“More To Come” – Trader Warns VIX Seasonality Suggests “It’s Not Over Yet”

USA Today reported that the global stock market is down:

Stocks on Wall Street opened lower Monday after global equities tumbled and market angst and volatility ticked higher, continuing a stock market selloff sparked by fears that the U.S. central bank could hike interest rates at its meeting next month.

After the opening bell on Wall Street the Dow Jones industrial average was off 60 points, or 0.3%, but off their lows of the morning when the the blue chip stock gauge was down more than 100 points in pre-market trading. The broad Standard & Poor’s 500 index was 0.2% lower and the technology-packed Nasdaq composite was off 0.2%.

The early losses on Wall Street followed big stock market declines in Europe and Asia, where worries about less central bank support for markets prompted investors to sell. The broad Stoxx Europe 600 stock index was down 1.5%. In Asia, Japan’s Nikkei 225 index lost 1.7% and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index closed 3.4% lower.

After a quiet summer on Wall Street, where there were no sharp swings in stock prices, volatility picked up Friday when the S&P 500 tumbled nearly 2.5% — ending a period of calm in which the large-company stock index went 52 trading days without a drop of 1% or more, according to S&P Dow Jones Indices. The Dow also took a hit Friday, tumbling nearly 400 points, which was its worst one-day point loss since late June in the first trading day after Britain shocked markets by voting to exit the European Union.

Of course, stocks go up as well as down. But as the USA Today report hinted at, the market has been affected by manipulations by the US Federal Reserve.

The currency manipulations that the USA has been doing, while increasing its real debt, will not end well:

Treasury bills and notes are a type of ‘pledge.’ Financial manipulation and debt will not end well.

It was just a matter of time, noted one veteran trader, as VIX smashed higher out of its comfort zone on Friday. This is not completely unexpected as seasonally VIX has bled lower into July then risen notably into November. This year that lines up perfectly withe election uncertainty and as the trader warned, “there’s more to come…”

Even though the long run average of the VIX is 20 (19.74013, to be exact), there are long periods of time when it can trade consistently below 15 on an average annual basis. That’s not quite one standard deviation (that is 8, or 7.9867 if you want to be precise), but far enough away from the long run mean to be noticeable. …

The above article also had a chart that indicated that the US election in November will affect volatility, but did not comment about whether Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton would be the more volatile choice. Anyway, the VIX is a measurement of volatility. As I wrote late last year, it was likely we would have financial volatility in 2016 (see M&M: Expect financial volatility in 2016). And again we are seeing it.

Jesus warned that in the end times, people would essentially act like everything was fine:

26 And as it was in the days of Noah, so it will be also in the days of the Son of Man: 27 They ate, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all. 28 Likewise as it was also in the days of Lot: They ate, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they built; 29 but on the day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all. 30 Even so will it be in the day when the Son of Man is revealed. (Luke 17:26-30)

The world was destroyed by a massive flood during the days of Noah, whereas Sodom was destroyed by fire. The Apostle Peter warned that many would scoff at prophecies in the last days to their peril (2 Peter 3:1-14).

Jesus, it should be noted, also warned Christians who thought they did not need to change their lives (Revelation 3:14-19).

The recent stock market concerns are NOT yet the end, but are consistent with ‘troubles’ (Mark 13:8) which are expected before the end (Mark 13:14-20).
