Commentary: And the bill always comes later
It is going to take awhile, but I may be able to eventually forget the North Carolina newspaper picture of a man, his smiling wife and their four young sons grouped together for a swearing-in photo. The shock of seeing this seemingly happy scene in relation to the story it highlighted resulted in a sigh and sudden blur of tears. Read more

In it, he mentions the return to our fellowship of Rees Ellis and many in Belgium and Northern France, public Bible lecture in Texas, Disaster Relief Fund for the Philippines, possible starvation in Eastern Kenya, Saratoga Family Weekend, LU degree approval, Newport Orgeon children's choir, media, world news items, and discusses real Philadelphia Christians.

Here are the items related to the Philippines and Kenya:

Disaster Relief Fund

As announced in last week’s The World Ahead, the Tungro Disease has destroyed this year’s rice crops in Maranding, Philippines. This has affected several Church families by taking away their sustenance. They are in desperate need of emergency assistance for survival. The Church is in the process of transferring money from the Disaster Relief Fund to provide support to these families for the next four months. We are also reviewing a request for assistance from our African brethren in Kenya because of food and water shortages there (see report below). If you want to contribute to the Disaster Relief Fund, please send your donations payable to the Living Church of God, to the Headquarters Office in Charlotte, and clearly label them on the memo line for the “Disaster Relief Fund.”

Kenya Update

Mr. Rod King, Africa Regional Director, informed us that the brethren in Eastern Kenya are facing starvation due to a severe drought in that part of the country. The Church’s United Kingdom Regional Office will send help for maize and beans to Kenya, but please also remember to pray for them fervently in this difficult time of need. Mr. Simon Muthama, Kenya Pastor, wrote, “The Embu and Sultan Hamud famine is going from worse to worst. In fact, I would say that the whole Province has been hit hard by the dry spell. Across the province, rivers have evaporated and residents spend most of their time searching for water. Food, too, is hard to get, and when it is available, it is beyond the reach of the majority of families that have exhausted their resources dealing with the challenges of the drought. The good news is that, despite the challenges of the drought and the famine threat, God’s Work in Embu and Sultan Hamud continues to show steady growth. Please remember the brethren in your prayers. We would appreciate it greatly if you would organize some relief food for them. This week I have plans to travel to the West. I will have a Bible study with the Ndhiwa and Kisii congregations, and Sabbath services in Kosele….”

The announcement related to the Rees Ellis and those in that area is also at the News of Those Once Affiliated with Global page.

Commentary: God has a plan to heal Michael Jackson
Deeply loved by his fans, Michael Jackson was nevertheless a polarizing figure. Will he be remembered for the wide-eyed exuberance he showed as a pre-teen sensation in The Jackson 5? Will he be lauded for "We Are the World" and its charitable outreach to starving Africa? Or will he simply be "Wacko Jacko"--a confused narcissist and alleged pedophile who literally seemed uncomfortable in his own skin, who by the end of his life had become a walking advertisement for the dangers of too much plastic surgery? Read more

When I was in my twenties, I would take the opportunity to visit my paternal grandmother on a Friday night. Commentary: A conspiracy of one
Imagine the horror!  A visit to one of the most moving memorials in Washington, DC shatters as a madman rushes in the front door of the building and starts shooting.  It must have been a terrifying few minutes as the gunman exchanged fire with security guards, one of whom was killed.  The shooter, gravely wounded, was subdued and taken into custody, as visitors to the memorial and workers looked on in fear and dismay. Read more

Here is one of the world news items:

Pride in Sin.  President Obama punctuated his first 100 days in office with a proclamation honoring Gay Pride Month (June in the United States). He noted, “LGBT [Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender] Americans have made, and continue to make, great and lasting contributions that continue to strengthen the fabric of American society… I am proud to be the first President to appoint openly LGBT candidates to Senate-confirmed positions in the first 100 days of an Administration" (USAToday.com, June 1, 2009). Yet, God commands, “Cry aloud, spare not; lift up your voice like a trumpet; tell My people their transgression, and the house of Jacob their sins” (Isaiah 58:1). God is not pleased with Israel’s increasing rejection of His ways (Isaiah 59:1-9). Although we must never harbor hatred or hostile feelings toward sinners themselves, as Christ gave the example (John 8:1-11), we must never forget how God views sin—and flee from that sin (1 Corinthians 6:18, Revelation 21:8). If we do not, God promises there will be serious consequences!

06/08/09 a.m. In his latest co-worker letter, Dr. Meredith wrote:

If your own heart and mind are open to real Truth, we can help you not only understand what is really going on, but why major changes are taking place in our society and how you and your loved ones may be protected and ultimately delivered. We take on the really big questions of life:  Why were you born? If you obey God, what will you really be doing for all eternity? Why don’t most human beings profess any form of Christianity—never have and never will—in this age? Are these billions of fellow humans forever “doomed”?

Most professing Christians are probably sincere. But, frankly, “mainstream” Christianity does not have a clue as to the genuine biblical answers to these questions. Are we in this Work of God “smarter” than others? No. But down through the ages, the Eternal God has always had a small remnant of people whose minds He has opened. Yet God’s true people have always been the “little flock” as Jesus described (Luke 12:32).

That is why Jesus Christ said, “Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it” (Matthew 7:13-14).

Jesus also said, “No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day” (John 6:44).

God’s Word tells us plainly that the vast majority of human beings are “blinded” (Revelation 12:9).That is why so very few—even among professing Christians—truly acknowledge the authority of the Bible and are willing to surrender their lives to actually do what the Christ of the Bible clearly commands. Yet the Holy Bible was inspired by Almighty God! The biblical prophecies for our times are now beginning to take place before our very eyes. God is real! He is now guiding the rise and fall of nations—and dealing with the American and the British-descended peoples in a specific way as we have described for years. But millions of churchgoers “wonder” why the Bible supposedly never mentions the United States or the British-descended peoples and what is specifically prophesied for us! Yet, as most of you subscribers know, we in this Work of the living God are continually telling you exactly what is beginning to happen to our peoples—and where it is leading! The great God of the Bible tells us, “Surely the Lord GOD does nothing, unless He reveals His secret to His servants the prophets. A lion has roared! Who will not fear? The Lord GOD has spoken! Who can but prophesy?” (Amos 3:7-8).

Frankly, dear friends and subscribers, if you want the real answers to life’s biggest questions, you really do need to “get involved” with this Work of the living God. No we are not “mainstream.” Yes, we will be harassed and persecuted before the Work is completed! Yes, you will need to have understanding, genuine faith and real courage to stand up and be willing to obey your Creator! However, the rewards are awesome.

