Sunday Church Naxos Greece

Sunday Church, Naxos Greece

COGwriter

In his latest newsletter, Seventh-day Adventist scholar Dr. Samuele Bacchiocchi reported the following:

SUNDAY LAWS PROPOSED BY THE EUROPEAN EPISCOPAL COMMISSION

Many years Adventists have been wondering what could triggers the promulgation of international Sunday laws. In my past readings I found references to social, ecological, economic, and energy considerations as possible reasons for introducing Sunday Laws.

I came as surprise for me to learn this past week that the impetus for Sunday laws may come from the current financial crisis that affects many nations today. The European Episcopal Commission, known as COMECE, consisting of 24 bishops, each representing a western country, met in Brussels, the headquarter of the European Parliament from November 12-14, 2008.

The Bishops agreed that “the financial crisis has exposed a deeper spiritual crisis and a misguided set of values. The sense and value of human work has been pushed to the background in the general struggle for profit.” “In their exchange of views with the State Secretary for European Affairs, the Church representatives expressed their wish to see the Sunday rest day being better protected in national legislations as well as in the future EU Working Time Directive which is currently being revised.” http://www.comece.org/comece.taf?_function=news_new&_sub=&id=2&language=en

“The Bishops called for respect for Sunday rest as one of the foundations of the European social model and as a way of balancing work and family life. In recent years, Sunday as a weekly rest day has been threatened by legislation in many Member States thanks to liberal and consumerist-driven political concepts. In the context of the present economic crisis, Bishops call on the Members of the European Parliament to assume their responsibilities and include the protection of Sunday in the Working Time Directive that will be submitted to the European Parliament’s vote by the middle of December.” (http://www.catholic-ew.org.uk/ccb/catholic_church/media_centre2/press_releases/press_releases_2008/the_financial_crisis_is_a_test_for_the_values_of_european_society).

What this means is that at their next meeting scheduled by December 15, the European Parliament will discuss the European Bishops’ request to pass a legislation “for the protection of Sunday.” This is a startling new development in Western Europe where Sunday has become a secular day.

There are signs that such legislation could draw support in the USA. In an article entitled “ Barack Obama and Joe Biden: The Change We Need,” Michael Pearce’s Blog writes: “There have been a lot of changes in the past 100 years. Not only have we seen gang activity increase along with crimes, but so has energy consumption. The other change I realized was the rescinding of the ‘Sunday Laws’ across the United States.”

The article continues listing a host of benefits provided by Sunday Laws. The conclusion of the article is: “So perhaps we should consider enacting a Sunday Law. Not to restrict people from working, but to give liberty to those who can’t choose. And imagine the tax dollars that would be saved?” (http://my.barackobama.com/page/community/post/Tritium/gG5ngR).

It will be interesting to see if the European Parliament will pass a legislation “for the protection of Sunday,” and the possible repercussions of such legislation in other countries, including the USA.

While the SDAs have a lot of prophetic misunderstandings (SDA/LCG Differences: Two Horned Beast of Revelation and 666), they are correct that Europe will adopt Sunday (I do not believe that the USA will seriously adopt Sunday until militarily forced to).

Sunday was essentially adopted by Greco-Roman supporters who had contact with Mithraism (see Sunday: Memorial of Creation or Mithraism?) who seem to decide that they would be subject to less Imperial persecution if they adopted the more acceptable (to the Romans, not God) Sunday as opposed to Saturday.

The ideas of Sunday laws are not new.  The first Sunday law was enacted by Emperor Constantine in the early 4th century.

Constantine decreed circa March 7, 321:

Let all judges, the people of cities, and those employed in all trades, remain quiet on the Holy Day of Sunday. (Code of Justinian, Book III, Title XII, III. THE JUSTINIAN CODE FROM THE CORPUS JURIS CIVILIS. Translated from the original Latin by Samuel P. Scott. Central Trust Company, Cincinnati, 1932).

Shortly after the above decree, Eusebius recorded this about Constantine:

Accordingly he enjoined on all the subjects of the Roman empire to observe the Lord’s day, as a day of rest (Eusebius. Life of Constantine, Book IV, Chapter 18).

Notice that “the Lord’s day” became enjoined by a decree of a Roman Empire. Also notice the following:

There is a large body of civil legislation on the Sunday rest side by side with the ecclesiastical. It begins with an Edict of Constantine, the first Christian emperor, who forbade judges to sit and townspeople to work on Sunday (Slater T. Transcribed by Scott Anthony Hibbs. Sunday. The Catholic Encyclopedia, Volume XIV Copyright © 1912 by Robert Appleton Company Online Edition Copyright © 2003 by K. Knight).

The bolded quote shows one of the first official intertwinings of European politics and Catholic doctrine.

So prominent had Christians and their day become that when the Emperor Constantine proclaimed Sun Day as the weekly holy day for all Romans, some Christians believed that it was for their sake. More likely Constantine, like many Roman aristocrats of the time, was simply trying to find common ground for his mixed pagan and Christian subjects, especially his soldiers. Unity was for the good of the state and the emperors’ power (Harline C. Sunday: A History of the First Day from Babylonia to the Super Bowl. Doubleday, NY, 2007, p. 17).

