United Nations insists ‘climate change’ is real and steps need to be taken: but which steps?

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon (World Economic Forum)

COGwriter

The United Nations released its latest report about climate change:

November 2, 2014

COPENHAGEN, Denmark– Climate change is happening, it’s almost entirely man’s fault and limiting its impacts may require reducing greenhouse gas emissions to zero this century, the U.N.’s panel on climate science said Sunday.

The … final volume of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s giant climate assessment didn’t offer any surprises, nor was it expected to since it combined the findings of three earlier reports released in the past 13 months.

But it underlined the scope of the climate challenge in stark terms. Emissions, mainly from the burning of fossil fuels, may need to drop to zero by the end of this century for the world to have a decent chance of keeping the temperature rise below a level that many consider dangerous. Failure to do so, which could require deployment of technologies that suck greenhouse gases out of the atmosphere, could lock the world on a trajectory with “irreversible” impacts on people, like altering the male-female ratio, and on the environment, the report said. Some impacts are already being observed, including rising sea levels, a warmer and more acidic ocean, melting glaciers and Arctic sea ice and more frequent and intense heat waves.

“Science has spoken. There is no ambiguity in their message. Leaders must act. Time is not on our side,” U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said at the report’s launch in Copenhagen.  …

Heat stroke, cardiac arrest and other heat-related illnesses are expected to increase as the number of extremely hot days rises, said lead author Dr. Jonathan Patz, director of the Global Health Institute at the University of Wisconsin in Madison.

“Nearly every place east of the Rocky Mountains will see an increase in extreme hot days in the years to come,” Patz said. “Urban areas like New York City and Milwaukee are expected to triple the number of extremely hot days they currently have.”  …

“We have the means to limit climate change,” IPCC chairman Rajendra Pachauri said. “All we need is the will to change, which we trust will be motivated by knowledge and an understanding of the science of climate change.”  http://www.cbsnews.com/news/climate-change-is-happening-and-it-is-mans-fault-un-panel-concludes/

“The atmosphere and ocean have warmed, the amounts of snow and ice have diminished, and sea level has risen,” the report said, adding that this has caused extreme weather all over the world. “It is very likely that heat waves will occur more often and last longer, and that extreme precipitation events will become more intense and frequent in many regions.” The risks that these extreme weather conditions present affect a wide range of people but are most devastating to disadvantaged populations, the report said.

The report recommends allocating finances to encourage people and governments to come up with new ideas to tackle climate change.  http://www.nbcnews.com/science/environment/climate-change-dangers-are-higher-ever-u-n-report-n239401

I reviewed the 116 page report from the United Nations.  Here are a some statements from the report:

Over the last two decades, the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets have been losing mass (high confidence) . G laciers have continued to shrink almost worldwide (high confidence). Northern Hemisphere spring snow cover has continued to decrease in extent ( high confidence ). There is high confidence that there are strong regional differences in the trend in Antarctic sea ice extent , with a very likely increase in total extent. …

Human influence on the climate system is clear, and recent anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases are the highest in history. Recent climate changes have had widespread impacts on human and natural systems …

Each of the last three decades has been successively warmer at the Earth’s surface than any preceding decade since 1850. The period from 1983 to 2012 was very likely the warmest 30 – year period of the last 800 years in the Northern Hemisphere, where such assessment is possible ( high confidence ) and likely the warmest 30 -year period of the last 1400 years ( medium confidence ). …

Over the period 1901 – 2010, global mean sea level rose by 0.19 [0.17 to 0.21] m (Figure 1.1). The rate of sea – level rise since the mid – 19th century has been larger than the mean rate during the previous two millennia ( high confidence ) . . .

Impacts from recent climate – related extremes, such as heat waves, droughts, floods, cyclones, and wildfires, reveal significant vulnerability and exposure of some ecosystems and many human systems to current climate variability ( very high confidence ). Impacts of such climate – related extremes include alteration of ecosystems, disruption of food production and water supply, damage to infrastructure and settlements, human morbidity and mortality, and consequences for mental health and human well -being. For countries at all levels of development, these impacts are consistent with a significant lack of preparedness for current climate variability in some sectors.  (IPCC Fifth Assessment Synthesis Report. CLIMATE CHANGE 2014 SYNTHESIS REPORT Longer report Adopted 1 November 2014)

Here is one of the ‘solutions’ proposed in the above report:

Agriculture Enhance drought and pest resistance; enhance yields. Biotechnology and genetically modified crops

Increased reliance on genetically modified crops greatly increases the risk of massive crop failure and famine.  That is NOT the solution (see also GMOs and Bible Prophecy).  Other solutions such as education, carbon taxes, and political pressures were also mentioned by the UN report.

In a statement last month (see UN leader warns of turbulent times, like the ‘beginning of sorrows’ and then the Great Tribulation), the UN’s Ban Ki-Moon put his hope that humans could solve the problems like those of climate change and food shortages.

However, Jesus taught that the situation would eventually worsen, God would insure the solution (the gospel of the kingdom) would be proclaimed to the world as a witness, and then things would get so bad that God has to intervene to stop the world from being destroyed:

8 And there will be earthquakes in various places, and there will be famines and troubles. These are the beginnings of sorrows.
(Mark 13:8)

14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come.

