John Bolton Accuses Iran of Tanker Attacks Off UAE and issues threat

The US appears to be setting the stage for a possible attack against Iran:

U.S. National Security Adviser John Bolton said Wednesday that Iran was “almost certainly” responsible for attacks earlier this month on oil tankers off the coast of the United Arab Emirates.

Speaking to reporters during a visit to the Abu Dhabi for what he called talks on “important and timely regional security matters,” Bolton did not give any evidence to back up his accusation, but said the tankers were hit by naval mines.

Iran previously denied responsibility for the attacks, and on Wednesday foreign ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi rejected Bolton’s accusation as “ridiculous,” but not a surprise since Bolton is a long-time critic of Iran.

Tensions between Iran and the United States have escalated in recent weeks since President Donald Trump announced his decision to try to totally eliminate Iran’s oil exports to pressure the Iranian government to alter its aggression in the Middle East, and his move to add 1,500 troops in the Persian Gulf region in response to what he said were Iranian threats.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has accused Bolton and others of engaging in “warmongering” and said the Trump administration with its re-imposition of sanctions against Iran is conducting “economic terrorism.”

Even so, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani told a Cabinet meeting that the “road is not closed” to negotiations with the U.S. if it returns to the 2015 international nuclear deal that Trump abrogated. ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — President Donald Trump’s national security adviser warned Iran on Wednesday that any attacks in the Persian Gulf will draw a “very strong response” from the U.S., taking a hard-line approach with Tehran after his boss only two days earlier said America wasn’t “looking to hurt Iran at all.”

Iran has made many threats in the past towards both Israel and the USA. A “very strong response” is a public threat suggesting the USA may attack Iran. Donald Trump made a threat against Iran earlier this month (see also Donald Trump warns Iran, drones hit Saudi oil sites: 120k troops?).

While Iran could be devastated by a war with the USA or Israel (cf. Jeremiah 49:34-38), it is not that the USA (or Israel) could not be damaged. Iran did recently threaten Israel, and the Bible indicates that it will one day cause great damage to Jerusalem (Isaiah 22:1-14).

Now, Iran has a lot of nuclear materials and could at least now produce what is called a ‘dirty bomb.” A “dirty bomb” is one where radioactive materials are placed inside a conventional bomb. The resultant explosion would contaminate an area and make it radioactively dangerous. Many also believe that Iran is close to producing not just the possibility of dirty bombs, but actual nuclear bombs. Iran having drone stealth technology puts the USA, Israel, and others at risk of being attacked with nuclear explosions. This could very well happen.

Furthermore, another way that Iran could inflict major damage to the USA would be an effective use of electromagnetic pulse (EMP) weapons. Iran is believed to have that capability.

An EMP attack by Iran, in the proper locations, could greatly affect Israel, the USA, or even Europe. Iran test-fired a missile last Summer that was believed to be capable of delivering an emp bomb. Thus, Iran probably is considering multiple ways of employing them.

Power transformers in the USA (and elsewhere) are at risk from emp bombs and this could cause major economic and other damage to the USA. Such emp weapons, however, have never been used large scale, so precisely what would happen is subject to debate. But the reality is that emp weapons, as well as solar flares which have similar potential, are threats to the USA, its defenses, and its economy.

The USA, despite its military strength, is vulnerable to being hurt by EMP weapons as well as nuclear weapons, chemical weapons, dirty bombs, terrorism, and biological weapons that Iran and/or its ally Syria possess. It has been shown in a test that EMPs can basically work as advertised, and this may give the Iranians more reason to look further into using them if they feel pressed.

As far as Iran itself goes, while it wants to lead all of Islam, it will not succeed in that objective — the Bible points to an Arabic power doing that in Daniel 11:40-43. Because of that, I have long felt that it may be that Iran would be ‘neutralized’ before the final King of the South (Daniel 11:40) rises up.

Iran could be neutralized by internal unrest or other matters. On the other hand, if it employs, or attempts to employ, certain weapons of mass destruction, it may well cause Israel, the USA, and/or others to turn on it and destroy aspects of its military capability.

“Neutralizing” Iran would allow most of the other Islamic states (like Saudi Arabia and Egypt) to continue to exist (Syria might not do well per Isaiah 17:1) and allow for the rising up of the prophesied King of the South .

The top leadership of Iran has a Shi’ite Muslim agenda, which they have concluded includes causing chaos and war.

I, for one, do not believe that Iran’s leaders have given up on their goals of Islamic domination–and they do want weapons of mass destruction. But if they significantly act militarily with them (cf. Isaiah 22:1-14), it ultimately will not turn our well for Iran (e.g. Jeremiah 49:34-38).

Iran has been involved in a stubborn and patient effort to turn Syria into a base of operations. But it has run into a brick wall, in the form of an even more determined Israeli effort to disrupt this threatening process.

Hundreds of Israeli airstrikes in the past few years alone have put a major dent in Iran’s plans, destroying missile bases, weapons production sites, military bases and weapons’ transfer stations. This mission to prevent Iran from taking over Syria has become a top objective for the Israeli Air Force. The campaign, known as the “War Between Wars,” is ongoing, and requires 24/7 intelligence gathering, precision strikes and calculated risks.

But the latest satellite imagery suggests that Iran’s leadership is far from giving up. Iran has two central objectives in Syria: to turn the country into an Iranian-controlled war machine against Israel and use it to traffic weapons to Hezbollah in neighboring Lebanon.

Despite being under major economic pressure from the U.S. and contending with bruising Israeli strikes on its assets in Syria, the Iranians are not walking away. They are merely tweaking the “volume” of their activities, turning the dial up and down in line with conditions, but never switching their Syria project off.

Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and the IRGC remain committed to building capabilities in Syria so that they can fire missiles and rockets at Israel, create terrorist cells and send armed formations to the Syrian-Israeli border. Israel is prophesied to be damaged from a power that sounds like Iran and Syria:

But you did not look to its Maker, Nor did you have respect for Him who fashioned it long ago.

12 And in that day the Lord God of hosts Called for weeping and for mourning,For baldness and for girding with sackcloth. 13 But instead, joy and gladness, Slaying oxen and killing sheep, Eating meat and drinking wine: “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die!”

14 Then it was revealed in my hearing by the Lord of hosts,”Surely for this iniquity there will be no atonement for you, Even to your death,” says the Lord God of hosts. (Isaiah 22:5-14)

After such damage to Jerusalem, we could see the ‘peace deal’ of Daniel 9:27 (see also The ‘Peace Deal’ of Daniel 9:27).

Israel, and yes even the US, may be damaged before such a deal takes place.