However, after a time, Constantine did clearly begin to provide more favor the Roman version of Christianity which (like the pagans, but unlike the Church of God) endorsed Sunday. He, the sun-worshiping emperor, then called for the famous Council of Nicea, which took place in 325 A.D. This council decided that Sunday was to be the day of worship and that Passover was to be observed on Sunday (and that eventually became what is known as Easter). After that council, those in the Church of God who kept the Sabbath were considered to be heretics and outcasts and had to flee in the wilderness.

The Emperor authorized persecution. Around 332, Constantine issued what is known as the Edict Against the Heretics,

Victor Constantinus, Maximus Augustus, to the heretics. “Understand now, by this present statute, ye Novatians, Valentinians, Marcionites, Paulians, ye who are called Cataphrygians, and all ye who devise and support heresies by means of your private assemblies, with what a tissue of falsehood and vanity, with what destructive and venomous errors, your doctrines are inseparably interwoven; so that through you the healthy soul is stricken with disease, and the living becomes the prey of everlasting death. Ye haters and enemies of truth and life, in league with destruction! All your counsels are opposed to the truth, but familiar with deeds of baseness; full of absurdities and fictions: and by these ye frame falsehoods, oppress the innocent, and withhold the light from them that believe. Ever trespassing under the mask of godliness, ye fill all things with defilement: ye pierce the pure and guileless conscience with deadly wounds, while ye withdraw, one may almost say, the very light of day from the eyes of men. But why should I particularize, when to speak of your criminality as it deserves demands more time and leisure than I can give? For so long and unmeasured is the catalogue of your offenses, so hateful and altogether atrocious are they, that a single day would not suffice to recount them all. And, indeed, it is well to turn one’s ears and eyes from such a subject, lest by a description of each particular evil, the pure sincerity and freshness of one’s own faith be impaired. Why then do I still bear with such abounding evil; especially since this protracted clemency is the cause that some who were sound are become tainted with this pestilent disease? Why not at once strike, as it were, at the root of so great a mischief by a public manifestation of displeasure?” (Chapter LXIV.—Constantine’s Edict against the Heretics. This document is from the Christian Classics Ethereal Library at Calvin College).

Originally,

As with the Jewish Sabbath, the observance of the Christian Sunday began with sundown on Saturday and lasted till the same time on Sunday (Slater T. Transcribed by Scott Anthony Hibbs Sunday. The Catholic Encyclopedia, Volume XIV Copyright © 1912 by Robert Appleton Company Online Edition Copyright © 2003 by K. Knight).

But this changed for most who observed Sunday, to a midnight to midnight observance.

Many Protestant groups seem to wish to support the agenda of Rome when it comes to Sunday.  Perhaps they should consider what this will really lead to.

EU Stronger From Economic Crisis

The Flag European Union is Based Upon A Painting Allegedly of Mary with a “Halo” of Stars

COGwriter

As I have mentioned before, various German leaders have indicated that the current economic crisis essentially will move the world to embrace the European financial system.  The following news item this week also indicates that it seems to be making the EU stronger:

As Financial Crisis Grows, EU Emerges Stronger

Will anything be left standing after the financial crisis? The EU and its currency are among the few winners.
Spiegel – Nov 27, 2008
The global financial crisis creates new losers each day. So far, though, the EU is looking like a winner. For many countries along the continent’s northern edge, euro-skepticism is a luxury they can no longer afford…

Now, from Iceland to the Czech Republic, previously wary populations are warming to the EU, heaping praise on the very Brussels-based behemoth they had spent so many years deriding.

Denmark and the Euro Effect

The most obvious way the financial crisis has strengthened the image of the EU among the less-than-faithful is by making the euro look like a safehaven. Denmark, one of the few countries that deliberately opted out of the euro, may now be regretting its decision. As Danish prime minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen told fellow party members at an annual conference in October, “the current financial turmoil makes it evident that Denmark has to join the euro,” which he called a source of “political and economical stability.”

Like its Scandinavian neighbors, Denmark has long taken pride in maintaining a degree of independence from Brussels. But now it seems that many are coming around to the view of the Prime Minister who argues that “not being a euro member has its costs.”

For small countries like Denmark, those costs often come in the form of higher interest rates. Because Denmark keeps its currency pegged to the euro, in times of economic turbulence its central bank is forced to take drastic measures to prevent its local currency from depreciating. Right now, Danish interest rates stand at 5 percent, putting the country at a considerable competitive disadvantage to its neighbors in the euro zone countries, whose interest rates recently dropped half a point to 3.25 percent. Further cuts are expected…

Iceland ‘s New-Found Europhilia

Of all the countries on Europe’s periphery, perhaps none has experienced as pronounced a shift in EU sentiment as Iceland, a nation which, not coincidentally, also serves as Ground Zero for the financial crisis. Since January, Iceland’s currency has lost nearly half its value against the euro, plunging the country’s economy into chaos.