But each individual who truly surrenders his or her life to truly follow the God of the Bible is promised to receive His help, His strength and His ultimate deliverance. Speaking of the true Church at the end of this age, God’s Word describes how Satan “persecuted the woman who gave birth to the male Child” (Revelation 12:13).

At a time when untold thousands are going to be persecuted or even martyred, what happens to this “woman” described in Revelation? “But the woman was given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness to her place, where she is nourished for a time and times and half a time, from the presence of the serpent” (v. 14).

Then Satan—just before he is cast into the bottomless pit at Christ’s return, comes roaring after the remaining lukewarm Christians to destroy them:  “And the dragon was enraged with the woman, and he went to make war with the rest of her offspring, who keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ” (v. 17).

Yes, the true people of God have always been those who are willing to obey God and actually “keep the commandments of God” as the above passage clearly states. Then, a couple of chapters later, the Apostle John was again inspired to describe the true people of God:  “Here is the patience of the saints; here are those who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus” (Revelation 14:12).

We in this Work are not inherently “better” than others! But, in His mercy, God has opened our minds. He has “called” us to understand the genuine answers to life’s biggest questions which so few truly understand. He has commanded us to preach His full Truth to you!

That is why this Work exists. That is why we never ask the public for money (have you noticed?). That is why we don’t have some man or woman “prophet” giving us ideas or doctrines totally contrary to the Bible. We use only the Bible as our source for Truth.

For we are on a mission to genuinely restore biblical Christianity. With God’s help, we are restoring the original teachings and practices of Jesus Christ, the early apostles and the original Church of God. As I hope you have noticed, we carefully document our articles and booklets with clear scriptural and historical references. We urge you to study the “original” Truth—from the Holy Bible itself (John 17:17). We challenge you to prove what we say out of your own Bible!

            How many others do that?

            Think!

We in this Work are also trying with all our hearts to obey one of Christ’s final commands, “‘Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.’ Amen” (Matthew 28:19-20).

So we do not talk merely about “sweet Jesus” or “giving your heart to the Lord” and then going on with “life as usual”! Rather, we explain in detail in Tomorrow’s World magazine, our dozens of free booklets and other publications, and in our in-depth Tomorrow’s World Bible Study Course, the entire purpose of Almighty God, the way of God and the real goal for which all Christians should be aiming.

We spend millions of dollars each year on television time, publishing the Tomorrow’s World magazine, the booklets we send out, the Tomorrow’s World Bible Study Course, the Internet, on international radio broadcasts and in Tomorrow’s World Presentations in many cities and on many other activities. We fearlessly proclaim the full Truth of the Bible, and we are powerfully warning our peoples of what is now beginning to happen in fulfillment of fearful biblical prophecies for our future. Then, we give the biblical answer to the “way of escape.” For this is the Work of the living God which He is doing at the end of this age!

Here is one of the world news items:

Economics—Lessons of Current History. What lessons can we learn from the collapse of the Zimbabwean dollar? As of mid-April 2009, the Zimbabwean dollar became a casualty of history. Hyperinflation and a nearly defunct system of national production led to the removal of the Zimbabwean dollar and its replacement with another currency in which the people still have faith—the U.S. dollar. Prior to the Zimbabwean dollar’s total collapse, national inflation was greater than 313 million percent per month (The Zimbabwean, April 15, 2009). How might this situation relate to Bible prophecy? The Bible warns about the consequences of falling into debt (Proverbs 22:7) and observes that creditors can rise up suddenly against those who have borrowed money (Habakkuk 2:7). Bible prophecies indicate that many nations will experience scarcity and hyperinflation as the end of the age approaches (Revelation 6:5-6) and that Israelite nations will be economically dependent on foreign nations (Deuteronomy 28:43-44). From Zimbabwe, we learn what can happen if total confidence is lost in a national currency—that to stabilize an out-of-control economy, the trusted currency of another nation could be adopted. Iceland is considering the same option with the euro. Could this also happen in Israelite nations sometime in the future?

Additionally, you should pray for the brethren in the Philippines:

Mr. Dayrell Tanner reported that he has been informed by Philippines Area Pastor Gideon Benitez that “the rice crop in Maranding area has been affected by some sort of disease that does not allow the rice to flower and thus no grain. He will give us an update on the needs of the brethren in that area, as they rely on rice for their living and sustenance.” Please continue to remember them in your prayers.

Here is one of the items about more of the historical accuracy of the Bible:

More Archeology Supports the Bible. Scientists from Israel’s Antiquities Authority recently unearthed a bone seal which dates from the First Temple period. “The name of the seal’s owner was completely preserved and it is written in the shortened form of the name, ‘Shaul,’ which is known from both the Bible (Genesis 36:37; 1 Samuel 9:2; 1 Chronicles 4:24 and 6:24) and from other Hebrew seals” (IsraelNationalNews.com, May 21, 2009). This is a clear reference to Israel’s first king, Saul. As time goes on and archeology advances, more and more discoveries are made that support the historical biblical record. This trail of evidence makes it increasingly difficult for “honest” skeptics to invalidate the stories and claims of the Bible. Jesus stated during His ministry, “For there is nothing hidden which will not be revealed, nor has anything been kept secret but that it should come to light” (Mark 4:22). As time goes on, God may allow many more of the secrets from antiquity to surface so that mankind is without excuses for rejecting God. As this happens, it should also increase our faith in the Scripture and the God who inspired it.—Scott Winnail

In it, he mentions baptisms, St. Luce (Martinique) FOT site, Australian tv issues, Barbados, the internet, world news items, and the value of hope. There is a report from Dr. Meredith on the Council Meeting where budget, doctrinal, LU, and other matters were discussed.

Here is one of the world news items:

Increased Borrowing. “The [U.S.] government will have to borrow nearly 50 cents for every dollar it spends this year, exploding the record federal deficit past $1.8 trillion under new White House estimates.” The current budgetary projections, based on the White House’s newly released budget, allow for a drop in the annual budget deficit of only $500 billion a year, four years from now (news.Yahoo.com [Associated Press], May 12, 2009). Where will this unprecedented borrowing lead? God clearly warned Israel thousands of years ago that it would become subject to foreign nations, because of its unchecked borrowing (Deuteronomy 28:43-44). God also reiterated this concept in Proverbs 22:7, “The borrower is servant to the lender.” Because of the covetous and lustful practices of many Israelite-descended nations, particularly the U.S., they are beginning to reap the consequences of those actions and are becoming increasingly indebted to foreign nations. The future does not bode well for nations that borrow more than they earn.

