First Canada, Now Australia: The Trump Factor Boosts Another World Leader in an Election

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was returned to power in an election Saturday, the latest left-leaning leader to achieve a comeback victory as President Trump roils global markets and upends international affairs. https://www.wsj.com/world/first-canada-now-australia-the-trump-factor-boosts-another-world-leader-in-a-close-election-bef1c5a1

The Australian Electoral Commission’s projections gave Albanese’s ruling center-left Labor Party 70 seats and the conservative opposition coalition 24 seats in the 150-seat House of Representatives, the lower chamber where parties need a majority to form governments. Unaligned minor parties and independent candidates appeared likely to win 13 seats.
Meanwhile, Liberal-National Coalition leader Peter Dutton has lost his seat of Dickson, in Brisbane, to Labor’s Ali France. …
Opposition Liberal Party spokesman, Senator James Paterson, defended the conservative campaign, which he also said was negatively affected by “the Trump factor”. “It was devastating in Canada for the conservatives … I think it has been a factor here, just how big a factor will be determined in a few hours’ time,” he told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC).
“Trump had a massive effect in changing people’s perception of risk,” election analyst Tony Barry told the ABC. …
Dutton had proposed slashing the federal education department as part of his pledge to sack 41,000 public servants, a move Labor has described as being pulled “from the DOGE playbook”. https://www.newsweek.com/australian-election-results-doge-donald-trump-factor-anthony-albanese-2067638

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has become the first Australian prime minister to win a second consecutive three-year term in 21 years. …

Labor argues Dutton’s administration would slash services to pay for its nuclear ambitions.
“We’ve seen the attempt to run American-style politics here of division and pitting Australians against each other and I think that’s not the Australian way,” Albanese said.
Albanese also noted that his government had improved relations with China, which removed a series of official and unofficial trade barriers that had cost Australian exporters 20 billion Australian dollars ($13 billion) a year since Labor came to power in 2022. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/australia-labor-party-anthony-albanese-peter-dutton-trump-election-results/
If you look at the tweet at the beginning of this post, you can see that there have been issues other than just trade that has caused Australians to not like those they associated with policies of Donald Trump.
Yet, irrespective of the vote and views of Donald Trump, Australia still considers itself highly dependent on the United States as its key military ally.
Australia, like Canada, the UK, New Zealand, and the USA are all part of the “Five Eyes” alliance and this election (nor the one recently in Canada) is expected to change that, for now at least.
Interestingly, if it were not for Donald Trump’s tariffs and other threats, according to earlier polls, the elections in both Canada (who just re-elected Mark Carney) and Australia would have put in leaders who were less left-leaning.
It is also interesting to note, like Australia’s Peter Dutton, Canada’s main opposition leader Pierre Poilievre lost his seat in Monday’s general election. Both look to have been impacted by what has been called the “Trump Effect.”