At the same time, opinion polling has registered a large shift in public attitudes toward the EU. According to a poll published on Nov. 24 by the Icelandic newspaper Frettabladid, 68 percent of Icelanders now favor joining the euro. Somewhat fewer, 59.6 percent, think the country should join the European Union, but that’s still an 11-point jump from September of 2007, when only 48.9 percent of Icelanders wanted EU membership…

The Celtic Tiger Loses its Claws

By rejecting the Lisbon treaty in a referendum in June, the people of Ireland brought the EU to its knees. Now, after a bruising ride on the financial crisis roller coaster, they might be the ones that get the EU back on its feet…

Why exactly the financial crisis would cause the Irish to reconsider isn’t entirely clear. Unlike Denmark and Iceland, Ireland is already a member of the euro zone. But Steven Collins, political editor for the Irish Times, says the financial crisis has “clearly” been the main factor in moving the debate. Just like in Iceland, the biggest movement in Irish opinion has been with the urban, educated middle-class. “It’s ironic, really,” Collins told SPIEGEL ONLINE, “because the working class are the ones losing their jobs, but it’s the middle class that is paying close attention to the crisis.” Although the urban middle-class tended to support the Lisbon Treaty before, they now do so in overwhelming numbers…

Ever Closer Union

The EU might not be out of the woods yet, but it is in a considerably stronger position heading into 2009 than many feared would be the case six months ago. http://www.spiegel.de/international/europe/0,1518,592953,00.html

I reported about Iceland here recently (Iceland Apparently Wants EU), but the situation with Denmark and Ireland are even more interesting because they are much larger nations.  Actually, even when Ireland rejected the Lisbon treaty, I wrote that the Beast power would still form, but just with some modifications (see UCG, PCG, & LCG on the Irish Lisbon Treaty Rejection)–and it seems likely that I was correct in my assessment in July 2008.

The Living Church of God (LCG) also reported about Europe this week:

EU Leaders Ignore Promises! One of the advertised differences between the “old” European Constitution and the newer and “better” Lisbon Treaty, was the promised elimination of the use of the EU symbols: the flag, the motto, and the anthem. Many EU nations dismissed the need for national referendum on the revised Treaty because of the promised elimination of these “EU symbols of statehood.” The fear among many European nations was that if these EU symbols were used too widely, their own national sovereignty would be in jeopardy. Now that most EU nations have signed on to the Treaty, the European Members of Parliament (MEPs) have decided that the EU Parliament will promote greater use of these symbols to “help people to identify with the union”—despite promises to the contrary. One British party leader was quoted as saying, “We were told that the symbols would disappear… now they are trying to ram them down our throats” (The Times, September 12, 2008). Bible prophecy records that two future kings of the North and South will “speak lies at the same table” (Daniel 11:27). This future king of the North will gain power by apparently peaceful means, but once in power, he will “seize the kingdom by intrigue” (Daniel 11:21). He will also act deceitfully, and become strong with only a small number of people (Daniel 11:23). As we watch the further development of the Beast power in Europe, we may be witnessing the character traits of nations that will become even more deceitful and ambitious in the future.
EU Has Greater Aspirations. The grand vision of the European Union includes pulling in six former Soviet satellite nations—Belarus, Moldova, Ukraine, Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan—over the next several years. These nations desire to join the EU. However, EU leaders are keenly aware of the need to maintain close ties with Russia. The future relationship of these six nations with the EU will be a true balancing act as Russian feelings on the matter are also considered. “The future European Economic Area will require the six states to ‘take over the entire acquis communautaire [the EU’s legal code], including the acceptance of European Court of Justice rulings.’ The Eastern Partnership will aim to create visa free travel in the long-term, but [in the meantime will]…set up Common Application Centres in the six countries to help people enter the EU’s passport-free Schengen zone” (EU Observer, November 24, 2008). For decades, we have understood the prophetic concept of a Beast power arising in Europe made up of 10 nations or regions (see Revelation 17).

As LCG indicated, the truth is that the Europeans are prophesied to emerge as the major player on the world scene. And while multiple factors will contribute to it happening (probably also including policies of the next USA president), the fact is that Europe will be a strong, but fragile, union according to biblical prophecy.

Several articles of possibly related interest may include:

When do the 1335 days, 1290 days, and 1260 days (the time, times, and half a time) of Daniel 12 begin? When does the Bible show that economic collapse will affect the United States?

Tkach: Is Christmas Pagan?

TRANSFORMED FROM TRUTH

Worldwide Church of God Transformed from Truth to Fairy Tales

COGwriter

The Worldwide Church of God just sent out an email of a commentary by its leader J. Tkach asking “Is Christmas Pagan?”

The answer to that question is easy.

Of course it is.

But since he wants people to celebrate it anyway, here is some of what J. Tkach said:

You might be surprised to know that some Christians believe it is a sin to celebrate Christmas.

They contend that Christmas is pagan and God does not want Christians copying pagans.

There is no denying that some of the traditional practices and elements associated with Christmas are similar to those found in ancient pagan religious ceremonies.

It does not follow, however, that Christians are practicing paganism when they use similar practices or elements in worshipping Jesus. The early Christians in fact, succeeded in replacing the pagan celebrations by redeeming and transforming them. Just as an individual sinner who repents becomes redeemed and transformed in Christ, everything God has created for our enjoyment may be redeemed and transformed for use in worship to him.

For example, the pagan Feast of Saturnalia in early Rome was celebrated with a spirit of merriment, giving gifts to children and other forms of entertainment. The fact that pagans gave gifts to their children and celebrated with special meals on certain days of the year does not mean that such activities on Christian days and seasons of worship are sinful.

The truth is that neither Jesus, the original apostles, nor any who professed Christ can be shown to have observed Christmas until at least 150 years after Jesus died.  And actually, Rome did not actually adopt it until sometime in the 4th century and Constantinople did not adopt it until later in the 4th century.

Around the beginning of the 3rd century, Tertullian (the so-called “father of Latin theology”) warned that to participate in the winter celebrations made one beholding to pagan gods.