The second chatper of the Book of Habakkuk shows that at that time of the end that creditors will rise up and plunder (for more details about what is ahead for the USA and its Anglo-allies, please see Anglo - America in Prophecy & the Lost Tribes of Israel).

Here is one of the world news items:

The Pope and the Muslim World? For millennia, the Holy Land has been fought over by many peoples and nations and has truly been a “heavy stone” for all who solve the problems surrounding it (Zechariah 12:3). Tuesday, Benedict XVI became the first Pope to ever enter the Dome of the Rock and the Al-Aqsa Mosque on the Temple Mount. In comments to him, the highest-ranking Muslim cleric in Jerusalem, the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, stated, “We look forward for your holiness's effective role in putting an end to the ongoing aggression against our people, our land, and our holy sites in Jerusalem, Gaza and the West Bank.” This statement, appealing to the Pope to bring peace to Jerusalem and surrounding territories, fell on the heels of the Pope’s comments about a need for the establishment of a Palestinian state. The Pope also took opportunity to denounce anti-Semitism (www.goldcoastmail.com.au, May 12, 2009). During his current trip to the Holy Land, the Pope is laboring to build lasting bridges with both Arabs and Jews and gaining respect in the eyes of both, most importantly in the eyes of Arabs. Exactly how the next few years will play out with regard to Jerusalem remains to be seen. Geopolitical events must occur that allow a temporary peace to come to Jerusalem—a peace that will allow for the relatively safe reinstitution of religious animal sacrifices on the Temple Mount (see Daniel 9:27; 12:11).

Here is the part about being a Philadelphia Christian:

Real Philadelphia Christians: The book of Revelation describes Philadelphia Christians as having a strong desire to carry out the mission that Jesus Christ gave to His Church. According to the Scriptures, that mission involves preaching the Gospel of the Kingdom of God to this world and especially to the Israelite nations (Mark 1:14-15; Matthew 10:1-7), warning the world about the difficult times that will arise at the end of the age (Matthew 24, Mark 13, Luke 21), and preparing a people to reign with Jesus Christ in the coming government of God (Luke 1:17). However, as the name “Philadelphia” means “brotherly love,” true Philadelphians will also strive to follow Jesus’ admonition to “love one another” (John 15:12-17). They understand that showing unselfish, outgoing concern for others (versus sitting in judgment of others) is one of the distinguishing marks of a real Philadelphia Christian (John 13:34-35). Let’s all look for ways to show “brotherly love” to others.

Florida Update

Mr. Dexter Wakefield writes: The Tampa and Ft. Lauderdale congregations enjoyed a fine combined service in Kissimmee, Florida on the Sabbath of April 25 with 107 in attendance. There were also brethren from north Florida and south Georgia. Dr. Douglas Winnail gave the sermon on prophecy and the roles of the U.S. and Britain. The Florida regional ministerial and leadership conference at the Radisson Worldgate had a very informative agenda and was headed up by Dr. Winnail. I opened with a greeting and welcome, and then Dr. Winnail updated everyone on LCG statistics and a video was shown about the remarkable Work that is being done.

We then had a session on giving Public Bible Lectures. I gave a presentation on the Public Bible Lecture that I did in St. Lucia in March. Dr. Winnail gave a lecture on “Biblical Perspectives on Church Government.” Next came a discussion of “Biblical Perspectives on Church Leadership.” After lunch, there was a video by Mr. Ames on “Fundamentals of Preaching.” Also in the afternoon session, Dr. Scott Winnail and I gave a discussion of visiting and counseling tips. Dr. Winnail also discussed “Building a Congregation.” It was a full day!

Jamaica Update

Mr. Lascelles Fraser reports: Thirty-five members of the congregation in Kingston and eleven in Mandeville took the Passover on Tuesday evening, April 7. The attendance was very good both in Kingston and in Mandeville for the First Day of Unleavened Bread. Offerings on the Holy Days were 6% above last year. Our Annual General Meeting and a General Board Meeting were held on April 19 via a telephone “hook-up” with the Chairman for the meeting, Dr. Scott Winnail. Despite the economic situation, the brethren continue to be faithful. Income for the first four months is up 15.8% above the corresponding period last year.

Australasian Update

Ordination in Australia

Mr. Michael Gill writes: This past Sabbath, May 2nd, saw Mr. Graeme Hemphill ordained as an Elder by Evangelist Mr. Bruce Tyler and Melbourne Pastor, Mr. Michael Gill. Mr. and Mrs. Hemphill will transfer to Sydney in the next month or so to serve the brethren in the Sydney and Canberra regions. This will be the first time that the Sydney brethren will have a resident minister to serve them. Mr. and Mrs. Hemphill are well known to most of our Australian brethren, from their dedicated service at the Feast of Tabernacles sites, and to the Melbourne brethren as pillars in the congregation.

News from Sri Lanka

Mr. Zig Svalbe writes: God has called a small flock of 37 brethren centered about the capital city of Colombo. Many of the members find it very hard to find suitable employment because of difficult economic conditions and almost all employers demand work on the Sabbath. Mr. and Mrs. Zig Svalbe flew to Sri Lanka to keep the Passover and most of the Days of Unleavened Bread with the brethren in Colombo.

There has been little opportunity until recently to preach the Gospel in Sri Lanka and the small growth in numbers has mainly been as a result of family members talking to family members. So, over the last year we have advertised the Bible Study Course in the Sunday Times newspaper. This has drawn 90 requests and many of the respondents have returned test cards with good scores. With time, we expect that there will be some visit requests and, God willing, new members added to the congregation. Another challenge that we face is that a number of the respondents have asked if we could also provide Bibles, since they are generally not available in this Buddhist country.

News from Malaysia

Mr. Rajan Moses writes: At present, we are sending 400 copies of the Tomorrow’s World magazine per issue to South East Asia. Two hundred copies are sent to Malaysia, 100 copies are sent to the ASEAN region and another 100 to India. These magazines are sent to people who respond to the semi-annual letters and who frequently request the booklets and are doing the Bible Study Course.

Since July 2008, with our new email, lcgmalaysia@yahoo.com, we are now sending electronic copies of the Tomorrow’s World magazine and booklets to those who have Internet access. As a result, we now have more than 1,400 Internet subscribers. Malaysia, being an Islamic country, discourages any propagation of other religions through TV or radio. The Internet has now become the most useful tool to preach the Gospel.

