I made a post back in 2009, about Canada considering closer ties to the European Union in order to be less reliant on the USA (see Canada Looking to the EU).
In the past year and a half, Canada’s Prime Minister has taken several steps to become closer to Europe:
Canada seeks ‘unique alliance’ with EU, Carney says

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Sunday said he was pursuing unprecedented closeness with the European Union to reduce its dependence on its economically hostile neighbor, but not a membership with the bloc.
“We’re not looking to become a member of the European Union,” Carney told reporters at the Toronto International Film Festival.
“What we are looking — and will begin discussions for — is a unique alliance between Canada and the European Union,” he said. “We share the same values, we have the same priorities and we have very complementary strengths.”
Carney’s clarification came after a report by the Wall Street Journal claimed he was exploring whether Canada could become an “associate member” of the bloc. The newspaper reported that the EU was open to the idea of granting Canada associate membership — a status it would have to create for the North American nation. …
The remarks precede the Canadian prime minister’s scheduled trip to France this week.
In Strasbourg, France, Carney will become the first head of government to attend the “State of the European Union” address before delivering his own speech at the European Parliament.
His visit is a “tremendous symbol,” said Tobias Cremer, a European lawmaker from Germany and the main sponsor of a March resolution calling for stronger EU-Canada cooperation.
“Canada has many of the resources that Europe is very much short of, whether it’s in terms of energy, whether it’s rare earths (and) raw minerals,” Cremer said.

Carney’s European pivot comes after months of increasingly hostile trade relations with Washington. In August, U.S. President Donald Trump imposed 50 percent tariffs on a range of Canadian goods, including cars, alcohol and dairy. That prompted Ottawa to retaliate and eventually suspend trade talks between the two countries, after what Carney called “unfair” last-minute U.S. demands.
Trump has also repeatedly needled Ottawa over Canadian sovereignty — from calling the country a potential 51st state to ordering Lake Ontario to be renamed “Lake America” for U.S. federal use.

Since becoming Prime Minister, Mark Carney has pushed Canada towards closer relationships with the European Union as well as the UK. A major part of the motivation for this has been statements and policies of Donald Trump and his Administration.

Canada is in a precarious position these days and Donald Trump seems willing to try to cause Canada a lot of economic pain to get it to accede to his demands. Canada’s economy is highly dependent upon the USA’s economy, not the other way around.
That said, one of the unintended consequences of Donald Trump’s statements and policies has been to get allies to question purchasing weaponry from the United States.

There have been many unintended consequences of the Trump-Vance Administration. Offending many nations, including Canada, has happened. And there will be more.
And while the Trump-Vance Administration seems to believe that any damage to the USA will be minimal, in the long run this will not turn out well for the USA.

Finnish President Alexander Stubb expressed the opinion that the European Union should significantly expand and eventually unite about 40 states. In his view, this will help the EU strengthen its position on the international stage and become a more influential force in the world, writes CNBC.
Speaking at the Eurelectric Power Summit in Helsinki, Stubb named countries that could potentially join the European Union or establish particularly close relations with it. Among them are the United Kingdom, Canada, Turkey, Norway, and Iceland.
According to the Finnish leader, there is now a favorable moment for EU expansion, as the war in Ukraine and changes in US policy are prompting many countries to re-evaluate the benefits of cooperation with the European Union.
He separately noted that the United Kingdom, which left the EU in 2020, should be brought as close as possible to the European community again. Speaking about Canada, Stubb jokingly remarked that it would be better for it to become the 28th member of the European Union than to join the United States as its 51st state, alluding to recent statements by US President Donald Trump.
The Finnish President also called not to forget about Turkey, which has long been a candidate for EU membership. In his opinion, this country is of great importance for Europe’s security. Furthermore, he emphasized the importance of further integration of the Western Balkan countries.

Europe will become a massive superstate. And yes, parts of Canada may be connected to it.