Notice what Tertullian wrote about winter celebrations, such as Saturnalia (from a pagan deity whose name meant plentiful):

The Minervalia are as much Minerva’s, as the Saturnalia Saturn’s; Saturn’s, which must necessarily be celebrated even by little slaves at the time of the Saturnalia. New-year’s gifts likewise must be caught at, and the Septimontium kept; and all the presents of Midwinter and the feast of Dear Kinsmanship must be exacted; the schools must be wreathed with flowers; the flamens’ wives and the aediles sacrifice; the school is honoured on the appointed holy-days. The same thing takes place on an idol’s birthday; every pomp of the devil is frequented. Who will think that these things are befitting to a Christian master, unless it be he who shall think them suitable likewise to one who is not a master? (Tertullian. On Idolatry, Chapter X. Translated by S. Thelwall. Excerpted from Ante-Nicene Fathers, Volume 3. Edited by Alexander Roberts and James Donaldson. American Edition, 1885. Online Edition Copyright © 2004 by K. Knight).

But, however, the majority (of Christians) have by this time induced the belief in their mind that it is pardonable if at any time they do what the heathen do, for fear “the Name be blasphemed”…To live with heathens is lawful, to die with them is not. Let us live with all; let us be glad with them, out of community of nature, not of superstition. We are peers in soul, not in discipline; fellow-possessors of the world, not of error. But if we have no right of communion in matters of this kind with strangers, how far more wicked to celebrate them among brethren! Who can maintain or defend this?…By us,…the Saturnalia and New-year’s and Midwinter’s festivals and Matronalia are frequented–presents come and go–New-year’s gifts–games join their noise–banquets join their din! Oh better fidelity of the nations to their own sect, which claims no solemnity of the Christians for itself!…Not the Lord’s day, not Pentecost, even it they had known them, would they have shared with us; for they would fear lest they should seem to be Christians. We are not apprehensive lest we seem to be heathens! (Tertullian. On Idolatry, Chapter XIV. Translated by S. Thelwall. Excerpted from Ante-Nicene Fathers, Volume 3. Edited by Alexander Roberts and James Donaldson. American Edition, 1885. Online Edition Copyright © 2004 by K. Knight).

But “let your works shine,” saith He; but now all our shops and gates shine! You will now-a-days find more doors of heathens without lamps and laurel-wreaths than of Christians. What does the case seem to be with regard to that species (of ceremony) also? If it is an idol’s honour, without doubt an idol’s honour is idolatry. If it is for a man’s sake, let us again consider that all idolatry is for man’s sake; let us again consider that all idolatry is a worship done to men, since it is generally agreed even among their worshippers that aforetime the gods themselves of the nations were men; and so it makes no difference whether that superstitious homage be rendered to men of a former age or of this. Idolatry is condemned, not on account of the persons which are set up for worship, but on account of those its observances, which pertain to demons (Tertullian. On Idolatry, Chapter XV. Translated by S. Thelwall. Excerpted from Ante-Nicene Fathers, Volume 3. Edited by Alexander Roberts and James Donaldson. American Edition, 1885. Online Edition Copyright © 2004 by K. Knight).

What Tertullian seems to be saying is that observing mid-winter celebrations make Christians appear to be followers of pagan gods, and since the pagans would not intentionally celebrate days considered by many to be Christian, Christians should not celebrate days that are honored by the heathen. Specifically, he felt that those who profess Christ should not celebrate Saturnalia, New Year’s, or other pagan days, as even the observance is a form of idolatry (click here for an article titled Is January 1st a Date for Christians Celebrate?).

Since the modern Christmas celebration is at the same time as the old Gentile Saturnalia holiday (and with many of the same elements, like wreaths and gift-giving), it is clear that Tertullian is condemning these practices by stating that those that keep it are of the pagan god Saturn. He also wrote against winter giving:

…gifts like those you have in the Saturnalia! (Tertullian. De Fuga in Persecutione, Chapter 13. Excerpted from Ante-Nicene Fathers, Volume 4. Edited by Alexander Roberts & James Donaldson. American Edition, 1885. Online Edition Copyright © 2004 by K. Knight).

So basically, those who teach “Jesus is the reason for the season” are in error. The reason for the season appears to be that some of those who professed Christ, but did not want to leave the world, wanted to have a party. And did not care if the party was related to pagan gods.

It is interesting to note that Tertullian objected to keeping a celebration lasting until the Roman New Years, putting up wreaths, and giving gifts.  Since most of these quotes come from his writing titles “On Idolatry” apparently he considered those practices as idolatrous.

It seems to me that no true Christians would do this, only those who were somewhat nominal, but who had been accepted, to some degree, by part of the Greco-Roman confederation.  His complaints apparently did not stop this from happening, though his objections certainly have biblical support.

Even the Rheims‘ version of the New Testament (a Catholic approved translation) states the following:

15. And what agreement with Christ and Belial? or what part hath the faithful with the
infidel?
16. And what agreement hath the temple of God with Idols? For you are the temple of the
living God. as God saith, Then I will dwell, and walk in them, and will be their God: and
they shall be my people.
17. For the which cause, Go out of the midst of them, and separate yourselves. saith our
Lord, and touch not the unclean: and I will receive you (2 Corinthians 6:15-17, The Original And True Rheims New Testament Of Anno Domini 1582. Prepared and Edited by Dr. William von Peters, Ph.D. Copyright © 1998, Dr. William G. von Peters. Ph.D. 2004, copyright assigned to VSC Corp.).

