The mystery surrounding 3I/ATLAS has captured the imagination of many, from leading astronomers to pop culture A-listers like Kim Kardashian and tech mogul Elon Musk.
When astronomers first spotted 3I/ATLAS on 1 July 2025 using the ATLAS survey telescope in Chile, it was immediately clear that this was no ordinary space rock.
As only the third confirmed interstellar object ever recorded – after ʻOumuamua in 2017 and 2I/Borisov in 2019 – 3I/ATLAS sparked attention for its icy core enveloped by a coma, the luminous halo of gas and dust.
Its speed and trajectory show that it’s not gravitationally bound to the Sun – meaning it must have originated in another star system and wandered into ours by chance.
While NASA officially identified 3I/ATLAS as a comet and not an asteroid last week, some scientists, most prominently Professor Avi Loeb, a theoretical astrophysicist at Harvard University, has suggested its unusual features could hint at signs of alien technology. …

Basically, 3I/ATLAS is a comet that is not acting the way astronomers expect comets to act.

The “Wormwood” Effect: Poisoning the Waters
The fragment’s composition, rich in carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and carbonyl sulfide, proves catastrophic. As the debris burns up and disperses, it releases a massive cloud of toxic compounds into the atmosphere. These chemicals react with water vapor, forming acidic aerosols that precipitate as rain over a third of the Pacific Ocean and nearby landmasses, including parts of Asia, Australia, and the Americas. The rain, laced with sulfur compounds like carbonyl sulfide, drastically lowers the pH of rivers, lakes, and groundwater in affected regions, rendering them bitter and undrinkable—mirroring the “waters became wormwood” prophecy.
The environmental impact is severe. Fish die-offs occur in rivers and coastal waters, and agriculture in affected areas collapses due to contaminated irrigation sources. Human consumption of the tainted water leads to widespread illness, with millions affected and thousands dying from acute poisoning, particularly in regions with limited access to clean water. The scale of the disaster—impacting roughly a third of the world’s freshwater resources in the affected zones—aligns with the biblical description of widespread suffering.
Public and Theological Reaction
The event sparks global panic. Social media platforms, including X, erupt with posts linking 3I/ATLAS-B to the Wormwood prophecy, fueled by videos and articles from sources like YouTube channels speculating on apocalyptic signs. Religious communities, particularly those with historicist or futurist interpretations of Revelation, see the event as a fulfillment of prophecy, pointing to the comet’s interstellar origin and its “falling from heaven” as a blazing object. Some cite the Ukrainian term for Artemisia (Chornóbyl) and the Chernobyl disaster as a precedent, arguing that 3I/ATLAS-B’s chemical fallout is a modern parallel to the biblical “bitter waters.
“Skeptics, however, argue that the disaster is a natural consequence of a rare interstellar comet’s composition and trajectory, not a divine act. Scientists note that carbonyl sulfide, detected in 3I/ATLAS, is a potent greenhouse gas and can form toxic byproducts in the atmosphere, explaining the environmental damage. They criticize the lack of early warning, pointing to the comet’s initial obscurity against the Galactic Center’s dense star fields as a reason for delayed detection.
Speculative Twist: Alien Technology?
A minority, led by controversial astrophysicist Avi Loeb, suggests 3I/ATLAS might not be a natural comet at all. While Wormwood of the Apocalypse looks to be a comet, as I wrote in August 2025 (see Could Comet 3I/ATLAS be Wormwood?) 3I/ATLAS is not it. It is too early.
Why?
Over 1900 years ago, the Apostle John was inspired to write about Wormwood and more in the Book of Revelation. If you look at the sequence of events that precede Wormwood, it is obvious to all that it cannot happen between now and next month. Notice that the first nine verses happen prior to Wormwood falling from heaven:
1 When He opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour. 2 And I saw the seven angels who stand before God, and to them were given seven trumpets. 3 Then another angel, having a golden censer, came and stood at the altar. He was given much incense, that he should offer it with the prayers of all the saints upon the golden altar which was before the throne. 4 And the smoke of the incense, with the prayers of the saints, ascended before God from the angel’s hand. 5 Then the angel took the censer, filled it with fire from the altar, and threw it to the earth. And there were noises, thunderings, lightnings, and an earthquake.
6 So the seven angels who had the seven trumpets prepared themselves to sound.
7 The first angel sounded: And hail and fire followed, mingled with blood, and they were thrown to the earth. And a third of the trees were burned up, and all green grass was burned up.
8 Then the second angel sounded: And something like a great mountain burning with fire was thrown into the sea, and a third of the sea became blood. 9 And a third of the living creatures in the sea died, and a third of the ships were destroyed.
10 Then the third angel sounded: And a great star fell from heaven, burning like a torch, and it fell on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water. 11 The name of the star is Wormwood. A third of the waters became wormwood, and many men died from the water, because it was made bitter. (Revelation 8:1-11)
Notice that somehow Wormwood makes water bitter.
This could be because it may be a comet. Comets tend to come with cyanogen gas–when that mixes with water to form hydrogen cyanide, it has an almond odor and bitter taste.
Yet, it should also be noted that there are MANY EVENTS that also have to take place before the above events as well. Because of that, it is biblically impossible for the Earth to be destroyed by something from space for years.
Notice that Wormwood does not fall until after the third trumpet associated with the seventh seal of Revelation is blown. Well, this would mean that the fifth and sixth seal would also have already been opened–which are mentioned in Revelation 6:7-17, and the 144,000 numbered as shown in Revelation 7. And I should add that the fifth seal of Revelation cannot possibly be opened for at least 3 1/2 years from now (see When Will the Great Tribulation Begin?), with over 4 years the likely minimum.
Wormwood does exist–but again Wormwood cannot hit for several years at the earliest. That does not mean that there cannot be any problems from meteorites, comets, asteroids, solar flares, etc. But it does mean that this age will not end for at least several years.

Anyway, 3I/ATLAS is a comet. It is not an alien ship. It is not Wormwood.
But Wormwood will one day hit the earth.
