Pope Francis to resign in February 2019?

Pope Francis

COGwriter

Some have stated that Pope Francis might resign in a few months:

The Vatican is preparing for the Pope’s resignation in February 2019

The Vatican is under profound scrutiny and criticism after Monday’s shock announcement that they requested the U.S. Catholic Bishops to delay voting on new standards for survivors of sexual abuse and bishop accountability. The US Bishops, who were attending the fall meeting of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, were indeed surprised by the decision, and expressed a mixture of disappointment, acceptance, and frustration about the news. Angry victims and activists from BishopAccountability.org, which compiles data on clergy abuse in the church, were present in Baltimore outside the hotel where the Conference of US Catholic Bishops took place, and became increasingly frustrated, some shouting in despair that this was “totally unacceptable!!”  …

In September 2018, Pope Francis convened all the Episcopal Conferences worldwide for a general meeting to take place in Rome in February 2019, to discuss the prevention of abuse of minors and vulnerable adults. It seems the Argentinian Pope wants to impose his own view before leaving office, not tolerating any further interference from the US Catholic Bishops.https://govtslaves.info/2018/11/15/the-vatican-is-preparing-for-the-popes-resignation-in-february-2019/

Various ones have called on Pope Francis to resign the past couple of months (see ‘Former Vatican official calls for Pope’s resignation amid sex abuse scandal’, Francis says no comment on resignation letter; ‘By secular standards, the Catholic Church is a corrupt organization and German priest pedophilia, Pope Francis calls for conference, ‘Civil war,’ and Francis pushes for salvation with Mary).

Pope Francis has already been around longer than he felt he would as his statements from 3 1/2 years ago attest:

March 13, 2015

Hearing confessions to mark his second anniversary as head of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Francis offered a confession of his own Friday: He doubts he’ll be pontiff for long.

“I have the feeling that my pontificate will be brief, 4 or 5 years; I do not know, even 2 or 3,” the 78-year-old Francis said during an interview with Mexican broadcaster Televisa.

“Two have already passed. It’s a somewhat vague sensation,” he said, according to a Vatican translation from Spanish. “I feel that the Lord has placed me here for a short time, and nothing more.”

He compared the feeling to “a gambler who convinces himself he will lose so he won’t be disappointed. And if he wins, he’s happy.”  http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/world/2015/03/13/pope-francis-papacy-anniversary-pizza/70277854/

In the past, he dropped a hint or two that he might like to resign like Benedict XVI did.  Of course, if he does not resign and does not die, he could be around much longer than he indicated.

Because of his age (he will be 82 next month), I have had concerns whether or not Pope Francis would be the final pope.  In order to be such, he would have to live at least another 7 1/2 years and probably longer than that.

In the 12th century, Catholic saint Malachy claimed to have had a vision of all remaining popes. There were 112 on his list.

According to his writing, the last pope is the one who comes after the Glory of the Olive pontiff. Malachy wrote many centuries ago about pontiff 111:

GLORIA OLIVEA
The glory of the olive

Now notice an interpretation that was written decades prior to Joseph Ratzinger becoming Pope Benedict XVI by the Catholic writer Peter Bander:

The Order of St. Benedict has claimed by tradition that this pope will come from within the Order…The Order of St. Benedict is known as the OLIVETANS…

Although Joseph Ratzinger did not come from the Benedictine order, the choice of the name “Benedict” could be seen to be consistent with the Malachy prediction about pope number 111.

Let us look at the entire prediction of the final pope (#112) by Bishop Malachy as reported in The Catholic Encyclopedia

“In the final persecution of the Holy Roman Church there will reign Peter the Roman, who will feed his flock amid many tribulations, after which the seven-hilled city will be destroyed and the dreadful Judge will judge the people. The End.”

Now let us notice that the Bible warns about something happening in the end time that is consistent with parts of the Malachy prophecy:

1 And there came one of the seven angels, who had the seven vials, and spoke with me, saying: Come, I will shew thee the condemnation of the great harlot, who sitteth upon many waters, 2 With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication; and they who inhabit the earth, have been made drunk with the whine of her whoredom.

3 And he took me away in spirit into the desert. And I saw a woman sitting upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns.  4 And the woman was clothed round about with purple and scarlet, and gilt with gold, and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand, full of the abomination and filthiness of her fornication.  5 And on her forehead a name was written: A mystery; Babylon the great, the mother of the fornications, and the abominations of the earth.  6 And I saw the woman drunk with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus. And I wondered, when I had seen her, with great admiration.

7 And the angel said to me: Why dost thou wonder? I will tell thee the mystery of the woman, and of the beast which carrieth her, which hath the seven heads and ten horns.  8 The beast, which thou sawest, was, and is not, and shall come up out of the bottomless pit, and go into destruction: and the inhabitants on the earth (whose names are not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world) shall wonder, seeing the beast that was, and is not.

9 And here is the understanding that hath wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains, upon which the woman sitteth, and they are seven kings:  10 Five are fallen, one is, and the other is not yet come: and when he is come, he must remain a short time.  11 And the beast which was, and is not: the same also is the eighth, and is of the seven, and goeth into destruction.

12 And the ten horns which thou sawest, are ten kings, who have not yet received a kingdom, but shall receive power as kings one hour after the beast. 13 These have one design: and their strength and power they shall deliver to the beast.  14 These shall fight with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them, because he is Lord of lords, and King of kings, and they that are with him are called, and elect, and faithful.

15 And he said to me: The waters which thou sawest, where the harlot sitteth, are peoples, and nations, and tongues.  16 And the ten horns which thou sawest in the beast: these shall hate the harlot, and shall make her desolate and naked, and shall eat her flesh, and shall burn her with fire.  17 For God hath given into their hearts to do that which pleaseth him: that they give their kingdom to the beast, till the words of God be fulfilled.

18 And the woman which thou sawest, is the great city, which hath kingdom over the kings of the earth.  (Revelation 17:1-18, DRB)

In both Malachy’s list and the Book of Revelation we see:

  1. Reference to the city of seven hills/mountains.
  2. The destruction of the city of seven hills/mountains.
  3. The end of a power in Rome.
  4. Persecution.
  5. Troubles/tribulations on the earth.
  6. A type of judgment.
  7. Events for the end time.

The persecution that the Bible tells of is of the truly faithful (Revelation 17:6 and seemingly others per 17:16-17).  And the judgment that the Bible shows happens, will also come from God (Revelation 17:1,14; cf. 6:10; 18:10).

Whether or not Pope Francis is the last pope, the fact is that the last pope on the Malachy list seems to be warned against in the Holy Bible. Satan very well could have influenced the voting to add at least one extra pontiff between numbers 111 and 112 on the list.

Since becoming pontiff, Francis has taken steps some Catholics have wondered about. One Cardinal hinted that Francis could be an antipope, while one critical of Francis’ policies was demoted.

The ecumenical, inter-faith, and economic agenda of Pope Francis is consistent with being an antipope. But he, still, does not have to be the last one, though even if he were to be #112 on Malachy’s list.

If Pope Francis were to resign, especially while Pope emeritus Benedict XVI is still alive, then the next pope could be considered the successor to Benedict and could be the “last pope” of Catholic prophecy.

Having two popes in a row resign would be unsettling for many Roman Catholics. We will see what Francis does, and if he does resign, who will replace him.