Since July 2008 we have received 97 GOTOs. One person from Taiwan has read all the Church materials and now wants to be baptized. Another subscriber in Sri Lanka is in contact with us. A number of subscribers in Malaysia have also made contact for visits or questions.

The Church in Malaysia has an attendance of 78 members. There are two congregations, one in Kuala Lumpur and one in Bahau, 134 km apart. There are also two video groups: Kulim, Kedah and Johor Baru, Johor. Most of our members speak the Tamil and English languages.

Ten to 12 members attend the Wednesday evening Bible studies in Kuala Lumpur. In his Bible Studies, Mr. Moses has been covering material from one of the Living University courses—Principles of Christian Living. Most of our brethren cannot afford to take the Theology course and are happy they can learn from the weekly Bible study. On the first week of every month Mr. Moses also conducts the Living Leadership Course for the congregation in Kuala Lumpur.

More than 200 The Power of Prophecy DVDs have been sent to subscribers. We are already receiving good comments from those who have seen the DVDs. Five people are counseling for baptism in Kuala Lumpur and Johor Baru, plus one in Taiwan.

News from Indonesia

Mr. Arius Nusantara writes: The Indonesian Work has experienced significant growth. This is because we have developed a communication system through emails that enables our subscribers to have a closer contact with our office on a weekly basis. This is especially helpful, as browsing the Internet is very costly in Indonesia, and most cannot afford to stay online and read our material. We send three different e-mails each week. One commentary, one advertisement e-mail, and one short Bible lesson. Overall, we send out more than 3,000 e-mails each month. This communication has given us a dramatic increase in subscriber responses and requests.

Our subscriber list is steadily increasing, with a 50% increase in this past year. We are receiving monthly about 2,500 hits on our website. The translation into Indonesian has covered both audio and literature. We now have around 350 articles in the Indonesian language which we can send to subscribers. God has blessed the Work in this part of the world in so many ways. Our focus is to give better service for the subscribers through our website. Also, we plan to broadcast our online LCG Indonesia radio programs. Although we understand that very few people can access the programs now (due to the limited speed of Internet connection), we know this can be a good start for the following years!

News from New Zealand

Mr. Kinnear Penman writes: Just over 80% of the attendees in New Zealand are relatively new to God’s Truth and Church. It shows the effectiveness of the Tomorrow’s World broadcast as a tool through which God initially calls people. It also follows that congregational leaders still need quite a bit of development. The Tomorrow’s World presenters are providing programs which continue to draw excellent results. Each week we receive many favorable comments from people whose lives are positively enhanced by the teaching they are receiving.

We appreciate Headquarters support in providing the booklets and discs which are requested in great numbers. During April, we mailed out a total of 3,092 individual items of literature. This brings the year-to-date total to 11,108—an increase of 38% over the same four months of last year. God has been good to us and has provided us with a good income increase so far this year.

In 1993 I enlisted in the military. My decision was due in large part to the fact that my best friend Lawrence was already serving and stationed in Oklahoma. He travelled to our home town often. "Mazur, his two clients and a Sherpa guide were just two hours from the 29,035-foot peak... when they came across 50-year-old Lincoln Hall, who was left a day earlier when his own guides believed he was dead. Here is one of the world news items:

Confusion Among U.S. Christians. In a recent survey of “self-identified Christians” in the U.S., the Barna Research Group unearthed some interesting findings. First, 40% of respondents stated that Satan was not a “real” being, but rather just a “symbol” for evil. Only about 30% identified Satan as a real, evil being. Next, while nearly half of respondents stated emphatically that Jesus did not sin while on earth, 39% stated that He did sin while on earth, in direct opposition to the Scripture. Two-thirds believe that humans can be influenced by demonic forces, while an entire third believe that it is not possible for humans to be influenced by demonic forces. Only 55% of those surveyed had a negative view of organized witchcraft (“wicca”), while 40% did not have an opinion about wicca, even though it was described as “organized witchcraft.” When confronted with the statement that “the Bible, the Koran and the Book of Mormon are all different expressions of the same spiritual truths,” 41% of respondents agreed! (Barna.org, April 16, 2009). This recent research is sobering and also telling. According to the survey results, professing Christians differ greatly in their understanding of what the Bible really teaches. In fact, only 55% strongly agreed that the Bible is “accurate” in the principles it teaches. With this in mind, and the statistics on Satan and demons, is it any wonder that professing Christians today are deceived? Very few actually read and study the Bible on a regular basis (according to previous Barna research), and therefore have a very weak moral compass. God stated “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.” (Hosea 4:6). God speed the day when the “earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD as the waters cover the sea…” (Isaiah 11:9)

Of course, real Christians are not confused about this as we realize that Jesus did not sin, that there are demonic forces, and that the Bible is accurate.

It has been foretold that wasting disease and fever will, without question, occur at the time of the end.  “I also will do this to you [God speaking to the modern day descendants of ancient Israel]: I will even appoint terror over you, wasting disease and fever which shall consume the eyes and cause sorrow of heart” (Leviticus 26:16).

The modern day descendants of ancient Israel will be gripped in the end time by disease outbreaks and fevers. The word of God declares the end from the beginning, and it is sure!  Could the mutating pig virus be the beginning of the fulfillment of this clear biblical proclamation?

Terrors have already hit, to a degree, the USA and its Anglo-allies. Whether the swine-flu will be part of the wasting disease and fever that is prophecied will probably be known fairly soon. But even if it is not, wasting disease and fever are prophecied and will come to pass.

In his latest co-worker letter, LCG's RC Meredith wrote:

This world really is changing! With the greatest financial crisis in 60 years upon us, and with the election of many liberal (very liberal) Democratic politicians in the United States Congress and their control of the Presidency as well, the United States of America has undergone a genuine “sea change”—a truly major change which is beginning to affect every segment of our society and every corner of our nation. America will never be the same nation again. And many of the same political and economic changes will be affecting our friends in Britain, Canada, Australia and New Zealand as well.

As our political and financial world leadership continues to deteriorate—as our national morality sinks into an abyss—most people are beginning to become deeply worried. Even now, thousands are traumatized after losing their jobs, their homes—or both. Yet, above all people, we who understand the Truth should have a quiet confidence and sense of purpose. For as we see the prophetic events occurring which we have prophesied for so long, we should be deeply encouraged that the end of this human society is coming and that the inauguration of the Kingdom of God is coming soon!

