CG7’s A.F. Dugger on the gospel showing that saints will reign on the kingdom on the earth

COGwriter

Craig White sent out a group email which stated:

A Church of God (Seventh Day) contact of mine has scanned the attached booklet by CG7 pioneer A… Ferguson Dugger (father of the famous Andrew Dugger). It is also uploaded here https://www.friendsofsabbath.org/iframe/ABC/CG7/A%20F%20Dugger/AF_Dugger.htm

I have been after this old booklet for decades!

Regards to all,

Craig

He and I emailed back and forth as I had questions, mainly about when it was written and printed.

Anyway that article was originally written in the 19th century by Church of God leader A.F. Dugger:

The saints are redeemed at the second advent, and of them it is written: “And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation, and hast made us unto our God kings and priests; and we shall reign on the earth:” (Revelaton 5:9, 10) Again, “Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with Him a thousand years.” (Rev. 20:6) Observe not in heaven, but on the earth.-Revelation 5:10.

Daniel located Christ’s reign, kingdom and dominion on the earth: “And the kingdom and dominion, and the” greatness of the kingdom under the whole heaven, shall be given to the saints of the most High, whose kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey Him.” (Dan. 7:27)

Observe, this kingdom and dominion are not above, but under the whole heavens. Of this kingdom it is affirmed: “But the saints of the most High shall take the kingdom, and possess the kingdom for ever, even for ever and ever.” Please notice: The kingdom and dominion is given to Christ at His return.-“I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of Days, and they brought Him near before Him; and there was given Him dominion and glory, and a kingdom, that all people and nations and languages should serve Him: His dominion is an everlasting dominion which shall not pass away, and His kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.” (Dan. 7:13, 14)

Observe the following points: 1st, When Christ comes He takes His kingdom; 2nd, His kingdom is on the earth-under the whole heavens; 3rd, The saints at this time take possession of the kingdom and are to possess it forever. All people, nations, and languages, arc to serve Him. These points can never be reconciled with the theory of the utter desolation of the earth at Christ’s second advent. According to Isaiah, Christ is to occupy David’s throne. “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder; and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even forever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.” (Isa. 9:6,7)

To the same import are the words of the angel to Mary: “And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favor with God. And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: an.d the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: and he shall reign over the house of Jacob forever, and his kingdom there shall be no end.” (Luke 1:30-33)

Be careful to note these particulars: When Christ comes, he comes to reign; then he reigns upon David’s throne; David’s throne was not in heaven, but on the earth, and as Christ reigns on the throne of his father David, he must reign on the earrh. Christ is now on his heavenly -Father’s throne. (Heb. 10:12; Rev. 3:21)

When he comes to receive the kingdom, he will then sit upon the throne of his glory: “When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory.”-Matt. 25:3l. The prophets, apostles, and the faithful of past ages will then receive their promised kingdom. “And I appoint unto you a kingdom as my Father hath appointed unto me; that ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.” (Luke 22:27, 30)

“Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration, (restoration, renewal of the earth), when the Son of man shall sit upon the throne of his glory, ye also shall ‘sit upon twelve thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.” (Matt. 19:28) Christ’s throne is upon the earth. We are to sit with Christ upon his throne. “To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame and am set down with my Father in His throne:” (Rev. 3 :21) occupying a seat with Him. We shall reign with Him, “If we suffer with Him we shall reign with Him,” (2 Tim. 2:12) not in heaven, but in Mr. Zion, where David’s throne is located. “And the Lord shall reign over them in Mount Zion from henceforth ever forever.”

“And the Lord shall be King over all the earth, in that day shall there be one Lord and his name one.”-Zech. 14:9. …

We are told that when the people believed the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptised. (Acts 8:12) How are we to believe things concerning the kingdom of God unless we accept the statements of Daniel relative to the coming of Christ and the time and place of the establishment of his kingdom?

There is to be a glorious reign of peace after the coming of the Lord, and the binding of Satan, as set forth in numerous scriptures. See Isaiah 11: 1 to 9, where it is said the “wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the Fatling together; and a little child shall lead them.” Verse 8 says, “The suckling child shall play on the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the cockatrice den. They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain: for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea.” (Dugger AF. DESOLATION of THE EARTH, 6th edition. Originally written c. 1895, published c. 1935, pp 1-4, 8)

Yes, the kingdom will be established on the earth during the millennium.

Notice the following from the old Worldwide Church of God written by the late evangelist Raymond McNair in the 20th century:

God’s Kingdom set up on earth

Jesus Christ will return to set up God’s Kingdom at the last moment before carnal man, under Satan’s sway, finally destroys himself (Matt. 24:21-22). If the Creator-Ruler of the universe didn’t intervene, not a single human being would be left alive on this earth.

