Supreme Court Divided About Lies

(CBS/AP)  WASHINGTON – The Supreme Court appears to be sharply divided over a law that makes it a crime to lie about having been awarded top military honors.

The justices engaged in spirited debate Wednesday over the constitutionality of a 2006 law aimed at curbing false claims about military exploits.

Some justices said they worried that upholding the Stolen Valor Act could lead to laws that might make it illegal to lie about an extramarital affair or a college degreehttp://www.cbsnews.com/8301-201_162-57382778/high-court-torn-over-law-banning-lie-about-medals/?tag=stack

People should not be allowed to lie about adultery or claim that they have college degrees that they do not possess.

The Bible condemns lying and adultery; here is one such condemnation:

8 But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death. (Revelation 21:8)

Jesus told some of the rulers (Pharisees, John 8:13) and others of His day:

44 You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.  45 But because I tell the truth, you do not believe Me.  46 Which of you convicts Me of sin? And if I tell the truth, why do you not believe Me?  47 He who is of God hears God’s words; therefore you do not hear, because you are not of God. (John 8:44-47)

Jesus condemned lying, as well as not believing someone who is telling the truth.

The Bible also warns:

1 But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: 2 For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, 3 unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, 4 traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away!  (2 Timothy 3:1-6)

Sadly, even some justices in the Supreme Court of the USA are having trouble even wishing to go against lying and false boasts.  This is just another indication as to how far the USA is sliding down morally.

The New Testament clearly teaches:

48 For everyone to whom much is given, from him much will be required (Luke 12:48).

The U.S.A. justices have a lot of education and should at least realize that truth is important.  Jesus says more will be required of such people (cf. John 9:41).

All, including even the much less educated, should realize that claiming earning medals or college degrees that one does not possess is wrong.
