Thursday night’s debate was one of the last chances Republican President Donald Trump and his Democratic rival, former Vice President Joe Biden, had to appeal to a large nationwide audience. Both men seemed to be aware of how much was at stake.
Trump acted significantly more presidential than he had in recent memory, staying calm and using familiar arguments to attack Biden’s record when it was his, Trump’s, turn to speak — more on that in a bit. And Biden, who Trump and his supporters refer to as Sleepy Joe, was very much awake, passionately arguing against the incumbent’s policies in areas like immigration and the handling of the coronavirus crisis. …
The family separation policy, which the Trump administration stopped eventually, was criticized as unconscionable.
But the immigration segment of the debate took a turn after a strong start for Biden. Trump, avoiding the issue of the children still missing their parents, pointed out that some of the detention facilities, often described as cages, were in fact built during the Obama administration, when Biden was vice president. “That was him. They built cages,” said Trump.
For Coleman, he said, “It would have been better if Biden had had a response.” …

In the end, the president came out looking somewhat stronger than his challenger.
“Trump won, in the sense that [his debate performance] wasn’t a debacle, said Coleman, who is also the associate editor of Sabato’s Crystal Ball, a non-partisan election campaign newsletter. “We have set the bar so low. Now is it going to change a lot of minds? I don’t know.”

Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden, during Thursday’s debate with President Donald Trump, .. raised the issue that Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani was being used as an “agent” of Russia to spread disinformation.
That, of course, was the opening for which the president was waiting, to ask Biden about the millions of dollars his family was getting from Russia, from China, and more. And what about the money that was being held for the “big guy,” identified as Joe Biden?
The issue has erupted into what some analysts have described as the biggest scandal ever in American politics, as emails and other documentation that have become available – from insiders, from an abandoned computer, and more – have described how the Biden family was making multiple deals with foreign interests that would benefit the family with millions of dollars.
“I think you owe an explanation to the American people,” the president charged. “Maybe you can do it now.”
Biden then claimed, “I have not taken a penny from any foreign source in my life. I have not taken a single penny from any country whatsoever ever.”
Trump described the Biden family as a “vacuum cleaner,” sucking up money from everyone.
Biden also denied there was anything wrong with his son, Hunter, getting paid tens of thousands of dollars a month from Burisma, a Ukrainian gas company, an industry in which Hunter had no experience.

Anyway, caught parts of the debate last night, as well as listened to analysts at CNN, Fox, and MSNBC. The analysts essentially said that Joe Biden hurt himself in the states of Pennsylvania and Texas (two states Donald Trump probably must win if he is to win the election), Donald Trump scored points on the Hunter Biden scandal, and that although Donald Trump did better at the debate than Joe Biden, he probably would not win the election.
We will see.

If the Biden-Harris ticket wins, that looks to be the case. While Donald Trump spent the five days prior to last night’s debate campaigning and being US President, Joe Biden spent most of his time prepping for the debate. Despite the prepping, he did not do as well according to most analysts. And if he wins, it looks like he will be more of a figurehead president than the actual one. Which points to Kamala Harris being the de facto President of the United States, consistent with her husband’s statement.
How many voters will be motivated by the debate is questionable.
The lessor of two evils is still evil.