For, as we have told you scores of times, this Work of the living Christ is the “advance guard” of a soon-coming World Government—the literal Government of Christ to be set up on this earth with Headquarters at Jerusalem. For Jesus Christ will return soon as “King of kings and Lord of lords” (Revelation 19:16).

Civil Violence in Thailand. Bangkok, Thailand is experiencing rioting related to the 2006 ousting of its Prime Minister. The military, which has the capability to quell the violence, is being very careful so as not to destabilize an already volatile situation. Violence and protests have included fire-bombing of police stations. To date, the king of Thailand has played a very low-key role and has chosen not to intervene. Supporters of the former Prime Minister accused the new Prime Minister of taking power four months ago through deceit and trickery (Stratfor.com, April 13, 2009; YahooNews.com, April 16, 2009). Proverbs states that people rejoice “when the righteous are in authority” (Proverbs 29:2). Although the situation in Thailand has not escalated to the level of civil war, it is serious and points to several aspects of Bible prophecy that are being fulfilled today. Jesus Christ warned that “wars and rumors of wars” would increase as the end of the age approaches (Matthew 24:6). The level of civil strife in Thailand could escalate as long as the king chooses not to act and intervene.

Here are the comments on reflection:

A Time to Reflect and Change: The Passover and the Days of Unleavened Bread provide us with an annual reminder of the important initial steps in God’s great Plan of Salvation. The Passover reminds us that Jesus Christ died for our sins. When we come to realize that Jesus paid the penalty for our sins, we must also take time to examine ourselves (1 Corinthians 11:28-32) and make every effort to eliminate from our lives any sins that God allows us to see. Our focus during the Days of Unleavened Bread should be on searching ourselves and eliminating any leaven (sins) that we find in our lives. To effectively carry out this process, we need to remember the biblical definition of sin—that “sin is the transgression of the law” (1 John 3:4, KJV). The Scriptures can help us identify sinful attitudes and actions in our lives if we read and meditate on the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20) and the spiritual intent of God’s instructions (Matthew 5-7; Romans 12 and Galatians 5). If we do not use God’s word as a guide, we can deceive ourselves by thinking that we are OK—because our thoughts and behaviors may not as bad as others’ in the world around us. However, God has called us to come out of this world (2 Corinthians 6:17) so we can be lights to the world (Matthew 5:14-16). The Passover period and the Days of Unleavened Bread are designed to help us in this vital process of reflection and change so we can become more like Jesus Christ.

Here is what Dr. Winnail wrote about forgiveness:

Can You Forgive? One of the most challenging things that we must do as Christians is to forgive someone who has offended us or hurt us. Jesus said that we must not only love our neighbors, but we must also show love to our enemies and those who have hurt us (Matthew 5:43-48). This involves being able to forgive—which means developing the mind of God and learning to use the gift of the Holy Spirit. The Bible reveals that God is abundant in mercy and is ready to forgive (Psalm 86:5). Jesus taught that if we do not forgive others—on a regular basis—then God will not forgive us (Matthew 6:14-15; 18:21-22). The Apostle Paul said we should “be kind to one another… forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you” and “do not let the sun go down on your wrath” (Ephesians 4: 32, 26). Real Christians should not hold grudges or nurse hurts—whether real or imagined. Instead, real Christians must learn to forgive. Jesus asked His Father to forgive those who crucified Him—Stephen made a similar request (Luke 23:34; Acts 7:60). If we are truly following in the footsteps of Jesus Christ, we must learn to do the same. As the Passover approaches, we need to carefully examine ourselves in this area of our lives (Matthew 5:21-24; 1 Corinthians 11:27-32). Is there someone we need to forgive? Is there someone to whom we need to apologize or from whom we need to ask forgiveness? The capacity to forgive is a Godly quality and one of the marks of a true Christian.

Here is one of the world news items:

Back To Your Roots, Rome!“Rome needs to rediscover its ‘soul’ as the cradle of civilization so as to face modern challenges, says [Pope] Benedict XVI… Rome must again appropriate her most profound soul, her civil and Christian roots” (Zenit.org, March 9, 2009). The Pope also stated in his speech that the Christian roots of Rome are what once made it the “model of civilization for the world.” The Pope closed his address by noting that Rome’s history demonstrates that “being united” is what allows for the overcoming of extreme difficulties in life. Bible prophecy reveals that, at the end of the age, the Catholic Church will again emerge to play a central role in world affairs, along with a Beast power that arises in Europe from the roots of the old Roman Empire (Revelation 17:18). The Scriptures state that a great world church led by an influential religious figure operating from Rome will exert a powerful influence on this end-time Beast power (Revelation 13, 18). It is sobering to watch the Roman Catholic Church moving again to take an increasing role in European and global politics.

Here is one of the world news items:

A Plague of Disobedience. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 3% of Washington, DC residents are living with HIV or AIDS. From 2006 to 2008, there was a 22% increase in the number of AIDS cases in the capital of the United States and every mode of HIV transmission is on the rise. In the 40-49 year-old age group, about one in 10 people has HIV or AIDS. AIDS is most prevalent among male homosexuals and I.V. drug users. It is also very prevalent among heterosexuals who are promiscuous—the more sexual partners a person has, the greater the risk of having HIV or AIDS (OneNewsNow.com, March 16, 2009). God warned millennia ago that Israel’s failure to keep His commands (like keeping sexual relations only within a faithful marriage relationship) would result in “wasting disease and fever,” which would consume the eyes and cause sorrow of the heart (Leviticus 26:16). One major result of AIDS is that it causes the body’s immune system to destroy or “consume” itself. It also leads to opportunistic infections that affect the eyes, the heart, and other vital body organs. HIV and AIDS are “totally” preventable if people keep God’s commandments. When Christ returns and the law goes forth from Jerusalem (Isaiah 2:3), and the knowledge of God covers the earth as the waters cover the sea (Isaiah 11:9), and all people really “live” by every word of God (Luke 4:4), diseases like HIV and AIDS will cease to exist!

