Fresh off a trip to India and Australia, Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel addressed a group of Marines in San Diego, California Tuesday, and may have delivered a line that will show up in Republican campaign ads this election cycle. After updating the troops on some issues in the Pacific region and the Middle East, Hagel took questions from some of the Marines and gave a stark assessment of the global security situation: “The world is exploding all over.”

QUESTION: Good afternoon, sir. My question is that, given that the administration’s primary focus is on the Pacific theater, how has all of the issues popping up in the world today, Russia, Iraq, Africa, the rest of the theaters pretty much affected that current mission? And how do you foresee that affecting the mission in the future?
SEC. CHUCK HAGEL: Thank you. That’s a — go ahead, sit down — that’s a question I got often when I was in India and Australia. And the trip I just came from was my sixth trip to the Asia Pacific area in the last year-and-a-half. I’ve got four planned this calendar year. And so I get that question all the time. It’s a legitimate question for the very reasons you asked.
The world is exploding all over. And so is the United States going to continue to have the resources, the capabilities, the leadership, the bandwidth to continue with the rebalance toward the Asia Pacific? And the answer is yes…
I mentioned Darwin. And we’ll get eventually to the 2,500 Marines rotational presence. That’s new. The new arrangement we have in Singapore for LCS rotational berths there, that’s new. The new arrangement we have with the Philippines on using their bases on a rotational basis, that’s new. Wars and rumors of wars are popping up all around the world. There truly are conflicts in many lands.
The USA has basically taken the position that its focus needs to be Asia and Australia. The USA has troops in the Northern Australian city of Darwin, as the result of an agreement that the Obama Administration made with the then Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard.
While there are many physical reasons for the USA to feel as it does, the focus on Asia turns focus away from places like Europe. The annexation of Crimea this year, to cite one example, shows that Europe still is an area to watch. And Bible prophecy warns that Europe, and not Asia, will be the base of the main power that will take over the USA (Daniel 11:39).
But the purpose of this post is to point out that even secular sources are talking about wars all over being an issue.
Jesus said:
6 And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not troubled; for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. 7 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. 8 All these are the beginning of sorrows. (Matthew 24:6-8)
I believe that we are in the period that Jesus referred to as ‘the beginning of sorrows.’ However, as He said, the end is not yet. Temporal peace will happen in the Middle East (Daniel 9:27), yet more wars will come. The Book of Daniel tells of at least three main ones (Daniel 11:39-44) that start at the time of the Great Tribulation, with one being related to Armageddon (Revelation 16:16).
Because humanity does not truly know the way of peace (Romans 3:17), we will have wars until after Jesus returns and establishes the millennial kingdom, which eventually will be followed by the final kingdom. Ultimately then, there will be “no more wars” (Revelation 21:4). Until then, Jesus said to pray, “Your kingdom come” (Matthew 6:10).
