There was a report in our newspaper yesterday that the price of cotton was rose by 80% in the past year or so.  I also have seen about a dozen reports on rising food prices in the past few days.  Here are a few of them:

S. Lanka warns of high food prices after floods

(AFP) – 17 January 2011

COLOMBO — Sri Lanka warned Monday that food prices could shoot up after devastating floods in the north and east of the country destroyed rice and vegetable crops.  http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5jTrDg1a_J6v6fTKGCEwW4eYOJ2kQ?docId=CNG.a57570dd059535feb8d14825eda534cf.251

Food inflation has already hit double digits in China, India and Brazil. It’s not hard to see why when you look at how some of the major soft commodities have performed over the last 12 months:

  • Corn: + 69%
  • Wheat: + 47%
  • Soy Beans: + 44%
  • Sugar: + 15%
  • Coffee: + 65%
  • Cotton: + 105%

(Trailing 12-month price moves as of January 12, 2011)

While these price spikes are causing food and clothing prices to rise, those effects will undoubtedly be exacerbated by the simultaneous rise in energy and raw materials…http://seekingalpha.com/article/246895-why-are-commodity-prices-rising-let-me-count-the-ways

Retail meat prices in December climb by most in seven years
Drovers – Jan 14, 2011

Retail meat prices in December posted the biggest increase in seven years, with pork jumping the most in 14 years, contributing to accelerating food inflation that’s expected to take a larger chunk out of consumers’ pocketbooks this year.

A meat price index tracked by the Bureau of Labor Statistics rose 7.2 percent last month compared to December 2009, the largest year-over-year gain for that month since 2003, according to a report released today.

Prices for milk, butter and other dairy products have also increased amid stronger exports and tighter global butter supplies. A dairy products price index last month rose 0.4 percent from November and 3.7 percent from December 2009, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Fresh, whole milk averaged $3.32 a gallon nationwide last month, down 1 cent from November but up 21 cents, or 6.8 percent, from a year earlier,

For the broader food at home category, retail prices during December rose 0.1 percent from November and 1.7 percent from December 2009, according to the Labor Department.http://www.drovers.com/news_editorial.asp?pgID=675&ed_id=8418

The Great Food Crisis Of 2011
“Nowhere to Hide” from Rising Food Prices
Food prices set to rise after US cuts crop stock forecasts

Of course, food shortages are prophesied. Jesus warned that “famines” would be part of the “beginning of sorrows” (Matthew 24:7-8). In the Book of Revelation, food price inflation is predicted with the ride of the third horseman (Revelation 6:6).  I suspect that the situation in Tunisia and the Middle East could play a role in the rise of the coming King of the South.

Related to the third horseman of Revelation, Evangelist Richard Ames wrote:

The third seal presents a rider on a black horse, representing the scarcity of food and the resulting famine…Cynics say there have always been wars, famines and pestilences. But, as time goes on, we will see the four horsemen of the apocalypse intensify their ride, with increasing global consequences. (Ames R. The Middle East in Prophecy. Living Church of God, 2006, p. 24)

While we are not yet to the final intensified ride of that horseman, part of the “beginning of sorrows” that Jesus referred to could have started. Food shortages will affect Americans more than most here believe.

As Jesus said:

37 And what I say to you, I say to all: Watch! (Mark 13:36-37)

Food prices are something to watch.

Tougher times are coming. And for some parts of the world these tougher time may be here now. People who can prepare, should. Both spiritually and physically.