So unclean practices associated with idols are prohibited by God; and they are sinful (cf. 1 John 5:17). Does not that include celebrating as the idolaters celebrate?

The fact is that even early Greco-Roman leaders were worried that their followers were embracing the practices of the pagans in honoring Saturnalia and Mithras.  Yet, ultimately those in the compromising churches compromised and even selected the date of Mithras birthday celebration as the date to celebrate the birth of our Savior.

Notice the following from The Catholic Encyclopedia:

Mithraism A pagan religion consisting mainly of the cult of the ancient Indo-Iranian Sun-god Mithra. It entered Europe from Asia Minor after Alexander’s conquest, spread rapidly over the whole Roman Empire at the beginning of our era, reached its zenith during the third century, and vanished under the repressive regulations of Theodosius at the end of the fourth century…Helios Mithras is one god…Sunday was kept holy in honour of Mithra, and the sixteenth of each month was sacred to him as mediator. The 25 December was observed as his birthday, the natalis invicti, the rebirth of the winter-sun, unconquered by the rigours of the season (Arendzen. J.P. Transcribed by John Looby. Mithraism. The Catholic Encyclopedia, Volume X. Published 1911. New York: Robert Appleton Company. Nihil Obstat, October 1, 1911. Remy Lafort, S.T.D., Censor. Imprimatur. +John Cardinal Farley, Archbishop of New York).

Does picking December 25th sound like a change that God would approve?

Furthermore, those celebrating the 25th continued with the gift giving and other pagan practices associated with those celebrations.  And those practices continue to this day (which is why today is considered to be the biggest shopping day, probably in the entire world, but definitely in the United States).

But those practices and dates are not in the Bible.

While you obey God this year or instead follow the traditions of men that involve honoring pagan gods?

India: Over 100 Dead

Thursday, November 27th, 2008

India

COGwriter

It has been about 14 hours since I first posted about the terrible situation in India.  Here is a much more recent news update:

Indian commandos battle Islamist gunmen, over 100 dead

by Phil Hazlewood Phil Hazlewood 43 mins ago

MUMBAI (AFP) – Indian commandos were on Thursday battling Islamist gunmen who launched coordinated attacks against luxury hotels and other targets in Mumbai, taking foreign hostages and killing over 100 people.

India’s prime minister Manmohan Singh said the attackers had come from ” outside the country ,” and also warned “neighbours” who provide a haven to anti-India militants — seen as veiled reference to arch-rival Pakistan

Some 200 people were still believed trapped in another five-star hotel, the Oberoi/Trident, the hotel group’s vice-chairman said, while a Jewish rabbi was being held at an office-residential complex which also houses a Jewish centre…

State officials said 101 people were killed in the assaults, involving small groups of gunmen armed with AK-47s and grenades. The attacks began around 10:30 pm (1700 GMT) Wednesday.

Up to 287 other people were also reported wounded.

Nine foreign nationals were among the dead — including a Japanese businessman, an Australian and an Italian — while Americans, Israelis and Canadians were said to be among those held…

Witnesses to the carnage said the gunmen had been hunting for British and US nationals.

“They were very young, like boys really, wearing jeans and T-shirts,” said one British guest at the Taj, Rakesh Patel, who was among a dozen people herded together by two heavily-armed men and taken to the hotel’s upper floors.

“They said they wanted anyone with British and American passports and then they took us up the stairs. I think they wanted to take us to the roof,” he said, adding that he and another hostage managed to escape on the 18th floor.

The United States and Britain led global condemnation, with Washington describing the attacks as “horrific”, and US president-elect Barack Obama pledging to work with India to “root out and destroy terrorist networks”. http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20081127/ts_afp/indiaattacks

Notice one of the curses to the descendants of Israel for disobedience:

14’But if you do not obey Me, and do not observe all these commandments, 15 and if you despise My statutes, or if your soul abhors My judgments, so that you do not perform all My commandments, but break My covenant, 16 I also will do this to you: I will even appoint terror over you (Leviticus 26:14-16).

This incident in India is one of many that I suspect will partially fulfill the above prophecy.

The way I understand it, the terrorists demanded all the British and American passports at one or more hotels and targetted those from Anglo-American nations for death.

Actions like that are terrifying and apparently are designed to terrorize those from Anglo-American countries from traveling.

We live in perilous times (cf. 2 Timothy 3:1).

The following disturbing item was in the news today:

78 Die in Mumbai Shootings, Officials Say

By RAMOLA TALWAR BADAM

MUMBAI, India (Nov. 26) – Teams of heavily armed gunmen stormed luxury hotels, a popular tourist attraction and a crowded train station in at least seven attacks in India’s financial capital, killing at least 78 people and wounding at least 200, officials said Thursday.

The gunmen were specifically targeting Britons and Americans and a top police official said the gunmen are holding hostages at two luxury hotels, the Taj Mahal and Oberoi hotels.

A media report said a little-known group, the Deccan Mujahideen, has claimed responsibility for the attacks. The Press Trust of India news agency said Thursday the group sent emails to several media outlets.

The gunmen also attacked police headquarters in south Mumbai, the area where most of the attacks, which began late Wednesday and continued into Thursday morning, took place…

Alex Chamberlain said a gunman, a young man of 22 or 23, ushered 30 or 40 people from the restaurant into a stairway and ordered everyone to put up their hands.