The book of Revelation shows us what will happen when Christ returns to rule this world: “And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years, And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years [the Millennium] should be fulfilled” (Rev. 20:1-3).

One of Christ’s first acts at His Second Coming will be to bind Satan so that the devil can no longer deceive the world (Rev. 12:9).

Then what will happen?

“And I saw thrones, and they [the saints] sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them… and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years [the Millennium]. But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection [the resurrection of the saints, who will rule with Jesus Christ during the Millennium]. Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign [on the earth] with him a thousand years” (Rev. 20:4-6).

Jesus promised that the saints — those who allow themselves to be ruled by God’s law, who overcome and who endure to the end — would be given power over the nations (Rev. 2:26-27, 3:21) and that they would reign with Him on the earth (Rev. 5:10, Dan. 7:27, 2:44).

Jesus will then be “Lord of lords, and King of kings” (Rev. 17:14). Zechariah prophesied that “the Lord shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one Lord, and his name one” (Zech. 14:9). Jesus’ headquarters will be in Jerusalem (Jer. 3:17), from which He and

His saints will rule the world.

At last — utopia!

God’s Kingdom — God’s Family — will rule this earth in true peace, prosperity and happiness. Let us notice some of the many scriptures that describe the coming wonderful world tomorrow.

With Satan bound — put in an abyss and restrained, for 1,000 years, from deceiving the nations — what will happen?

“He [Satan] who smote the people in wrath with a continual stroke, he that ruled the nations in anger, is persecuted, and none hindereth. The whole earth is at rest, and is quiet: they break forth into singing” (Isa. 14:6-7). Yes, the nations will break forth into singing when Satan is bound. The earth will finally know peace — no more strife or war.

God will then open, for the first time, the minds of all people to His truth (Isa. 25:7). God will begin to offer His Holy Spirit and salvation to mankind as a whole. Man’s very nature — his carnal, selfish orientation toward getting instead of giving — will be changed to God’s way of giving, serving, sharing, of having concern for others equal to or greater than concern for self (Jer. 31:31-34).

At last, God’s law will be written in the hearts and minds of all mankind, and crime, war, sickness and violence will vanish. Man will learn that obedience to God’s law pays big dividends.

Mankind will actually begin to seek God — will want to learn of and live by God’s way:

“And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the Lord’s house shall be established in the top of the mountains … and all nations shall flow unto it. And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law [of God], and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.

“And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation; neither shall they learn war any more” (Isa. 2:2-4).

The prophet Micah adds this interesting detail: “But they shall sit every man under his vine and under his fig tree; and none shall make them afraid: for the mouth of the Lord of hosts hath spoken it” (Mic. 4:4).

Today people live in constant fear of violence and crime from fellowman; nations live in dread of the nuclear mushroom cloud. But in the wonderful world tomorrow, “None shall make them afraid”!

Man will not only be at peace with his fellowman, but with nature itself. God will change the animals’ nature also:

“The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them. And the cow and the bear shall feed [together]; their young ones shall lie down together: and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. And the sucking child shall play on the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the cockatrice den.

“They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain: for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea” (Isa. 11:6-9).

What a wonderful, utopian age is about to dawn on this planet!

A world of abundance

Revolutions will take place in agriculture and construction. Man will no longer be occupied with war and trying to harm his fellowman. Under the direction of Christ and the immortal rulers, man will be able to devote his energies to food production and rebuilding — properly — civilization. God will even change the weather and landscapes to promote man’s physical prosperity (Isa. 30:23-25).

Isaiah 35 gives further details about the Messiah’s reign:

“The wilderness and the solitary place shall be glad for them; and the desert shall rejoice, and blossom as the rose. It shall blossom abundantly, and rejoice even with joy and singing… Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped. Then shall the lame man leap as an hart, and the tongue of the dumb sing: for in the wilderness shall waters break out, and streams in the desert. And the parched ground shall become a pool, and the thirsty land springs of water… And an highway shall be there, and a way… of holiness” (verses 1-2, 5-8).

No more will thousands starve to death daily, while millions of others suffer malnutrition because of lack of food (Amos 9:13-15).

What a time of prosperity! Man will have abundant reason to rejoice (Jer. 31:12-13, 30:19).

During the Millennium, God’s people will show the nations of this earth how to build and how to restore, unlike today, when so many are bent on tearing down and destroying (Isa. 61:4).

Right religion and education

Under the training of Christ and God’s immortal, spirit-born children, man will finally learn and practice God’s way — the way to every abundant blessing. Religion and education will be inextricably intertwined (Isa. 30:20-21).

The immortal saints will be able to suddenly appear and rebuke anyone who goes the wrong way.

True religion will be enforced. Mankind will begin to keep all God’s laws, which will include observing His Sabbaths and Holy Days (lsa. 66:23-24, Zech. 14:16-19). Individuals who rebel against Christ’s rule will be dealt with swiftly and surely.

When man begins keeping God’s Holy Days, including the Feast of Tabernacles, he will learn that God’s festivals reveal God’s great master plan.

In addition, there will be no more confusion of tongues — the whole earth will be united with one language (Zeph. 3:9).

And during the Millennium Jesus Christ — God Himself — will dwell on earth, at Jerusalem, with mankind (Isa. 33:17-20, Joel 3:20-21). Jerusalem will truly become the “City of Peace” during the Millennium.

The whole world will rejoice

This earth cannot know true, lasting peace (lsa. 59:8) until the “Prince of Peace” (Isa. 9:6-7) returns to this planet and establishes His world-ruling government.

We are commanded to rejoice during our Feast of Tabernacles celebrations because this great Feast of Ingathering pictures the soon-coming Kingdom of God, when Christ will do just that.  …

When God restores His law and His way of life — His divine government — to this war-weary earth, then we shall have unprecedented peace, happiness, abundant health and worldwide prosperity. This wonderful world tomorrow — the 1,000-year rule of the Kingdom of God — will be a time of supreme rejoicing for all nations.

What a world that will be! (Good News, September 1982)

Here is some excerpts from a booklet, written by me in the 21st century, titled The Gospel of the Kingdom of God:

“The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb … They shall not hurt nor destroy in all My holy mountain, For the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord As the waters cover the sea.” (Isaiah 11:6,9) …

Jesus, Himself, was born to be the KING of that Kingdom, as He plainly told Pilate (John 18:36-37). Understand that the Bible uses the terms “king” and “kingdom” interchangeably (e.g. Daniel 7:17-18,23). The KING of the future Kingdom of God was, then and there, standing next to the Pharisees. But they would not recognize Him as their king (John 19:21). When He returns, the world will reject Him (Revelation 19:19).

Jesus went on, in the following verses in Luke 17, to describe His second coming, when the Kingdom of God shall rule ALL THE EARTH (continuing with the Moffatt for consistency in this chapter):

22 To his disciples he said, “There will come days when you will long and long in vain to have even one day of the Son of man. 23 Men will say, ‘See, here he is!’ ‘See, there he is!’ but do not go out or run after them, 24 for like lightning that flashes from one side of the sky to the other, so will the Son of man be on his own day. 25 But he must first endure great suffering and be rejected by the present generation. (Luke 17:22-25, Moffatt)

Jesus referred to lightning flashing, just as in Matthew 24:27-31, describing His second coming to RULE the whole world. Jesus is not saying that His people will not be able to see Him when He returns. …

Jesus also had the Apostle John write about the millennial Kingdom of God that would be on the earth. Notice what He had John write:

4 I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for their witness to Jesus and for the word of God, who had not worshiped the beast or his image, and had not received his mark on their foreheads or on their hands. And they lived and reigned with Christ for a thousand years (Revelation 20:4).

Early Christians taught that the millennial Kingdom of God would be on the earth and replace the governments of the world as the Bible teaches (cf. Revelation 5:10, 11:15). …

Daniel Taught About the Kingdom

The prophet Daniel wrote:

40 And the fourth kingdom shall be as strong as iron, inasmuch as iron breaks in pieces and shatters everything; and like iron that crushes, that kingdom will break in pieces and crush all the others. 41 Whereas you saw the feet and toes, partly of potter’s clay and partly of iron, the kingdom shall be divided; yet the strength of the iron shall be in it, just as you saw the iron mixed with ceramic clay. 42 And as the toes of the feet were partly of iron and partly of clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong and partly fragile. 43 As you saw iron mixed with ceramic clay, they will mingle with the seed of men; but they will not adhere to one another, just as iron does not mix with clay. 44 And in the days of these kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed; and the kingdom shall not be left to other people; it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand forever (Daniel 2:40-44).

18 But the saints of the Most High shall receive the kingdom, and possess the kingdom forever, even forever and ever.’ (Daniel 7:18).

21 “I was watching; and the same horn was making war against the saints, and prevailing against them, 22 until the Ancient of Days came, and a judgment was made in favor of the saints of the Most High, and the time came for the saints to possess the kingdom. (Daniel 7:21-22)

From Daniel, we learn that the time will come when the Kingdom of God will destroy the kingdoms of this world and will last forever. We also learn that the saints will have their part in receiving this kingdom.

Many portions of Daniel’s prophecies are for our time in the 21st century.

Notice some passages from the New Testament:

12 “The ten horns which you saw are ten kings who have received no kingdom as yet, but they receive authority for one hour as kings with the beast. 13 These are of one mind, and they will give their power and authority to the beast. 14 These will make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb will overcome them, for He is Lord of lords and King of kings; and those who are with Him are called, chosen, and faithful.” (Revelation 17:12-14)

So, we see in both the Old and New Testaments the concept that there will be an end time earthly kingdom with ten parts and that God will destroy it and establish His kingdom.

Isaiah Taught About the Kingdom

God inspired Isaiah to write about the first part of the Kingdom of God, the thousand year reign known as the millennium, this way:

1 There shall come forth a Rod from the stem of Jesse, And a Branch shall grow out of his roots. 2 The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him, The Spirit of wisdom and understanding, The Spirit of counsel and might, The Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord.

3 His delight is in the fear of the Lord, And He shall not judge by the sight of His eyes, Nor decide by the hearing of His ears; 4 But with righteousness He shall judge the poor, And decide with equity for the meek of the earth; He shall strike the earth with the rod of His mouth, And with the breath of His lips He shall slay the wicked. 5 Righteousness shall be the belt of His loins, And faithfulness the belt of His waist.

6 “The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, The leopard shall lie down with the young goat, The calf and the young lion and the fatling together; And a little child shall lead them. 7 The cow and the bear shall graze; Their young ones shall lie down together; And the lion shall eat straw like the ox. 8 The nursing child shall play by the cobra’s hole, And the weaned child shall put his hand in the viper’s den. 9 They shall not hurt nor destroy in all My holy mountain, For the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord As the waters cover the sea.

10 “And in that day there shall be a Root of Jesse, Who shall stand as a banner to the people; For the Gentiles shall seek Him, And His resting place shall be glorious.” (Isaiah 11:1-10)

The reason I referred to this as the first part or first phase of the Kingdom of God, is that this is a time where it will be physical (prior to the time when the holy city, New Jerusalem comes down from heaven, Revelation 21) and will last a thousand years. …

The meek will inherit the earth (Matthew 5:5) and all things (Revelation 21:7). The earth, including the Holy City which will be on it, will be better because God’s ways will be implemented. Realize that:

7 Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end (Isaiah 9:7).

Clearly there will be growth after the final phase of the Kingdom of God has begun as all will obey God’s government. …

Nepos publicly combated the Allegorists, and maintained that there will be a reign of Christ on the earth…

It is God’s nation, His Kingdom that is holy.

As ambassadors, we do not normally engage in the direct politics of the nations of this world. But we are to live God’s way of life now (see also the free book available at www.ccog.org titled: Christians: Ambassadors for the Kingdom of God, Biblical instructions on living as a Christian). By doing so, we better learn why God’s ways are best, so that in His kingdom we can be kings and priests and reign with Christ on the earth:

5 To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood, 6 and has made us kings and priests to His God and Father, to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. (Revelation 1:5-6)

10 And have made us kings and priests to our God; And we shall reign on the earth. (Revelation 5:10) …

The millennial phase of the Kingdom of God is a literal kingdom that will be established on the earth. It will be based on the loving laws of God and a loving God as leader. The saints will reign with Christ for a thousand years (Revelation 5:10; 20:4-6).

Yes, the millennial kingdom will be on the earth. Let me mention that Nepos was a 3rd century Church of God leader–he is listed also in our succession list (see Laying on of Hands Succession and List)–and perhaps I should mention that Andrew n. Dugger, A.F. Dugger’s son, taught that the true Church of God did have apostolic succession.

The Bible teaches the millennial kingdom will be on the earth and the true Church of God has done so throughout the church age.

God’s Word has much more to say about what God’s Kingdom will be like. If you would like to know more, please read our free booklet, The Gospel of the Kingdom of God.

Consider also something that Jesus said;

25 “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? 27 Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?

28 “So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; 29 and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?

31 “Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble. (Matthew 6:25-34)

Yes, put your focus on the coming Kingdom of God.

Saints are to Reign on the Earth

Are Christian saints to be in heaven or reign on the earth during the Millennium? What was taught in the 19th century by A.F. Dugger of the Church of God Seventh Day, the 20th century by Raymond McNair of the Worldwide Church of God, and the 21st century by Bob Thiel of the Continuing Church of God? What does the Bible itself teach? Dr. Thiel reads scriptures as well as historical Church of God writings which show that Christians are to reign on earth during the 1,000-year long millennial kingdom of God. He also points to the fact that Christians are to seek first the Kingdom of God as Jesus taught.

Here is a link to our video: Saints are to Reign on the Earth.

That millennial kingdom will be on the earth.