15 “Therefore when you see the ‘abomination of desolation,’ spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place” (whoever reads, let him understand), 16 “then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. 17 Let him who is on the housetop not go down to take anything out of his house. 18 And let him who is in the field not go back to get his clothes. 19 But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days! 20 And pray that your flight may not be in winter or on the Sabbath. 21 For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be. 22 And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved; but for the elect’s sake those days will be shortened. (Matthew 24:14-22)

The United Nations was never God’s hope for humanity, the Kingdom of God was. At that remains the true hope for this world.

Do humans have any impact on the climate?

Yes.  The Bible repeatedly warns, especially in the Hebrew scriptures, that various sins will result in negative climate change (see Weather Blessings and Sorrows).  Other than alluding to possible sins related to financial greed, did the United Nations call for repentance?

No.

Did the United Nations report mention the growing acceptance of the homosexual agenda as being related to climate change?

No.

Do all scientists believe that a massive elimination of all fossil fuels will resolve problems associated with climate change?

No.

Did the United Nations report quote biblical prophecy?

No.

We are having problems which were expected by those that understand biblical prophecy.

The Bible says that we will have a horrible period of high heat in the future, and eventually no islands:

15 “But it shall come to pass, if you do not obey the voice of the Lord your God, to observe carefully all His commandments and His statutes which I command you today, that all these curses will come upon you and overtake you: 16 “Cursed shall you be in the city, and cursed shall you be in the country. 17 “Cursed shall be your basket and your kneading bowl. 18 “Cursed shall be the fruit of your body and the produce of your land, the increase of your cattle and the offspring of your flocks. 19 “Cursed shall you be when you come in, and cursed shall you be when you go out. 20 “The Lord will send on you cursing, confusion, and rebuke in all that you set your hand to do, until you are destroyed and until you perish quickly, because of the wickedness of your doings in which you have forsaken Me. 21 The Lord will make the plague cling to you until He has consumed you from the land which you are going to possess. 22 The Lord will strike you with consumption, with fever, with inflammation, with severe burning fever, with the sword, with scorching, and with mildew; they shall pursue you until you perish. 23 And your heavens which are over your head shall be bronze, and the earth which is under you shall be iron. 24 The Lord will change the rain of your land to powder and dust; from the heaven it shall come down on you until you are destroyed. (Deuteronomy 28:15-24)

8 Then the fourth angel poured out his bowl on the sun, and power was given to him to scorch men with fire. 9 And men were scorched with great heat, and they blasphemed the name of God who has power over these plagues; and they did not repent and give Him glory. (Revelation 16:8-9)

18 And there were noises and thunderings and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such a mighty and great earthquake as had not occurred since men were on the earth. 19 Now the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell. And great Babylon was remembered before God, to give her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of His wrath. 20 Then every island fled away, and the mountains were not found. (Revelation 16:18-20)

Back in 2009, in a book, I mentioned the following was about to happen:

Considering all of the natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods, food shortages, and economic problems in the past few years, perhaps this would be a good time to explain that the Bible shows that these problems were expected to occur prior to the great tribulation. Those outside the Bible have sometimes referred to a time such as this as a time of transition or chaos. …

There will be a generation that will experience end-time events, beginning with “sorrows,” including the Great Tribulation, heavenly signs, and finally the return of Jesus Christ (Matthew 24:5-34). …

Mark recorded the same account of this time from his perspective:

3 Now as He sat on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked Him privately, 4 “Tell us, when will these things be? And what will be the sign when all these things will be fulfilled?” 5 And Jesus, answering them, began to say: “Take heed that no one deceives you. 6 For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am He,’ and will deceive many. 7 But when you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be troubled; for such things must happen, but the end is not yet. 8 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be earthquakes in various places, and there will be famines and troubles. These are the beginnings of sorrows. 9 But watch out for yourselves, for they will deliver you up to councils, and you will be beaten in the synagogues. You will be brought before rulers and kings for My sake, for a testimony to them. 10 And the gospel must first be preached to all the nations. 11 But when they arrest you and deliver you up, do not worry beforehand, or premeditate what you will speak. But whatever is given you in that hour, speak that; for it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit…” (Mark 13:3–11).

Thus, in both Matthew and Mark it is clear that a time called “the beginning of sorrows” precedes the Great Tribulation.

Notice that in Mark’s account he uses the term troubles. Troubles would seem to include economic and political problems, in addition to those specifically mentioned, such as wars, famines, natural disasters, and pestilences. …

Odd weather patterns result in food shortages and natural disasters. Matthew 24:7
The world is actually in a berserk transition, as the real age of peace is not yet here.  It may be a period of chaos.  It is the beginning of sorrows. Matthew 24:8

(Thiel B. 2012 and the Rise of the Secret Sect.  Nazarene Books, 2009)

The above was published because it was consistent with Bible prophecy.  We have been seeing odd weather patterns and the United Nations is concerned about related food shortages.

The problems that the world is now facing should be a wake-up call to repent. The warnings from the Bible are going out, but many prefer to put their trust in humankind and not God to solve the problems.