“They were talking about British and Americans specifically. There was an Italian guy, who, you know, they said: ‘Where are you from?” and he said he’s from Italy and they said ‘fine’ and they left him alone. And I thought: ‘Fine, they’re going to shoot me if they ask me anything — and thank God they didn’t,” he said. http://news.aol.com/article/78-die-in-mumbai-shootings-reports-say/261363?icid=200100397x1214030726x1200873531

The First Thanksgiving, painting by Jean Leon Gerome Ferris (1863–1930)

COGwriter

November 27, 2008 is the date for the American holiday of Thanksgiving this year.

Here is some of what LCG’s Richard Ames wrote about it:

On Thanksgiving Day, millions gather with their families and friends to enjoy good food and fellowship, and the blessings of living in a prosperous nation. They enjoy the blessings of freedom and opportunity. But do they thank God for their blessings? Do they understand why their nation has been blessed? In particular, do we who live in the United States and British-descended nations understand why we have received blessings unparalleled in the history of mankind?

Whether it is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November as in the U.S., or the second Monday of October as in Canada, Thanksgiving Day is a time when people are supposed to count their blessings. We who live in these nations have received blessings unprecedented in the history of mankind. In the 20th century, the U.S. and British Commonwealth became the richest and most powerful nation and group of nations in the world. But that national power and prestige has greatly declined. The U.S. was once an economic powerhouse, and nations around the world eagerly bought its exports. Today, however, the U.S. is the world’s largest debtor, with a national deficit of more than $8.5 trillion—more than $28,000 for each American man, woman and child…

Scripture records Jacob passing this blessing to his grandsons Ephraim and Manasseh: “The Angel who has redeemed me from all evil, bless the lads; let my name [Israel] be named upon them [Ephraim and Manasseh], and the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac; and let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth” (Genesis 48:16).

These blessings are called the birthright promises. These prophetic promises, which included wealth, abundance, military power, and international dominance, were to be fulfilled in the descendants of Joseph. It may be surprising to many of you, but those divine blessings given to Manasseh and Ephraim have been fulfilled in the U.S. and British-descended nations…

At Thanksgiving, we give thanks to God for the beauty and abundance with which He has blessed our countries. But at the same time we should be deeply concerned as our national character becomes more and more blemished with immorality. Will our Western nations continue to disobey the Ten Commandments and increasingly reject the biblical truths that once led to their prosperity—and that lead to true life, liberty and happiness?…

Today’s Christians are also thankful for the promised future. We are thankful for the true Gospel—the message Jesus preached about the coming Kingdom of God on earth, when all nations will learn the way to peace. We know that the world will not end in a nuclear holocaust or be snuffed out by a biological pandemic—because Jesus Christ promised that for the elect’s sake He would return, just in time to prevent us from destroying ourselves (Matthew 24:22)!

The world needs the Kingdom of God on earth. Do you realize how much you are blessed compared to many countries around the world? As of October 2008, the United Nations labeled as “Least Developed Countries” the 49 nations with annual per capita gross national incomes below $750. Many of those countries have annual per person incomes below $400! Can you imagine living in such poverty? How thankful are you? As Jesus said, “To whom much is given, from him much will be required!” (Luke 12:48). We must be faithful stewards of our blessings, and we must be willing, nationally and individually, to give to others. We especially need to be giving the good news of the Gospel to the rest of the world! Our national purpose should be to live God’s way of life—and to share that way of life with the rest of the world! God’s ways should be our nation’s ways.

While all should give thanks to God, those in the Anglo-American nations should also realize that because of who were the majority that they descended from, they will receive the blessings AND the cursings of the children of Israel.

Gerald Flurry of the Philadelphia Church of God
Gerald Flurry

COGwriter

Several people have contacted me regarding the Philadelphia Church of God (PCG) being on FOX News channel 25 this week.  PCG is headed by a leader that I believe is false.

Although it takes a while to load, here are links to each of the segments:

http://www.kokh.com/players/news/special_reports/vid_152.shtml
http://www.kokh.com/players/news/special_reports/vid_153.shtml

Having watched both segments, there really was not much to it, though some of the innuendos, especially by the news narrator seemed out-of-line to me (he seemed to want to paint PCG into certain corners that they did not deserve–and Stephen Flurry somewhat put one of the innuendos to rest when he indicated that his father’s salary was only about $65.000 per year).

The first segment commented that PCG brings in around 15 million per year and is spending about that amount on its new auditorium, which is expected to be completed next year or so.  Below is a drawing of what it is expected to look like:

Rendering of Armstrong Auditorium (Rees Associates)

The Bible, of course, warns that because of false leaders (and false messages cf. Galatians 1:6-7) the truth of God will be blasphemed (2 Peter 2:1-3).  And simply having buildings that look similar to those that Herbert W. Armstrong had built does not change the fact that the message of PCG is not the same as Herbert W. Armstrong’s was.

The following statement from Stephen Flurry about his father in the second segment seemed worthy of comment:

“We certainly believe that he {Gerald Flurry} speaks for God.”

Of course, similar to Ronald Weinland, Gerald Flurry is a self-appointed prophet, and hence I do not believe that he speaks for God.

Furthermore, I believe that Gerald Flurry has made many pronouncements and policies which are opposed to the truth.

There are many problems with PCG, and the self-appointed prophet is a major reason for that.

Since I feel that Gerald Flurry is a false leader and not God’s prophet, I feel that he has (and continues) to cause the truth problems.

Laodicea
Laodicea Has Many Scattered Structures that Are Relatively Ineffective

COGwriter

The November 2008 edition of UCG’s United News arrived last night and contained the audited financial statements for the United Church of God.

