President Assad’s troops are causing  massive amounts of Syrians to flee:

30 July 2012

(AP) The U.N. said 200,000 Syrians have fled the embattled city of Aleppo since intense clashes between regime forces and rebels began 10 days ago.The government forces turned mortars, tank and helicopter gunships against rebel positions Monday, pressing ahead with a counter-offensive to wrest back control of neighborhoods taken by rebels in Syria’s largest city and commercial hub…

U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said late Sunday that the use of heavy weapons, particularly helicopters, is just another nail in President Bashar Assad’s coffin.  http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5g96mbWjFgBWKsxMJ69YH4Qo63m6g?docId=eceb0cc3cb2a4e8fa9d72eea844bd55c

Having 200,000 people flee is a big deal.  My prayers go out for them and others in Syria.

As far as the current escalation of fighting being “another nail in President Bashar Assad’s coffin,” it is likely that President Assad realizes that having 200,000 flee hurts his credibility as his regime has insisted that it is mainly foreigners that have been stirring up the dissent in Syria.

Syria is technically still at war with Israel and has stated that it may attack it (although Israel may attack first, see Israel Declares Another “Red Line” That Would Cause it to Take Military Action Against Syria and Syria’s Chemical Weapons, Israel’s Threat, & Iran).  Syria long has had chemical and biological weapons that it may use, and Israel and the USA are concerned about them.

Partially because of the internal civil war, Syria’s President may decide that attacking Israel, probably in conjunction with support from Iran, is his best option. It will not be, though he may do that. The Bible suggests that Syria will support the coming final King of the South (Daniel 11:40-43; Ezekiel 30:1-8) and a change in or from the Assad regime will be necessary for this to happen–and it will come to pass.  The Bible also teaches that Damascus will be destroyed (Isaiah 17:1).

But a war involving Israel and/or the USA will not mean that Israel and the USA will necessarily come out without damage.

“And what I say to you, I say to all: Watch!” (Mark 13:37).
