The EU is Mexico’s third-largest trading partner, lagging far behind the United States and China.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has stressed the importance of “opening other horizons” at a time when both Mexico and the European Union are grappling with US President Donald Trump’s tariff offensive. …
It facilitates trade in auto parts, a sector particularly affected by Trump’s tariffs.
“Mexico wants to reduce its dependence on its northern neighbor, but also on Asian, or rather, Chinese, supply chains, and in Europe we are pursuing the same objectives,” an EU official told AFP on condition of anonymity.
On a visit Thursday to Mexico City, the EU’s foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, said the deal would create new opportunities for “both economies to compete globally” and build on the momentum of the past decade, which has seen a 75-percent leap in EU-Mexican trade. …
The lower tariffs enjoyed by Mexico will benefit the European Union, according to Sergio Contreras, president of the Mexican Business Council for Foreign Trade.

MEXICO CITY, May 22 (Reuters) – Mexico and the European Union … seek to decrease dependence on the U.S. and partially insulate themselves from U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs.
The accord, which they reached broad agreement on in 2025 but have delayed signing, expands a Mexico-EU trade accord from 2000, which covered only industrial goods. The new pact adds services, government procurement, digital trade, investment and farm produce.
Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa are to sign the deal in Mexico City in their first summit in over a decade.
“This summit means more than trade; it’s a geopolitical statement,” Kaja Kallas, the EU’s foreign policy chief, said on Thursday in Mexico City ahead of the signing.
Both sides want to diversify their exports away from the U.S.
The EU was hit with sweeping new duties in Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariffs in April 2025 and prepared countermeasures, though these were paused as both sides sought talks. While tensions eased somewhat with a tariff truce and a July deal, U.S. tariffs on EU exports remain elevated.
Mexico has also been hit with stiff U.S. tariffs on automotive, steel and aluminum exports, and trade relations between the two countries have been volatile throughout Trump’s second term.
Mexico’s economy ministry estimates the new agreement could increase Mexican exports to the EU from around $24 billion a year to $36 billion by 2030. Tariffs, sanctions, economic threats, and policies from the Trump Administration are pushing nations away from trading with the USA and towards trading more with each other.
There is an expression that “the enemy of your enemy is your friend.” The USA is turning friends into enemies, and that is consistent with biblical prophecies (e.g. Lamentations 1:1-2). Expect the European Union and Mexico to trade more with each other.

Historically, Donald Trump has called for “fair trade” and indicated that various nations, including several in Asia, are not engaged in fair trade, so he has proposed high tariffs.[i]
Donald Trump has called tariffs, “the most beautiful word in the dictionary” and even proposed massive tariffs (up to 2000%) on Mexico if it will not do what he wants.[ii] He has basically also proposed a minimum of 10% tariffs on goods from much of the rest of the world.
Some believe that Donald Trump’s positions on trade will lead to a global trade war.[iii] Europe has said it will hit back against Donald Trump’s tariff policies.[iv] …
One of the unintended consequences of Donald Trump’s threats of tariffs and other trade matters is that it is motivating nations he has threatened to look to trade more with each other.
The morning after his reelection, I wrote:
According to the major media, Donald Trump won re-election. … Europe will get more serious about trade deals with others internationally, such as being more motivated to approve the trade deal with the Mercosur block of South America.[v] …
Unintended Consequences
While Donald Trump seems to believe that his policies are best for the United States, notice some unintended consequences of them: …
- Pushing tariffs and sanctions on other countries is contributing to the rise of the final time of the Gentiles (Luke 21:24; Ezekiel 7:24).
- Pushing tariffs and other policies that foreign nations do not like is contributing to other nations looking to bypass the USA dollar, as well as trade more with each other and less with the USA. This will further push various globalist’s moves forward without the USA. This is also helping set the stage for the coming European Babylonian Beast to dominate international trade. …

Since the above was published, the EU and Mercosur signed and began to implement that agreement (see Mercosur Agreement Goes Into Effect). And now Mexico and the European Union have finalized a trade agreement that they had delayed for many years.
Statements and policies by the Trump Administration have strained relations between the USA and its allies. There have been, and will be, many unintended consequences of the Donald Trump presidency (cf. Lamentations 1:1-2).

Donald Trump’s tariffs, threats, etc. are a major concern for Europe and its trade.
In 2018, I wrote:
The Europeans have been working with Latin America, China, Russia’s Eurasian Union, and other areas of the world to try to set up its dominance of world trade as well as standards for world trade. (19 items to prophetically watch in 2019)
Such deals have been happening. But expect more concrete action, at least partially because of the reelection of Donald Trump, along with J.D. Vance.
Europe will reach out to various ones in Asia and Africa, as well as Latin America. In the next several years, deals and more trade will occur with Africa, Asia, Mexico, and South America.
Yes, the above is occurring. World events continue to align with properly explained biblical prophecies.

US President Trump imposed tariffs on a global scale. Those tariffs were imposed on friend and foe alike. It seems as if President Trump is no respecter of nations. But how will this work out for the United States? Will these tariffs result in other nations drawing closer together that have had rather cold, and even not so cold, relations in the past? Will global tariffs result in trade wars? Were the events which are happening predicted by any in the Continuing Church of God? Is Europe drawing closer to China? Is Europe drawing closer to Latin and South America? With the exception of a few of America’s allies, is the net result of these tariffs a worldwide scramble to create new alliances and new trading partners to the exclusion of the United States? What will be the future result of these new alliances? Many of the nations that are now seeking new alliances were just recently America’s allies. They were her friends. Dr. Thiel brings to light the fate of America and her allies at the hands of her former friends, as revealed in the book of Lamentations.