The statements show that UCG’s income was up 2.3% for its 2007-2008 fiscal year (LCG’s was up 6.9% for the most comparable period).

As many have asked me about how LCG differs from UCG, a comparison of how they spend their income, in my view, helps answer a lot of questions.

Brief Financial Comparison of US Income (Both Based on Audited Statements)

For its fiscal year ending 6/30/08 UCG grossed $23,927,074. It spent 5,734,800 (24.0%) for ‘public proclamation’; it spent 4,228,695 for managing its meetings and ‘home office’ (17.7%); and 13,375,144 (55.9%) for the field ministry/local churches/FOT/International support, and increased reserves by 590,435. For its fiscal year ending 12/31/07 LCG grossed 11,887,020 and spent 5,446,269 on public proclamation, 823,910 on HQ administration, 5,452,938 to ‘feed the flock’ and increased reserves by 163,903.

If you gave $100.00 to the United Church of God or the Living Church of God, here is where your money went:

.......................................United Church of God....Living Church of God
1st Commission to Proclaim the Gospel to the World....$23.97........$45.82
2nd Commission to Feed the Flock (and Field Ministry)..55.90.........45.87
Headquarters/Home Office...............................17.67..........6.92
Change in Reserves......................................2.46..........1.39
Total................................................$100.00.......$100.00

UCG’s headline claim was “United’s Financial Statements Again Reflect God’s Blessings”.  And on a positive note, it did spend a lower percentage of income supporting its home office staff and a higher percentage on public proclamation than it ever has before.  But I still have concerns about its priorities and entire message (it is biblically lacking in several areas in my opinion).

Jesus taught:

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also (Mattew 6:21).

I went with LCG because of Gospel proclamation emphasis and biblical church governance. It is interesting that UCG spent almost 3 times as high a percentage on governance than LCG does (and over 5 times as much in actual cash, UCG spent $4,226,695 vs. LCG’s 823,910).

Which form of governance is more cost-effective? Which form places the higher priority on proclaiming the Gospel?

With half the income, LCG spends similar amounts of actual cash as UCG does to proclaim the Gospel.  LCG also reaches several times as many people over television than UCG does (actually, in the last two months alone LCG has reached about as many people on television as UCG has since it began in 1995).  LCG also produces twice the number of magazines (Tomorrow’s World vs. Good News) on a per member basis than UCG does.

“He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

Should the Church Still Try to Place its Top Priority on Proclaiming the Gospel or Did Herbert W. Armstrong Change that Priority for the Work? Some say the Church should mainly feed the flock now as that is what Herbert W. Armstrong reportedly said. Is that what he said? Is that what the Bible says? What did Paul and Herbert W. Armstrong expect from evangelists?
The Philadelphia Church Era was predominant circa 1933 A.D. to 1986 A.D. The old Radio Church of God and old Worldwide Church of God, now basically the Living Church of God.
The Laodicean Church Era was predominant circa 1986 A.D. to present. Non-Philadelphians who mainly descended from the old WCG.

Russian Professor Says U.S. Will Break Up After Economic Crisis

Bloomberg – Nov 24, 2008

A professor at the diplomatic academy of Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the U.S. will break into six parts because of the nation’s financial crisis.

“The dollar isn’t secured by anything,” Igor Panarin said in an interview transcribed by Russian newspaper Izvestia today. “The country’s foreign debt has grown like an avalanche; this is a pyramid, which has to collapse.”

Panarin said in the interview that the financial crisis will worsen, unemployment will rise and people will lose their savings — factors that will cause the country’s breakup.

“Dissatisfaction is growing, and it is only being held back at the moment by the elections, and the hope” that President- elect Barack Obama “can work miracles,” he said. “But when spring comes, it will be clear that there are no miracles.”

The U.S. will fracture into six parts: the Pacific coast; the South; Texas; the Atlantic coast, central states and the northern states.

“Now we will see a change to the regulatory system on a global financial scale: America will cease to be the world’s regulator,” to be replaced by China and Russia, he said.

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601103&sid=a3sayDZz.QKc&refer=us

The USA will be destroyed, but I do not believe that it would first break up into six pieces.

But, while Russia, China, and India will rise up, the real economic power will be Europe.

VS.
Ronald Weinland Says His Books and His Interpretations of the Bible Are What He Wants Potential Supporters to Study. The COGwriter Site Instead Urges Those Interested in Him and End-Time Prophecies to Spend More Time Checking His Writings with the Bible.

COGwriter

This past Sunday night (November 23, 2008 at 10:00 pm), CGPFK’s Ronald Weinland was on Australian television.  Here are excerpts from the officially produced transcript:

Ron Weinland
As far as prophecy is concerned beginning in mid April this year we begin a period of what is known as 1260 days, and that’s 3½ years. A lot of people refer to it as the 3½ year period of a great tribulation that’s going to be on this earth. And that’s exactly where we are in time…

Narrator
Ron claims he’s one of two end-time prophets, or witnesses described in Chapter 11 of Revelation.

Ron Weinland
A few years ago God made it clear to me that I was a prophet. That time when he first began to reveal that to me I believed that I was a prophet by what’s referred to in Scripture as interpretationally, in other words being able to interpret prophesies and know the meaning. And there were a lot of things that began to be given concerning the end time…

5. Is apocalyptic thinking dangerous, or unhealthy?

Narrator
Such misunderstandings could well prove dangerous…Ron Weinland’s interpretation of the Book of Revelation gives him – as an end-time prophet – the right to injure or even kill those who oppose him.