Commentary: No religion???
On December 14, 2008 I traveled to the town of Terezin, Czech Republic with a German friend of mine...The experience was educational and sobering.  I had never visited a concentration camp before.  The cold stone walls seemed to speak of the anguish of the more than 140,000 prisoners, men, women, and children, enslaved here from 1939 to 1945.  Thirty-five thousand of them died here at Terezin... Read more

Here is one of the world news items:

Is Iran Galvanizing the Arab World? On March 6, Morocco cut off diplomatic relations with Iran, citing Iran’s actions to change the religious character of Morocco’s monarchy. This move was backed by Saudi Arabia. Morocco also denounced recent remarks by a former Iranian Interior Minister, who said that “Bahrain used to be Iran’s 14th province.” These recent remarks also put much of the Arab world into an uproar. Because of these remarks and Iran’s nuclear threat, many Arab nations led by Saudi Arabia are now on a diplomatic offensive against Iran. However, Arab nations led by Saudi Arabia are also treading carefully so as not to invite a Shiite backlash (Stratfor, March 7, 2009). Scripture makes it plain that, at the end of the age, a King of the South (a geographical reference from the point of Jerusalem) will arise on the world stage. This King of the South will lead a confederacy of nations (Psalm 83:5-8) that will attack the King of the North (see Daniel 11:40). Currently, there is no clear King of the South. However, events are taking place in the Arab world that may pave the way for the appearance of this future “king.” Through its “brazen” actions, Iran may be pushing much of the rest of the Arab world together.

Here is one of the world news items in this week's update:

Impending Harvest Failure in China. In the worst drought in half a century, China’s “wheat belt” is bracing for crop failures. Due to lack of rain and antiquated and wasteful crop irrigation, many farmers fear a wheat crop failure for the second year in a row. Because of the severe water situation, the Chinese government is chemically seeding clouds to increase chances of rain. The government has also earmarked some of its own “economic stimulus” funds for digging deeper wells for crop irrigation (Christian Science Monitor, February 11, 2009). If China runs low on food, the world’s most populous nation could make demands on the United States due to trade agreements (see Der Spiegel, February 11, 2009). As China continues to buy U.S. debt, the Chinese government could demand re-payment in U.S. wheat and other foodstuffs. Long ago, God warned His chosen people that “a nation whom you have not known shall eat the fruit of your land and the produce of your labor, and you shall be… crushed continually” (Deuteronomy 28:33). Bible prophecies warn that Israelite-descended nations will face impending catastrophes because they choose to ignore and disobey God. The United States and other Israelite-descended nations have put themselves into a position of “debtor” nations, and with this status will come the penalty of having to serve other masters. China could become one of those masters in the years ahead.

The USA is on shaky ground increasing its debt to China (see also Drought, Wheat, & China).

Here are two related world news items:

Christians Seen as “Mad”! In Great Britain, “Churchgoers are now ‘counter-cultural’ because their values are so opposed to prevailing behavior, claimed Dr Sentamu,” the second-highest cleric in the Anglican Church. “Meanwhile public sector workers now risk being sacked if they talk about religion in the workplace, under ‘equality and diversity’ rules.” Recently, a school secretary was suspended from her job for sending a private email, asking friends for spiritual support for a difficult situation with her daughter. A nurse was suspended without pay for two months after offering to pray for an elderly patient. A registrar was fired for refusing to take part in civil partnership ceremonies [apparently between same-sex couples], and a relationship counselor was sacked after refusing to give relationship counseling to same-sex couples (Telegraph, February 18, 2009). As time goes on and more and more evil is seen as “good,” living the life of a Christian will become increasingly difficult. Will we have the faith to stand up and bear our cross (Luke 14:27), or will we “faint in the day of adversity” (Proverbs 24:10) and deny Christ (Matthew 10:33)? We must make a habit of praying for all men, including our leaders. We must pray that God will allow laws to remain or be put into place that will allow God’s people to continue to “lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence” (1 Timothy 2:1-2).

Anti-Christian Retaliation in Higher Education. Following California’s recent constitutional revision defining marriage as between “one man and one woman,” Los Angeles Community College student Jonathan Lopez, a professing Christian, attempted to give a speech for his Public Speaking class. In the speech, Mr. Lopez shared some of his religious views, apparently well within the parameters of the assignment given by his instructor. During the speech, Mr. Lopez commented on his Christian views of marriage, at which point his instructor interrupted him, leveling profanity at him. When the instructor invited any students to leave that might have been offended by the speech, and none left, the instructor dismissed the class. The instructor later refused to grade the speech, stating “Ask God what your grade is,” and also threatened to expel the student. This instructor’s actions obstruct the student’s right of “free speech,” a U.S. constitutional right. They not only “constitute viewpoint discrimination but also comprise retaliation because he disagreed with Lopez’s religious beliefs” (Onenewsnow.com, February 16, 2009). In a nation that was built on the foundation of the Ten Commandments and on Judeo-Christian values, it is sobering to witness such overt discrimination against these same values. God warned that “in the last days perilous times will come…” a time in which many would be “despisers of good” (2 Timothy 3:1-3), a time in which people would call evil good and good evil (Isaiah 5:20). It appears that we are definitely in these perilous times.

This is similar to the theme of the documentary by Ben Stein last year called Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed (see Ben Stein’s Expelled). Freedoms of speech and religion are getting more and more restricted by governments and academia who are becoming more interested in their agendas than the truth.

02/24/09 p.m. Here is some news related to the work in the Spanish language:

This week we held the first Internet-based conference for the Spanish Work with more than 30 individuals from eleven countries participating on Sunday, 22 February, 2009. It was conducted by Dr. Douglas Winnail, Mr. Dibar Apartian, and Mr. Rod McNair from the headquarters building in Charlotte, North Carolina. Mr. Mario Hernandez and Mr. Tony Mora in California provided translation. Other participants were in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru, Puerto Rico, and Spain. Computer webcams allowed those involved to see as well as hear the sessions as they were delivered.

After greetings were exchanged online, the conference kicked off with a pre-recorded presentation by Dr. Meredith in which he reminded everyone of our mission and purpose. Additional conference topics included Church government, baptismal counseling, divine healing, holding public Bible lectures, Living University and other resources to build the Church of God. The conference was designed to provide those who are already guiding and shepherding the flock of God in these areas with the tools to do so more effectively.

The atmosphere was one of joy, enthusiasm for the Work of God and brotherly love. It was exciting for all involved to see how technology can assist the Church as it seeks to do the great Work set before God’s people in preparing the way for the return of Jesus Christ.

