COP26 a failure? Greta Thunberg not pleased

Part of COP26 ended and some see it as a failure:

The COP26 climate summit is drawing parallels to the disastrous Copenhagen meeting of 2009

November 5, 2021

Asad Rehman, a spokesperson for the COP26 coalition, a U.K.-based civil society that represents indigenous communities, frontline activists and grassroots campaigns from the global south, told CNBC that he had been struck by the comparisons between the meeting in Glasgow and previous talks in Copenhagen.

The 2009 summit in Denmark’s capital city is widely regarded as a failure, with a deal many countries criticized for falling short of the action needed to tackle the climate crisis.

“There are, of course, already parallels in that it is a cold, wet northern European city,” Rehman said. “But there are also the more important comparisons.”

As with COP26 in Glasgow, Rehman said talks in Copenhagen were billed as humanity’s last and best chance to prevent the worst of what the climate crisis had in store. Both summits were “hugely expensive” for the global south, he added, with a lack of affordable accommodation and civil society groups “locked out” of negotiations. …

“I just find it a really uncanny moment in terms of the politics, the organizational ineptitude and, of course, the context in which it takes place,” Rehman said. One key difference between COP15 and COP26, he added, was that a new generation of climate justice movements in the global north now had much more understanding of the systemic causes of the crisis. https://www.cnbc.com/2021/11/05/cop26-climate-summit-why-glasgow-is-drawing-parallels-to-copenhagen.html

COP26: Fridays for Future protest calls for climate action, not hollow promises

5 November 2021

About 10,000 people joined a Fridays for Future protest in Glasgow on Friday, in a stand against inaction on climate change at COP26.

The protesters were joined by teen activist Greta Thunberg, who called for public pressure as leaders negotiate the global climate change response. …

Thunberg, along with fellow young activists Vanessa Nakate, Dominika Lasota, and Mitzi Tan, launched a petition with US non-profit Avaaz calling for world leaders to “face up to the climate emergency.”

It calls on world leaders to maintain the goal of a 1.5 degree Celsius (2.7 Fahrenheit) limit, halt fossil fuel investments, subsidies, and new projects, and to end “creative carbon accounting.” It also demanded countries deliver the $100 billion (€86 billion) already promised as well as additional funds for climate disasters, and to enact climate policies that protect workers and the most vulnerable. https://www.dw.com/en/cop26-fridays-for-future-protest-calls-for-climate-action-not-hollow-promises/a-59720397

Complaints about inaction on matters of pollution are not new. Notice something published over 50 years ago by the old Worldwide Church of God:

SCIENTISTS WARN “ACT NOW on Pollution… don’t just talk”

Frightened scientists frankly warn of the possible death of the planet Earth through pollution. Action must be taken by an INFORMED and CONCERNED public NOW! PLANET Earth is sick. Very sick. The symptoms of this planetary disease are all around us in our air, our water and our food. Some scientists say the disease may have already progressed too far. … man has committed himself to a world of increasing technology – more automobiles, more electrical power, more gadgetry, more food from depleted soil. Along with this, modern man has made a tragic assumption. He has felt it his destiny to manipulate, control, and where he has deemed necessary, drastically alter his environment; to exploit nature and the earth’s abundant riches, rather than to live in harmony with the laws that govern the intricate ecological balance of our globe. (Plain Truth, February 1970)

Yes, action speaks louder than words on matters like pollution.

However, many, including Greta Thunberg, are promoting a worldly view that without repentance, but through international cooperation of unconverted leaders, the world will be able to improve itself enough to prevent ecological disasters.

The Bible says that will not work.

Twice the Bible warns:

There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death. (Proverbs 14:12, 16:25)

Instead of humans fixing the world’s problems, Jesus warned:

21 For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be. 22 And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved; but for the elect’s sake those days will be shortened. (Matthew 24:21-22)

The Bible teaches:

1 Unless the Lord builds the house, They labor in vain who build it; (Psalm 127:1)

While many in the world are involved in “Climate Action,” they, most often, have not have sought to go about it God’s way. They are laboring in vain. This does not mean that humans should waste resources or pollute. And yes, many steps to reduce pollution need to be taken, but the thrust of the agenda is not to be proper biblical stewards of the earth. Instead, the details tend to focus on various controlling methods that are often not consistent with biblical morals.

The Bible says they will not succeed. Notice a statement related to the world at the time of Jesus’ return:

18 The nations were angry, and Your wrath has come,
And the time of the dead, that they should be judged,
And that You should reward Your servants the prophets and the saints,
And those who fear Your name, small and great,
And should destroy those who destroy the earth. (Revelation 11:18)

Despite COP26, Greta Thunberg, etc., the Bible shows that the ecological system will get much worse as higher heat and rising seas are coming:

8 Then the fourth angel poured out his bowl on the sun, and power was given to him to scorch men with fire. 9 And men were scorched with great heat, and they blasphemed the name of God who has power over these plagues; and they did not repent and give Him glory. (Revelation 16:8-9)

12 I looked when He opened the sixth seal, and behold, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became like blood. 13 And the stars of heaven fell to the earth, as a fig tree drops its late figs when it is shaken by a mighty wind. 14 Then the sky receded as a scroll when it is rolled up, and every mountain and island was moved out of its place (Revelation 6:12-14).

17 Then the seventh angel poured out his bowl into the air, and a loud voice came out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, “It is done!” 18 And there were noises and thunderings and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such a mighty and great earthquake as had not occurred since men were on the earth. 19 Now the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell. And great Babylon was remembered before God, to give her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of His wrath. 20 Then every island fled away, and the mountains were not found. 21 And great hail from heaven fell upon men, each hailstone about the weight of a talent. Men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail, since that plague was exceedingly great (Revelation 16:17-21).

Note, however, the above prophecies are for several years into the future–we are not too near that yet.

The Bible is clear that a new world will come once Jesus returns. Jesus will rule in the millennial Kingdom of God.

God can truly fix the disaster that humans are causing through sin.

Pray for God’s kingdom to come (Matthew 6:10).