“And if anyone wants to harm the witnesses, fire pours from their mouth and consumes their foes; anyone who wants to harm them must be killed in this manner… They have authority over the waters to turn them into blood, and to strike the earth with every kind of plague”.
(Revelation 11:5-6)

Ron Weinland
I am not at ease fully with this yet. God is teaching me things as we go along here. I cannot imagine saying certain things that are going to be responsible for the death of people. But yet again I can, because there are certain things going to take place where God is going to intervene and destroy millions, literally hundreds, a few hundred million right there at the very end and on the very last day before Jesus Christ returns…

Narrator
Ron Weinland has no doubt his interpretation of the bible will prevail…

Ron Weinland
Oftentimes people ask me the question of whether or not I feel that I’m wrong, or ‘What if?’ They keep asking, ‘What if? What if?’ How can I answer that? To me there is no ‘What if?’ It is. It is what it is. And there is no doubt in my mind, as sure as the sun’s coming up in the morning, and it’s going down this evening, this afternoon. That’s just the way it is, it’s that clear, it’s that absolute. There is no altering of anything. http://www.abc.net.au/compass/s2428806.htm

Of course, unless Ronald Weinland mispoke when he said April, this must have been taped long ago as Ronald Weinland changed when the  3 1/2 years (1260 days) started from April 17, 2008 until December 14, 2008 (see Ronald Weinland’s 1290 Days Started, Again, Today)–thus he altered much, and thus his statement was ABSOLUTELY wrong. His CGPFK’s website now claims:

1260 Days: The blowing of the first Trumpet will occur/occurred on the 14th of December, 2008. This is the beginning of the Great Tribulation and 3 1/2 years until the return of Jesus Christ on the day of Pentecost. The beginning of the fall of the USA and other Israelite countries begins from the start of the 1260 days. God will reveal this period of time for the first Four Trumpets of 6 to 12 months.

Thus, this is an alteration from April 17, 2008.

Also, Ronald Weinland has shown no hesitation about pronouncing his curses of death to COG leaders and anyone who is critical of his false teachings (see Ronald Weinland Again Calls for Death).

Sadly, many are listening to his message because of the turmoils in the world.  However, as regular readers of this news page are aware, while we may be near the time that Jesus referred to as “the beginning of sorrows”, the Great Tribulation (the 1260 days) cannot begin for at least 3 1/2 years from now, which means that it cannot start prior to 2012.

Those who look to Ronald Weinland more than their Bibles will continue to be deceived.  Here are two prophecies that seem to apply to Ronald Weinland:

21 “And if you say in your heart, ‘How shall we know the word which the LORD has not spoken?’– 22 when a prophet speaks in the name of the LORD, if the thing does not happen or come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD has not spoken; the prophet has spoken it presumptuously; you shall not be afraid of him (Deuteronomy 18:21-22).

1 But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction. 2 And many will follow their destructive ways, because of whom the way of truth will be blasphemed. 3 By covetousness they will exploit you with deceptive words; for a long time their judgment has not been idle, and their destruction does not slumber (2 Peter 2:1-3).

Ronald Weinland needs to repent and those following him need to check out what the Bible warns against false and heretical leaders like him.

Those who really want to know what the Bible teaches will happen related to the the 1335 days, the 1290 days, and the 1260 days of Daniel, when the 6000 years should end, etc. should read the following articles:

Who is the King of the North? Is there one? Do biblical and Roman Catholic prophecies point to the same leader? Should he be followed? Who will be the King of the North discussed in Daniel 11? When do the 1335 days, 1290 days, and 1260 days (the time, times, and half a time) of Daniel 12 begin? When does the Bible show that economic collapse will affect the United States?
Is There A Future King of the South? Some no longer believe there needs to be. Might Egypt, Islam, Iran, Arabs, or Ethiopia be involved? What does the Bible say?
Does God Have a 6,000 Year Plan? What Year Does the 6,000 Years End? Was a 6000 year time allowed for humans to rule followed by a literal thousand year reign of Christ on Earth taught by the early Christians? When does the six thousand years of human rule end?
End of Mayan Calendar 2012–Might 2012 Mean Something? There is a Mayan calendar prediction for change in 2012. 2012 changes were also centuries ago predicted by the Hopi Native Americans (the Hindus may have some predictions for the next decade as well). Can the great tribulation start before 2012?
Can the Great Tribulation Begin in 2009, 2010, or 2011? Can the Great Tribulation begin today? When is the earliest that the Great Tribulation can begin? What is the Day of the Lord?
Who Are The Two Witnesses? What is their job? What does the Bible reveal? What has the Church of God taught on this subject? Might even Roman Catholic prophecies give some clues here?
Why Prophecy? Because the World Will Not End Next Week Some question or downplay the role of prophecy. This article gives some of the biblical reasons what it is important and explains why the world cannot end for at least 3 1/2 years from now.
Why Be Concerned About False and Heretical Leaders? There have been many false leaders–here is some of why you should be concerned about them.

Those interested in more of Ronald Weinland’s teachings may wish to read the often updated article:

Concerns About Ronald Weinland’s Church of God-Preparing for the Kingdom of God Ronald Weinland falsely claims to be one of the two witnesses God is raising up and that the end will come in 2008.