Living Youth Camp

Applications for LYC Voyageurs Adventure 2009 are now available! As mentioned in an earlier announcement, our normal summer camp location in the northwoods of Michigan is not available to us this year due to circumstances out of our control, but this opens up a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our teens and young singles to experience a wonderful adventure in one of the premier North American canoeing areas. To better manage this program, there will be two sessions to choose from that will overlap in the middle:

Session #1        Arrival Thursday, July 16 – Departure Sunday, July 26
Session #2        Arrival Thursday, July 23 – Departure Sunday, August 2

All young adult staff will need to arrive on Sunday, July 12, and may serve for either one or two sessions, depending on time and space availability. This is truly the adventure of a lifetime! You will see untamed breathtaking beauty, perhaps catch your own dinner, view wildlife up close and, most of all, develop lasting friendships with other teens in God’s Church. If you have ever thought about being a pioneer, this may be your one and only chance. It will be a challenge and may test your mettle, but in the end you will experience an indescribable inner reward. For further details go to www.youth-web.org

Here is one of the world news items:

Europe Reaches Out to the Middle East. “Germany’s foreign minister met Tuesday with Iraqi leaders in the latest high-level visit by a major Western nation that refused to take part in the 2003 US-led invasion but is now looking for ties and lucrative contracts. Frank-Walter Steinmeier, the first German foreign minister to come to Iraq in more than 20 years, arrived one week after Nicolas Sarkozy visited Baghdad, the French president calling on other European countries to follow his lead ‘to support the peace’… Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari said the visit showed both countries were eager to resume their ‘historical relations’” (AP, February 17, 2009). Long ago, God prophesied through King David that, in the end times, a “confederacy” would form between many Arab nations and Germany (Assyria), or possibly a group of nations lead by Germany (Psalm 83:5-8). It may be that this “confederacy” that will come against the Israelite-descended nations will be the same group that will make a seven-year peace accord or covenant with the Jews (see Daniel 9:26-27). In the mean time, the German-based Siemens Corporation is working closely with the Russian defense establishment, and indirectly with the Iranian nuclear program. The military contract relationship between Russia and Germany is projected to “last for decades” (German-Foreign-Policy.com, February 12, 2009), and might also become part of the seven-year peace treaty with “many,” spoken of by Daniel. As time moves forward, more and more of the events prophesied in the Bible are either coming to pass or are being prepared to come to pass. These are truly exciting times.

God’s Ways Work for Teens. According to the recently-released results of the National Longitudinal Survey of Adolescent Health, research on adolescent sexual behavior reveals that young people who abstain from sex have the following characteristics in common: 1) Future orientation, with a focus on long-term goals [vision]; 2) Willingness to postpone current pleasures for larger future rewards [denying self]; 3) Perseverance, as in the ability to stick to a task or commitment; 4) A belief that current behavior can positively affect the future; 5) Impulse control, including ability to control emotions and desires [sound mind]; 6) Resistance to peer influence [wisdom]; 7) Respect for parental and social values; 8) Sense of self-worth and personal dignity. “Abstinence also is associated with better physical and mental health across socioeconomic groups, according to a summary of the study in U.S. News & World Report. Young people who make abstinence decisions do better in school, too. Abstinent teens are far more likely to attend and graduate from college than those who are sexually active” (CitizenLink.com, January 13, 2009). God promised thousands of years ago that if we follow His commandments, we will be blessed and we will enjoy an abundant life (see Leviticus 26:1-13, Deuteronomy 28:1-14). Modern research is proving that God’s principles and promises are true—even for the youth. This IS the “evidence of things not seen” and the “substance of things hoped for” (Hebrews 11:1). God’s ways DO work, even for young people!

Here are his comments on being a light and example:

Be a Light and Example: According to the Scriptures, God desires His people to be lights and examples to a world that is enveloped in darkness. God called Abraham to learn to live by His commandments and to walk before Him and be blameless (Genesis 17:1; 26:5). Moses told the Israelites that God gave them His laws to set them apart from other nations so they could be examples to the world (Deuteronomy 4:1-9), and they were instructed to pass on these concepts and ideas to their children. The Old Testament makes it clear that God’s people were to live moral lives, avoid profanity, avoid sexual perversions, and even to refrain from getting tattoos or dressing like the opposite sex (Exodus 20; Leviticus 18:22; 19:28; Deuteronomy 22:5). In the New Testament, Jesus told His disciples they were to be lights to the world, and live not only by the letter of God’s law, but also by the spirit of the law (Matthew 5:13-30). In addition to the instructions to live moral lives, the Apostle Paul advised Christians to wear their hair in a manner that was appropriate for either a man or a woman (1 Corinthians 11:14-16) and said that men and women should dress in modest and appropriate apparel—especially for Church services (1 Timothy 2:9-10). While some want to dismiss these clear New Testament guidelines as “rules and regulations” that are irrelevant to Christians, these instructions were preserved for us in the word of God to set His people apart from Satan’s societies so they can truly be lights to this world—not only spiritually, but also physically. As we see the standards of conduct and dress continue to decline, these biblical guidelines will become increasingly noticeable as Christians function as “lights” in a darkened world.

Here are his closing comments:

Dealing with Adversaries:  Periodically, critics and adversaries rise up to attack God’s Work, God’s people and the ministry by hurling criticism, spreading rumors, lies and half-truths, and doing whatever they can to foster doubt and division.  However, those whom God is calling and using need to understand—it comes with the territory!  Long ago, Solomon wrote, “an ungodly man [or woman] digs up evil, and it is on his lips like a burning fire” (Proverbs 16:27).  Solomon also observed, “The words of a talebearer are like tasty trifles” (Proverbs 18:8). However, this is a poor diet that eventually produces a sick and angry mind.  Persecution has dogged God’s people down through the ages.  Joseph was imprisoned on false charges (Genesis 39).  Angry religious leaders plotted against Jeremiah and determined to “attack him with the tongue.” Yet, God told Jeremiah, “They will fight against you, but they shall not prevail against you. For I am with you” (Jeremiah 18:18; 1:19).  Jesus had to endure mocking and vehement accusations by religious and civil leaders who wanted to destroy His ministry (Luke 23:10-11).  Stephen was accused by false witnesses (Acts 6:11-13).  The Apostle Paul dealt with people who “spoke evil of the Way” (Acts 19:9) and he encountered “many adversaries” (1 Corinthians 16:9). Peter warned that false teachers who have gone astray would “speak evil of things they do not understand” (2 Peter 2:12).  Critics and adversaries seldom realize that when they begin to spread their criticism, accusations and lies, they have adopted Satan’s methods and become agents in his hands to destroy the Work of God (see John 8:44; 1 Peter 5:8; Revelation 12:9-10).  As God’s people, we need to reflect on these biblical examples and remember that wise people don’t believe everything they hear—and, if they are troubled by something, they seek accurate information.

