition: The 3,000-Year-Old Mystery That Holds the Secret of America’s Future, the World’s Future…and Your Future! The back cover of the book states:
WHAT WILL HAPPEN NEXT? … Understanding this seven-year pattern is essential for understanding the prophecy and the mysteries of the Bible that are still applicable today … the rise–and possibly the fall–of America can be linked to the year of the Shemitah.
If this was ESSENTIAL for Christians to understand prophecy, then in my view, Jesus would have so stated. Instead, He pointed to various signs in the Gospels as well as to the Book of Daniel.
It is not just Jonathan Cahn and some Jews who have pointed to a claimed Shemitah year for possible upheaval. Notice the following from State of the Nation:

While globalists will take steps, no, the “Great Reset” is not going to be complete in 2022 or 2023.
As far as Jubilee years go, according to the Bible, they are proclaimed on the Day of Atonement, which is nine days after the Feast of Trumpets (see also The Day of Atonement–Its Christian Significance). And while there have been economic troubles and cycles, claiming a super-shemitah for 2022 as the cause of them is not biblically-justifiable.
The actual “Great Reset,” meaning the rise of the Beast, will occur about the time of the start of the Great Tribulation and that will NOT be before 2025.
But, yes, changes will come–and we will see massive disasters–but they are not related to Jonathan Cahn’s or others latest ‘Shemitah year’ predictions.
Expect inflation and other economic problems over the next 12 months. This is NOT because of a claimed Shemitah year, but mainly because of sins and government mismanagement.
And as Jesus said:
