Liz Truss is to become the UK’s next prime minister after winning the contest to replace Boris Johnson as Conservative Party leader. But where did she come from and what makes her tick?

A Remain supporter who has become the darling of the Brexit-backing Conservative right wing.

A former Liberal Democrat activist, who marched against Margaret Thatcher in the 1980s, but who now claims to be the keeper of the Thatcherite flame.

It is fair to say that Mary Elizabeth Truss has been on a political journey.

She may not be a household name like her predecessor at Number 10 – and she was not the first choice of Tory MPs to replace Boris Johnson.

But her promise to return to fundamental Conservative values – cutting taxes and shrinking the state – proved to be exactly what party members, who got the final say over who took over from Mr Johnson, wanted to hear.

And, crucially, as foreign secretary she remained loyal to Mr Johnson until the bitter end as other ministers deserted him, winning her favour with Johnson loyalists. https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-58575895

Truss, 47, will become Britain’s third female prime minister, after Thatcher, who governed from 1979 to 1990, and Theresa May, who held office from 2016 to 2019.

Conservative Party members have embraced Truss’ vows to slash taxes and red tape and keep up Britain’s staunch support for Ukraine. Some see echoes of the Iron Lady — as Thatcher was known — in Truss’ vision of a “network of liberty” binding democracies around the world.

She has espoused positions that the European Union does not like (e.g. see EU and Ireland not pleased with UK’s protocol bill for Northern Ireland), hence while she is not Boris Johnson (who the EU did not like), she is not likely to be able to heal the rift between the UK and EU (watch also Brexit Happened: Now What?).

What foreign policy issues face the UKs new leader?

The new prime minister will also have to steer the UK on the international stage with Russia’s war in Ukraine, an increasingly assertive China, and ongoing tensions with the European Union over the aftermath of Brexit topping that agenda.

Truss said she would tear up parts of the Northern Ireland Protocol, a step that could lead to a new trade barriers or even legal difficulties with the EU.

A bill to unilaterally scrap some customs checks to ease the movement of goods between Northern Ireland and the rest of Britain is working its way through the British parliament, and Truss said last month that if picked as prime minister she would seek to deliver that legislation in full. https://www.dw.com/en/liz-truss-to-be-next-british-prime-minister/a-63018397

Let me add that the EU and Ireland do NOT like what Liz Truss said she would support for Northern Ireland. When my wife and I were in Ireland in May, the news media there was very critical of the UK’s plans on that.

That said, others have concerns about her abilities:

The 47-year-old incoming premier has promised a rightwing agenda of tax cuts – largely funded by borrowing – in an attempt to halt Britain sliding into a lengthy recession.

But, as Bill Blain warns this morning At MorningPorridge.com, the new UK Premier has 5 days – tops – to establish her new government and put in place the strategies and policies to restore confidence in the UK economy. If not, the Virtuous Sovereign Trinity will fracture. It needs sound communication and clear grasp of the problems behind the crisis. Truss hasn’t demonstrated either – yet.

New UK premier Lis Truss has, at most, 5 days to deliver a confidence turnaround in the UK economy. She has promised to deliver a plan – and we are all desperate to hear what it is. Expectations are not high.

It is not the Morning Porridge’s aim to comment directly on politics, but on how politics are likely to shift and nudge markets. It’s not my role to comment on the efficacy of policy proposals, like the ones she is apparently set to announce, but on whether the market will be convinced they are good and effective for the UK.

Simply put: If Truss fails to deliver a coherent strategy for the economy in the next few days – the UK risks an even steeper decline in sterling, an unravelling Gilts market (UK Government Bonds) and the undermining of the third leg of the Virtuous Sovereign Trinity; the political and economic strength that’s underlain the UK’s hard and soft power since the 17th Century.

As far as signs that are not good go, on “LGBTQ+ rights,” Liz Truss, according to Reuters, voted for gay marriage and has never voted against “LGBTQ+ rights” — but that is contrary to the Bible (see also God Created Marriage).

Liz Truss will likely try her best to lead, but she has not shown a strong reverence for scripture. The following came to mind related to her and many other politicians:

1 Unless the Lord builds the house,
They labor in vain who build it;
Unless the Lord guards the city,
The watchman stays awake in vain. (Psalm 127:1)

Of course, Liz Truss is also a woman. A while back, former US President Barack Obama said  he wanted women to rule over every country:

Speaking at a private event in Singapore on Monday, President Obama said that if women ran every country, we would all live with significantly improved living standards and there would be less war and strife. When it comes to leadership, women are “indisputably better” than men, Obama said, according to the BBC, which was apparently invited to the event.

Most of the world’s problems, Obama said, stem from too many old men in positions of power, an obvious slight directed at President Donald Trump, though he wasn’t explicitly named.

Although they’re not perfect, women are so much more advanced and even-headed than men, that Obama believes if women were given two years running every country on earth, all of our problems would be fixed.

“Now women, I just want you to know; you are not perfect, but what I can say pretty indisputably is that you’re better than us [men].”

“I’m absolutely confident that for two years if every nation on earth was run by women, you would see a significant improvement across the board on just about everything…living standards and outcomes.”

When asked if he would ever consider going back into political leadership, he said he believed in leaders stepping aside when the time came.

“If you look at the world and look at the problems it’s usually old people, usually old men, not getting out of the way,” he said.

“It is important for political leaders to try and remind themselves that you are there to do a job, but you are not there for life, you are not there in order to prop up your own sense of self importance or your own power.”

Notice a prophecy from the Book of Isaiah:

9 The look on their countenance witnesses against them,
And they declare their sin as Sodom;
They do not hide it.
Woe to their soul!
For they have brought evil upon themselves.

10 “Say to the righteous that it shall be well with them,
For they shall eat the fruit of their doings.
11 Woe to the wicked! It shall be ill with him,
For the reward of his hands shall be given him.
12 As for My people, children are their oppressors,
And women rule over them.
O My people! Those who lead you cause you to err,
And destroy the way of your paths.” (Isaiah 3:9-12)

Barack Obama, when president, refused to enforce the Defense of Marriage Act, and eventually supported its removal. He has assisted many in declaring their sin like Sodom (more biblical warnings about Sodom are in the article: The Bible Condemns Homosexuality).

And, also notice, that the Bible warns against women ruling. It is not that they can never help, but God says those who promote such things are causing people to err and get their way destroyed.

Although Barack Obama, particularly while campaigning to become US President, repeatedly claimed to be a Christian, he has overlooked many scriptures.

Jesus said that Christians are supposed to live “by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4).

The Bible does NOT teach that the world would be a better place if old men move aside and let women rule (for more on women’s biblical roles, check out the article: Women and the New Testament Church).

Furthermore, the Bible teaches what the solution is.

It is repentance and turning to Jesus, individually (Acts 2:38) as well as repentance nationally to save a people (Hosea 11:3a, 5b-7).

Since national repentance is not expected, the end of the USA (Daniel 11:39) and other governments of this world is coming:

15 Then the seventh angel sounded: And there were loud voices in heaven, saying, “The kingdoms of this world have become the kingdoms of our Lord and of His Christ, and He shall reign forever and ever!”  (Revelation 11:15-16)

However, the good news is that Kingdom of God is the solution (watch also The Kingdom of God is the Solution).

That  Kingdom of God will renew the earth and help all: men and women, boys and girls, rich and poor, etc.

Sadly, many leaders in the Anglo-American nations are causing people to err and not move in that biblical direction.