The above timing is interesting to me, because I posted a news item about critics who use gossip to attack Herbert W. Armstrong an hour before I read the above. Dr. Winnail and I apparently were thinking the same things about our adversaries this week.

As a sportsman, I was disappointed when, upon moving to North Carolina, I encountered the "Sunday law."  No deer hunting on Sunday.  Period.  As a Sabbath-keeper, this has brought me no little consternation!  I will not hunt on Saturday, and according to the laws of the State, I may not hunt on Sunday.  That leaves Monday through Friday - not ideal for...

But far beyond my own personal pain, this brings up a bigger question:  “Why rest on Sunday at all?”  Most Christians believe that “Sunday rest” originated in the Bible.  What honest truth-seekers are shocked to find is there is absolutely no biblical command to rest on Sunday.  None.  So, why do some rest on Sunday if the Bible doesn’t command it? European Commission President Barroso recently commented that the global financial crisis has “sparked a debate… among people who matter in Britain,” about joining the euro. The sterling pound recently fell to its lowest level ever against the Euro—almost equaling it in value. Denmark is seeking entry into the Eurozone, while Iceland is “considering switching to the euro even without a green light from EU institutions and despite their warnings against such a unilateral move” (EU Observer, December 1, 2008). As cries for the euro to become the world currency increase, the European Central Bank just declared that Britain is “unfit” to enter the Eurozone because of its current financial crisis (Telegraph, January 8, 2009). The stage is being set for a strong nation or group of nations to take the world stage in an attempt to lead the world into a new era of apparent peace and relative prosperity (Revelation 13:1-7, 18:9-15).  The nations of the world appear to be growing amenable to relinquishing more of their sovereignty in return for economic stability. Exactly how these prophecies will play out remains to be seen, but a worldwide currency could play into this prophetic scenario.

Commentary: The ideals of our forebears

On January 20, 2009, Barack Hussein Obama assumed the leadership of a mighty but beleaguered nation.  Regardless of whether we are individually thrilled, indifferent, or dismayed about the new American president and his Democratic majority, perhaps we should ask ourselves an honest question: are we sincerely praying for President Obama? Read more

Commentary: "The shadow..."

My family walked in the shadow of death this last year.  Not a pleasant subject, to be sure, but one that was thrust upon us nonetheless.  I lost my mother in April, 2008. She was elderly and infirm, and for the last two years of her life suffered from the scourge of Alzheimer's disease.  So, while it was sad to close that chapter, it was not unexpected, nor was it tragic. It was quite naturally her time to die, as it states in book of Ecclesiastes, chapter 3.  On the heels of that loss... Read more

Commentary: New Year's guilt

How are you doing with your New Year's resolutions?  Are you determinedly following through on your personal commitment to improve your appearance or your behavior?  Or, are you feeling guilty because you are behind schedule?  Maybe you haven't even started them yet.  One of my favorite TV shows is CBS News Sunday Morning.  Last Sunday's show had a brief segment about human guilt - why we feel guilty.  This report explained... Read more

Here is one of the world news items:

Watch the Middle East! For decades the Church has admonished us to watch the Middle East. Recent events in Jerusalem, Gaza and Lebanon should remind us of this region’s prophetic importance. Now Iran claims to have 70,000 hard-line students who have “signed up” to carry out suicide attacks against Israel in retaliation for its offensive against Gaza (AP, January 5, 2009). In addition, the latest U.S. intelligence estimates suggest that by the end of the year, Iran will have enough weapons-grade material to construct three nuclear bombs—it could have enough fuel for the first bomb by the end of January (DEBKA, January 5, 2009). On January 3, the Egyptian Foreign Minister accused the UN Security Council of “failing to do its job,” by not immediately condemning Israel’s move into Gaza (Reuters, January 5, 2008). Egypt and Egyptian president Mubarak have taken the lead in the current Hamas-Israel conflict in Gaza (EU Observer, January 8, 2009). Daniel reveals that the king of the south will eventually “push against” the king of the north (see Daniel 11). Currently the nations to the south of Europe are united on some issues and divided on others. Will some issue cause the nations to the south to come together in some way? What will this end time “push” look like? We must continue to watch the Middle East to see how these events will fit into prophecies about the end of the age.

Commentary: "Dear Abby" strikes out

While the syndicated "Dear Abby" advice column in many newspapers across the U.S. has been celebrated for decades for its wit and "common sense," in the column I read the other day it was clear that "Abby" had struck out. The individual writing to "Abby" was a 16-year-old, struggling with seemingly overwhelming homosexual feelings.  Struggling to deal with those feelings and failing to change them, the teen asks "Abby" for advice... Read more

Commentary: Change

2008 closed as one of the most dramatic years in decades.  From a historic election, to a reeling economy, to the outbreak of serious hostilities in the Middle East, every corner we have turned this year has confronted us with major changes.  Change is a constant in our physical world.  Our bodies change, aging and adjusting.  Our families change, with children growing up, and parents growing old.  Our society is... Commentary: Drunk again!

The good ol' USA has been on a binge.  A real drunk.  A fall down, slobbering, substance abuse induced intoxication.  I'm not talking about alcohol or illicit drugs, but a binge nonetheless. And, as in an alcoholic stupor which leads to a terrific hangover, this country is feeling the painful effect of its overindulgence.

01/12/09 a.m. Here is the latest update from LCG's Dr. Winnail. In it, he mentions increases in income, LU, Germany, Saw Khin Maung Gyi's death, a change with LYC, Hawaii, world news items, and our challenge to grow,

Here is the part on our challenge:

Our Challenge to Grow: We are admonished in the Scriptures to “grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 3:18). One reason is so that we will not be misled by false teachers. The Apostle Paul encouraged Timothy to diligently study the Scriptures in order to be able to correctly explain the Truth and to be a more effective teacher and minister (2 Timothy 2:15-16; 1 Timothy 4:12-15). We are told that the “work of the ministry” is to help God’s people grow in “the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God” (Ephesians 4:12-14). The Scriptures reveal that Christians are called to become kings, priests and teachers who will point all human beings to the Truth in the coming Kingdom of God (Revelation 5:10; Isaiah 30:20-21). With this in mind, let’s take advantage of every opportunity to enhance our knowledge and understanding of the Scriptures so that we can prepare to teach God’s way of life!

Here is the previous week's update from Dr. Winnail.
